"I wouldn't mind preparing some more appropriate magics to our current situation. I was less than useless against that creature." Magnus concurs with the group. " Let's just patrol the immediate area briefly before we settle in for a rest." Magnus quickly descends to the shore with Tuboo perched on his shoulder.
Magnus is unsure how best to help. He decides to head down below to provide an extra pair of hands on the bilge pumps.
Magnus gathers his senses. "What now?" He says, looking around at the decimated crew and the pulverized ship.
Once over the ship, Magnus asks to be dropped down, then he hands Jon Tuboo. "You two scout ahead. Tuboo will let me know when you have found a safe harbour and I will relay the message to the captain. I don't think that we're much threat against the beast, so we can at least be a boon to the captain."
I am still here.
Magnus sees his allies rising up to combat the beast, despite it's clear size. "You're all crazier than me." He says, before casting levitate on himself and lifting up to face the creature head-on.
Magnus sighs and sends his illusory crew jumping over the far side of the boat, and clinging to the sides to draw its attention to easy prey.
"This may be a stupid question, Captain, but what exactly does this creature hunger for?" Magnus asks, all the while maintaining his illusory crew in case of a second breath attack.
Magnus maintains focus on his illusion as he draws out his crossbow and begins to load it. "Stilgar!" Magnus shouts "Help the burned crew. Use one of your fancy healing bursts. "
Magnus creates an illusory crew running about the ship to distract the creature.
Magnus gasps at the sight of the monstrosity before him. "Baal's breath!" he exclaims.
Magnus smacks his forehead as Captaine Wilde explains what he has done. "Of course, a boon for ourselves. Here I was so focused on deterring the pirates, I didn't think of bolstering our own ship." Magnus goes back to his spellbook and fingers through some pages, planning what to do the next day.
Magnus goes up to Mr. Thorne and states simply and confidently. "Sir, I do magic. Ask and I shall deliver to the best of my ability. I am truly out of my element here though. Most magic has a range and size limit that makes a boat race outside of my scope."
"The point is that you won't need to. I will provide some illusory gains to fill the barrels. We will dump out the air into the sea and hopefully that will make the pirates less interested in pursuing us."
Magnus considers the situation and pulls at his coat as the Wind chills him. "I can't come up with anything that can turn them back from this distance, but if they're close enough to see my illusions in detail, we may be able to deter them. Bring up some barrels and line them up next to the edge of the boat. Put on a show of how heavy they are too."
Magnus examines the situation and his eyes flit about the sea and ship as he searches for the solution. Finally, he jumps with excitement and approaches the captain. "I believe I have a solution to your pirate problem. I need an axe. Auric, you'll want to take off your armor for this." Magnus explains that he will give Auric the ability to swim using his own magic. Auric will then be responsible for chopping off the rudder of the approaching ships. Unable to steer, they will inevitably veer off course and need to stop for repairs. We will be able to escape in the meantime.
After the first few days, Magnus will take to Tuboo's body in the early morning and go into the captains quarters, looking for any incriminating documents, etc.
Magnus will make a point of showing off Tuboo to the crew, lest they think that he is a rat on board. He will speak to the captain in particular. "Tuboo likes to roam about, and you'll sometimes catch him sleeping in the oddest places. I wouldn't recommend moving him though. He gets quite vicious. Just come and get me."
Magnus speaks up at this point. "That would certainly change your power in the bargain, once we're on the ship, we've already agreed. If you ask a price too high, then what? Let's negotiate here."
Magnus gapes in awe at the coordination of the crew as they work. "Marvelous" he comments to no one in particular.
Magnus spends the morning working on crafting a new scroll of locate object.
Magnus has already been awake for a time, preparing his spells and re-organizing his pack. He sticks his head out of his room to see what is going on.
Magnus can be heard snoring and mumbling in his sleep throughout the inn. "Monkey, go fetch my hatchet. There's a trufula tree to cut down!"
Magnus puts down 5 gold for two rooms to allow for a respectful separation for our female and male members. He also asks for the morning meal to be covered as well.
Magnus smiles back at Oglan before turning to go into the inn. Magnus pays for all of his comrades, including the stabling of their animals. Once that's all done, Magnus promptly retires to his room and snoring can be heard moments later throughout the inn.
Magnus' tired eyes gaze upward hopefully at the clever sign. "How cute." He then turns to one of the leading soldiers. "Being as you live so differently, isolated from other markets, I wonder how we may pay you for the night and accommodation."
"You're right, Auric. I'm glad that you were able to talk them down, and I am definitely going to enjoy this well-earned rest, but let's not let our guard down entirely." Magnus says as they cross the bridge into the town. "Let's rest up now and explore the city tomorrow."
Magnus speaks to Stilgar. "We're not really looking for much more than a safe place to sleep at the moment. Let's secure that before we ask for help with our more lofty goals."
"Fardusk?" Magnus queries. "I had forgotten about that place. You're right though, a ship like that could sail anywhere, I'm sure."
Magnus allows his eyes to glaze over as he looks to the billowing smoke. If everything checks out, Magnus will nod in satisfaction to his comrades. "Krawg, you have done good work today, and we shall repay you by sparing your life, but take this message back to your people: My group shall not be attacked again. If we are, I will find you, and I will hold you personally responsible. Now, be gone!" With that, Magnus turns his back to the Giant and waits for him to return the other direction, before finally returning to his usual demeanor. He turns to his comrades. "Well? Am I amazing, or am I amazing?" He grins.
Magnus listens in to the conversation as he continues marching. He does not comment as he normally does. When the Ogre beckons to them, Magnus nods calmly and waves his hand for the giant to continue.
Magnus takes in the image and tries to memorize the scene for future retelling. He looks to the rest of the group. "We're all a bit tired, I know, but let's keep going."
Magnus whispers back to Kalaya. "I think it's safe to assume that if the Giant is describing a big pointy tree fence, that it's a small enough village to be enclosed within walls, but large enough population to keep a constant guard."
Magnus makes no more indication about the Giant's inner thoughts, but he does give Auric an unusual look. Magnus speaks more briskly now, impatient. "Very well then, You shall lead us to the town and we shall allow you to stay alive. We leave immediately." Magnus gestures for the Giant to begin leading and for his comrades to begin gathering the camp.
Magnus maintains his booming voice. "Very well then, you shall lead us to the town and we shall decide if you live. If you follow my instructions, I may even let you keep that deer haunch you like so much." At this point, Magnus gestures to his friends. "Stay your weapons, the giant will not be killed... yet."
Magnus casts share languages, minor image, and detect thoughts to draw the Ogre into his trap. He creates an illusion of a fiery battleground with ogre corpses scattered about. He stands up to the ogre as it awakes and sees his illusion.
GM: The ogre should understand this and respond accordingly. If he does, Magnus will command the ogre to tell us where to find civilized people on this side of the pass.
Kalaya::
I think we're waiting on Kalaya to cast any debuffs and then Magnus will do his thing. I'll continue even if Kalaya has no debuffs to offer. GM: Magnus casts his series of spells to control the ogre in either case.
Magnus coughs as Stilgar passes and holds out the limp Tuboo. "He's unconscious from absorbing damage that I would have taken. Do you have one more spell in you for him?
"A giant on a leash, you say? That's a tall order." Magnus says, nearly bursting at the seams with his self-satisfaction at making such a flawless pun. "Alright, I'll need everyone's help with this one."
Magnus casts share language on the giant using his epic spell slots before casting minor image to create the illusion of a firey battlefield with grotesquely burnt and mangled pieces of giants scattered about. Finally, he casts detect thoughts using another epic slot.
Magnus sees the remaining Giants withdraw. He breathes a sigh of relief and returns to the group, carrying Tuboo under one arm and his crossbow in the other. "Well, I think we've got our first taste of how dangerous this place really is. I think we need to improve our sleep security, what about you?
The now invisible Magnus spends the next turn getting as far away from combat as he can without getting too close to another giant. When he is comfortably out of harm's way, he will survey the situation again and load his crossbow.
Magnus steps out of the reach of the giant and lifts his shield cloak as though to defend himself, but instead, he throws the cloak up and in a whirl, he and his equipment are gone.
As Magnus is hit a second time, Tuboo goes limp nearby. Magnus sees bruising on Tuboo where the giants had been hitting Magnus' body.
Magnus attempts to defend himself from harm as he backs away from the giant. he draws up his shield cloak and attempts to make himself as small as possible.
Magnus turns his flaming breath toward the giant that attacked him last, making sure to get him into the next cone.
Magnus' eyelids practically burst open and his enormous pupils quickly dilate and adjust to the light. He surveys the scene and immediately begins casting a spell. His lips begin to meld together and turn bloody red before they begin to glow with heat. Magnus turns to the majority of the Giants and his body convulses violently as a cone of flame is released.
Magnus will take the second last watch, taking a moment to chat briefly with Stilgar before passing off the duty.
Magnus will finish the night by checking the area around the camp, sending senses in different directions and overhead. He will then use his epic magic to cast book ward before going to sleep.
