Chapter Master, Lightning Claws

Yep that's the way I imagined it working.

Alright scouts, harassment duty on the new front labelend 'discord' muhaha

Chapter Master, Lightning Claws

Ah, so much easier to just look it up. Thanks!

Still, Research Station Gilia-4z31 isn't listed under `raw`. I'll need data for
that
Totaling the other planets I have the following production totals:
Food x1
Prometheus negative x5
Ore x0
GG x0
Men x4
Rare Minerals x1
= Looking at the `Total` tab it looks to me that my planets alone would eat up almost the whole surplus(6) of all the prometheum production. Without upkeep or troop movements factored in yet.

Without double checking the numbers `Macro Unit Upkeep` states a total Astartes
upkeep of GGx53 per round
That scale seems a little off. Wrong place again?

Chapter Master, Lightning Claws

Errr, where do I find this resources spreadsheet? I was going by One Note > The Game System > [WiP]Planet Stats & Development
One Note > The Game System > Resources is not a spreadsheet(or lists any planet data) so that doesn't look like what you're talking about either

Chapter Master, Lightning Claws

A clean rule section would indeed help me a lot.

I'm currently trying to figure out what resources my 'holding' worlds generate.
Dastea - Death World - Minima - Delta Tau
Gilia - 4z31 - Research Station - Exactus - Rho (kinda disagree with the 0/0/0 here as this world is supposed to produce the 'secret' chapter only tech)
Hastea - Agri World - Aptus Non - Alpha
Olrabos - Forge World - Exactus - Phi
Reenus - Hive World - Vexilius - Eta

How would I assign the classifications? None of my worlds are technically 'Adeptus Astartes Homeworld's yet they kinda are.
Just pick a classification I think would work for the world?

Chapter Master, Lightning Claws

Round 0 is coming on my end but going slowly.
Despite Choons awesome work with the template round 0 is where everything has to be written(thought) up for a start.

I believe it will be easier(faster) in subsequent rounds because only the delta to the previous rounds will have to be tracked rather than everything thought up from 0

(and the tactics map / onenote can be a little B on mobile/subway internet so I'm even slower until I got the rules down. Sorry about that)

Chapter Master, Lightning Claws

22 vs 55 and better tactical position and still 2/5 wiped? Harsh. Should probably keep scouts away from chaos spaceys even when let by their veteran sergeants
The Lightning Claws lick their wounds and pull pack from large scale disruptions of the enemy front.
Instead they scale down to ambush operations only after fully and successfully reconning the potential ambush opporunity - as they should've been doingin the first place as it is chapter doctrine. But scouts will be scouts so even veteran sergeants can have trouble keeping them in line.
The only other operation for them is to wait until the imperial front arrives at the sites of the previous losses and claim the gene seed of the fallen scouts.

Chapter Master, Lightning Claws

Added the thread to my news feeds now. Post coming when I have the time to write it up xP

Chapter Master, Lightning Claws

The Lightning Claws keep their current strategy of covert ambushes and lightning assaults via thunderhawks. They do not directly engage traitor marines. Rather when encountered they wait for an opportunity to fall into their backs(preferably with sniper fire rather than melee combat) when they engage loyal troops.

They do not meet up with the troops pushing out from the hive and instead stay in cover in the enemy backline, moving back with it and sabotaging supply lines, flanking manouvers and ambushes designed to counter the imperial offensive

Fate: 1d100 ⇒ 22

Chapter Master, Lightning Claws

I like the idea. It would allow the flavor of a space marine chapter master calling from the midst of a battle, a Lord Commander under artillery attack(or plain drinking tee if the war goes to plan) and a Arch Magos who's directing servitors and minor acolytes in an experiment in the background all to come together anoying eachother because the others clearly don't see their respective tactical genius.

It would be a large stretch on the available tech level since the beast novels set mid-m32 state that a non-astropath vox link between ships in the same system had like 30 minutes delay(and I think the general consensus is that tech only regressed since then)
But we have an Arch Magos with a knack for soooomewhat experimental tech. Let him combine some astropath brains with a vox link for funky near-insta 'vox telcos'

Chapter Master, Lightning Claws

Mhhh I agree with the overall feeling that we're too detailed in the test so option 1 seems appropriate.

What I don't see yet is how to make the macro decisions while keeping up the roleplay side of things.
From experience it is simply more interesting to read in-character action - talking, giving orders, doing things. Rather than just saying 'X tells Y to do Z'.
But writing in-character dialog which will set the course of a war for the next 3 month seems hard. Sending of troops in person and holding strategic meetings every 3 month to give out orders does seem doable but foreshadowing your commanders decisions for 3 month to come in character...

This is not meant as an argument against option 1 mind you. I'd just like input on how to write the posts in our 3 month long rounds.

Chapter Master, Lightning Claws

Shadow Captain Lysius watches the strategic hololith as his plan is implemented.

The barest hint of a frown can be detected at the corners of his mouth as the enemy frigatte changes course towards them
"Command word CAPTAINS LOG. Select all pilots and copilots on Thunderhawk duty. EACH append penance, duration 14 days. Append note: 2 days of penance to be purged for every entry of valiant stealth in the coming war. Command word CLOSE."

"Collect and Restock all Thunderhawks. Bring ship to combat speed. As we hit maximum combat speed cycle shadow field to void shields. Plot course: Slingshot manouver with added dive to unleash Thunderhawks. Insertion point: above enemy artillery. Load Bombardment Cannon with ECM. Route bombardment canon target stream and trigger routines to my armor.
Relay orders to sergeants: planetary insertion. Strafe target artillery with gunships while under ECM cover. Do as much damage as possible but do NOT under any circumstance prioritise destruction of enemy above a safe extraction while still under ECM cover. Primary objective is getting down in one piece and undetected. Secondary objective is disturb artillery batteries.
Shipmaster. I will order Bombardment from my Thundrhawk before insertion. Once all Thunderhawks are away complete the Slingshot manouver and speed away from enemy ships. You are not to enter hive Ripostes anti void engagement zone during any manouver.
The Ship will return to orbit and contact me as the allied flotillas clears out the void defenses"

So, in ooc words:
The ship will perform a slingshot manouver to speed away from the oncoming ship. It will dive into the upper atmosphere above the enemy artillery it detected earlier. Then it will continue the slingshot manouver to safety. Prefered course: towards the incoming navy flotilla. Probably not viable thought. Getting away from persuit is more important than direction. The ship will plot all courses so it will stay out of the anti-void engagement zone of hive Riposte. If it is not possible to avoid entering it will plot the course so it will have full shields before entering and keep the time within the zone as short as possible
Bombardment:
The shadow captain decides based on what the target zone camera shows him whether or not to bombard the enemy artillery with an orbital bombardment mixed with anti-detection 'mini emp'.
Insertion:
Whether or not the bombardment takes place the ships' thunderhawks will start while the ship is in the upper atmosphere. From there each will decide on its own whether to strafe the artillery, insert here, or disengage to find a safe and undetectable landing zone to be used as staging point for hit and run tactics.

Chapter Master, Lightning Claws

Lyisus studies the changing tactical situation when he spots the opening he wants.
"Veteran Sergeants to the bridge. Briefing in 5. All neophytes to combat station."

"Shipmaster, silent run. Get us as close to the com station as you can without risk of being spotted."

Mission Briefing:

First mission is the capture of the coms station. Insertion via Thunderhawks. Silent running just like the ship.

Primary Objective:
- Capture the station without any alarms. If it is abandoned all the better.
- Tech Marines rig the station for automatic sending of a propaganda video 30 minutes after we extracted.
- The video will be broadcastet to the whole planet surface.
- The video will camouflage the relay of chapter vox through encryption into the datastream

The propaganda Video is an almost static image, flickering from the imperial aquila to the chapter symbol with the text "The emperors angels are coming" in the foreground. With the barest outline of a Mark 6 power armor emerging from the shadows of the background.

Secondary Objective:
Find recordings of the statements of the planets nobility either pro imperium or therwise. I want to know who stands with who down there.

Chapter Master, Lightning Claws

According to the heresy book Legion and quite a few of the Ciaphas Cain books Lord Commanders are usually present at either large wars or important ones. They don't just sit back and relax while their generals do stuff but one Lord General is still only a single person so they have to delegate other conflicts.
You'll just have to decide whether the lord general has 'something better to do' right now.

Chapter Master, Lightning Claws

"My scout forces are not suited for space and thus possible void combat, I will recon and infiltrate the hives ahead of you. I will contact you when needed. Otherwise you will know us by our work.
May you stand in the light for we rule the shadows. Lysius out."

Having contacted the other forces Lysius leans over the tactical display of the scans of the world.
He marks 'Raised Shield' as 'presumed loyal' while marking the other hive as 'presumed traitor'.

"Master of Augers. I want a full scan of frequencies used for planet wide anouncements. The planetary governor must have made a statement of either treason or to increase morale. If not the governor then any other official will also do.
If no anouncements can be found get me coordinates of a broadcasting station or satelite in orbit of Atria III, we'll go get our informations ourselves if necessary"

Activating the ship intercom he anounces:
"Upgrading condition to yellow 1, all Neophytes are to be armored and armed for imidiate deployment but continue duties. All Sergeants are to be ready for combat briefing within 20 minutes of new orders."

Step 1:
- Make sure which side is actually which.
- Make sure which side the (possibly former) imperial officals are on
- If imperial officials are loyal: Find the figurehead of the rebelion

Chapter Master, Lightning Claws

My git is down for the moment but the data is safe and it'll be back, stronger than evAR.
I also have it checkout out locally, so only you guys won't see whats in there. Gotta trust me *evil laugh*
*cough* as I was saying, game on =3

So you mean to say he will tell your family in which servitor your parts were recyclet. If asked nicely. =3

Chapter Master, Lightning Claws

Well since the proposed pace of the game is 1 post a week max...
You might want to ask your mechanicus guys about that emotional recalibration stuff =3

Chapter Master, Lightning Claws

The Brewing Storm opens a channel to the incoming reinforcements, both Mechanicum and Guard/Navy.

A beam of highly focused radio transmission hits the respective flagships. The transmission is strongly encoded with a very recent high level imperial cipher. Signature reads 'Lightning Claws - Scions of the Raven'

When answered:

The communication opens with a flickering image of an imperial aquila, being replaced after a few flickering moments by the stylised frontal view of a raven in the process of grabbing something. The stylised bird is black, the only other color in the flickering image are the eyes in the burning red of an Astartes battle helmet and the white lightning, sheathing the birds' claws.
This is replaced, after a few more moments of flickering, by a holo image of an Astartes in very dark green, almost black, Mark 6 battle plate. The red eye lenses of the beaked helmet seem to burn through the holo image, somehow never seeming to flicker. Or is that just a trick of the mind looking at it?
"Greetings. This is Shadow Captain Lysius on Strike Cruiser Brewing Storm. I am close to Atria III, preparing to infiltrate. What news does high command bring? What intel can you give me about the fight going on below?"

Chapter Master, Lightning Claws

Yeah I jumped the gun a bit but that actually was not my intention.
Basically one of the traits the Astartes should have(at leaste fluff wise) is that you don't get to say where they show up. They just do wherever they think they should.
So my intention was for everyone else to plan their move and then get contacted by the 'unexpected' Astartes battle group when they translate into system. I just got too trigger(type) happy and wrote up what was supposed to happen later after the leader conference. And everyone else followed after the bad example xP
Sorry 'bout that.

Chapter Master, Lightning Claws

Okay, started way too far into the active deployment.

The space marine strike cruiser 'Brewing Storm' under Shadow Captain Lysisus
receives the distress call from from Atria while early on a recruitment run.
Having recruited 50 scouts of the alotted 70.
Nonetheless duty calls and there is no such thing as voicemail in 42m. Lysisus reroutes the Brewing Storm to the system, translating in at the very edge and uses the raven guard style dark running to slip past the sdf boats without affirming their allegience either way.
He brings the ship close to Atria III but stops far enough away to stay in the shadow of the void and shielded from prodding sensors by the dark run shield.
Ready to strike at the sdf boats to aid a liberation fleet or to deploy the space marine payload silently.

Bringing in a demi company of scouts with infiltration loadout. Lead by veteran sergeants and a Shadow Captain. And the companies' strike cruiser of course. It would be more sensible to talk with the commanders of other forces earlier than when they translate into the system but the Astartes being (in-)famously independant I don't think that's going to be a thing. The Astartes will help out wherever they think they are best placed.

Chapter Master, Lightning Claws

Mere minutes after the imperial navy translates into system they receive a request for communication. It is highly encrypted and a highly focused directed transmission. Following the source of the transmission however leads into the dark space close to the planet. Where nothing is or even should be, given the unknown allegience of the system defence force boats.
Accepting the transmission lights up the holo field but nothing can be seen yet. A moment later a flickering image of a power armored giant with a beaked helmet walks into view.
"I am shadow captain Lysius of the Lightning Claws second reserve company. I am currently close to orbit of Atria III. My scouts will soon infiltrate the planet to assertain the loyalties of the local leadership. What news does the imperial high command bring?"

Chapter Master, Lightning Claws

A small detachment of Astartes would mean a single demi-company I guess since that's the smallest unit size I can field?

Chapter Master, Lightning Claws

As always slow and thus behind on mandatory reading but throwing this in for space ships: I believe Ships should be almost self-sustained except for good-ol fuel.
As a reason for this I'd point to the hydroponic bays of the occurence border plus the tribes residing there. Sure it is not a military ship but its also by far not the largest ship - there is plenty of space even on military vessels for hydroponics and I believe they are noted to sometimes be on patrol for years without access to a properly equiped docking stations.
They probably can't feed even a fraction of the transported military but the crew should be fine.

Chapter Master, Lightning Claws

Not like there was a lot to copy so yet. Some Family bussiness (and ensueing sleepyness)is keeping me from making progress on the chapter but I'm still on it. Oh, and looking at some youtube vids someone posted before I make an un-lore-y chapter xP

Chapter Master, Lightning Claws

@GoW I can hear the pain =P

Leaving it at demi company size is fine by me. Thats why I talked about scout units, not scout squads.
I think 'choosing loadout' could be achieved by allowing battle line units(which include tactical squads) to act as melee / fire support units by 'temporarily' consuming a GG - that GG is in use as long as they act as said unit.
Becaues you can't give those chain swords to your new assault guys if your tactical guys are out in the field with them.
Or just drop the temporary thing and allow them to act as some other type for the duration of a 'war' for the cost of 1GG because it already makes them damn versatile compared to having to ship your actual specialists from half the sector away

Chapter Master, Lightning Claws

'Hellsreach' is the only fluff i've ever read(well, listened to) that REALLY got a large scale SM deployment right.
But thats against OVER-EFFING-WHELMING ork numbers.
The thing is an orbital bombardment nuking your largest center of resistence and then 100 space marines dropping on the face of your rebel / ork / xenos war leader and stomping it into the ground so hard the ground cracks is not really book material.
On the other hand there are some example where someone tried to write that by describing what might happen on tabletop. And thats seriously stupid. Space Marine Commanders have 200-300 years of combat experience. They are not going to order a single tank forward to have it nuked by some kind of defense turrent, then watch their battle brothers crawl out of the wreck... seriously, it does happen in fluff.

How about this:
Whenever a scout unit is in combat is has a chance to generate X Potential Graduates.
This is a resource located as marker on the unit(same as with planets, except on the unit)
Creating a higher level squad takes Y amount of Potential Graduates which can be drawn from multiple scout units.

So essentially scout units become mini planets and use the same rule as planets: generate resources, have resources destroyed when in combat(I assume that'll happen to plants too)

@Azih I like the loadout idea. But I believe GoW already somewhat turned that down because he doesn't want the complexity. Oh, and the smallest Unit my space marines get to deploy in are demi-company. So 50 space marines minimum to mess up someones day.

Chapter Master, Lightning Claws
The Ghost of War wrote:
For that mobility things, well scouts do not have either and assault marines are usually not concerned with stealth.

Throwback, I know but I got to have that cleared up for my forces to work =D

Assault Marines are not inherently stealthy with their drumming chainsword hacking and sawing enemies messily into pieces.
But I believe they ARE the go to stealth class for Raven Guard and successors which have mastered the art of being stealthy in full power armor.
The reason is while stalker boltshells exist and are definitly utilized by the RG and successors I believe they are too rare to fight a war upon their back. Lightning claws, power swords and even 'default' space marine combat "knives"(which, remember, are long enough to be swords for unaugmented humans) don't run out of shells. Maybe power cells but the only mention I found of that being an issue in the fluff is in the hellsreach crusade where chainsword powercells ran low after I think 2 months of absolute constant murdering of orks with them.

That said I'd like to add some kind of "stealth" trait to my assault marines. Because that is what they do.

One more thought to throw in:
The WiP Unit Cost has a tactical squad at 3xGG 1xOre 1xRare Minerals while a
devastator squad is 4xGG 1xOre 1xRare Minerals

Fluff wise tactical squads are the "end" of a line astartes career. They mastered being assault marines and devastators already. So instead of the tabletop "10 boltgun marines" it is actually supposed to be "10 marines which can be anything. Need assaulters? Give them some chainswords from the armory. Snipers? give them the guns. Devastators? Bring out the big guns."
So they should either be costly or "graduate" from other units
Not sure if civ has this mechanic but for space marines scouts should be the only recruitable unit. They should then graduate to full battle brothers after X turns of combat. Or go for the full fluff route and have them graduate to devastator marines, then assault marines, then tactical.

Come to think of it I should probably play some civ to get into the swing on how this will work. I'm still far too deep into fluff and not enough into civ mechanics
