Backstory:
Malen, the unfortunate son of a human mother, was born in a small farming village outside of Kalsgard. His strength made the other farmhands tolerate him, often doing their best to work with him so that his hard work would reflect well on them, but they never really felt comfortable around him, and he could tell. Every paycheck he collected, he immediately went into town and bought new books. He bought books on history, religion, nature and biology, and on other places all around the continent. Over time, his favorite books became those which told stories of other places on Golarion, places that he would one day travel when he turned eighteen and could leave the farm.
As his eighteenth birthday approached, he went into town and immediately came to a signpost where he saw a notice for a caravan soon leaving Kalsgard for Sandpoint. He walked all across town until he eventually found the tavern where the traders stayed. When he found them in the common room, he was surprised to be immediately rejected by the caravan leader. Malen, in his shock, broke into tears. Seeing the situation, another trader intervened, noting Malen's wiry muscle and lean frame, and asked on his behalf that the young half-orc be taken on as a guard. All hesitancy was dispatched when Malen's skills with a whip, a common tool on the farm, became obvious to the caravan. He became a valuable guard, and in addition to protecting the caravan from bandits, he soon found his pay raised in exchange for taking care of the animals as well. Before he knew it, he had arrived in Sandpoint, and left the caravan to explore the town on his own.
