About Lyn RalgarLyn has a dream, and she’s had it since she was twelve. She doesn’t have natural charm and she’s terrible with music, but she has a dogged determination, is fiercely loyal to Taldor, and she’s smart enough to achieve whatever she sets her mind to: Lyn is going to become a Lion Blade! Build notes and party role:
Lyn is an (unchained) Rogue with the Snoop archetype. She fills the skills monkey role while also being a secondary melee combatant. The aim is to take the Lion Blade prestige class down the road. It doesn’t matter too much if/when this happens, but I hope there’s room in the AP to make it work at some point. Even if she were never to meet the Lion Blades, it would still be a long-term goal that will motivate her to do well throughout the campaign. Lyn will take Underworld inspiration at level 2 to boost some more skills, and the ‘Bardic pretender’ rogue talent at level 4 in order to qualify for the Lion Blade prestige class. Before that, she might take a few levels of Brawler if it seems like the party could use the extra melee power. I’ve added a possible build progression in a spoiler at the end of the alias. Since the AP will feature many social encounters, Lyn is capable in that department. However, I’ve left her Charisma average and she’s therefore not really optimized in the social skills. Many other characters might opt for high-Cha build and I felt like the contrast would be nice: Lyn isn’t naturally at home among nobility, but she’s going to put in the effort to make it work, regardless. One last point I wanted to clarify is regarding her alignment: There are some references to Norgorber in Lyn’s background and I’ve pegged her as a N alignment. However, there’s no evil or malicious intent in her, at all. She’s mostly Good, with a dormant resolve to do what must be done if the circumstances require it: she’s also not naive as to what being a Lion Blade might entail. That’s why I pegged her ‘down’ to a Neutral alignment. Still, Lyn is optimistic, friendly, loyal, inquisitive and adaptable. Also, she’s highly secretive regarding her early childhood and cagey on her ambition to become a Lion Blade. It might be quite a while before it comes up, and if it ever does I’ll make sure (as a player) that it never becomes problematic. Full background:
Lyn Marcathon, as her name was then, had a very interesting young childhood. It was filled with puzzles, riddles, nursery rhymes with hidden meaning, and whispered truths that she was told never to repeat to any one. This life came to a sudden end at the age of seven when justice caught up with her parents, both of them practicing cultists of Norgorber. The magistrates moved to have Lyn taken into a foster home with a possible view to rehabilitation. However, a captain of the guard who worked the case took pity on the young half-elven girl with the innocent look. She told him - truthfully - that she did not know what her parents had done and also that she had no idea who “Nor-gor-ber” was - a lie, honoring the promise she had made many times to her parents. The captain of the guard, Ioseph, and his wife, Senna, took the girl into their home and later adopted her. They raised her as one of their own and Ioseph instilled on her the virtues of his work and his love for Taldor. She took those values to heart, but also never forgot about the lessons of her early life. The young girl tried to reconcile them somehow, in vain for many years. Lyn does not know precisely when it clicked for her, but her natural curiosity led her to two separate discoveries. The first, that Norgorber has a relatively moderate aspect called the Reaper of Reputation, revered by many a Taldan noble, politician and schemer. The second, that a secret organization called the Lion Blades exists, working from the shadows to do whatever needs to be done to keep Taldor safe. It was like an epiphany, the realization that this would be the perfect life for her: she could honor the skills her parents had given her (vile as their murderous acts had been), and she could act on the patriotism that Ioseph had awoken in her. The inquisitive twelve-year old started rooting out any information she could find about the Lion Blades: rumors, half-truths, and obviously false boasts from her peers who had no way of knowing for real. Following on the most consistent rumors she professed an interest in music and asked her adoptive parents to let her apply for the bardic colleges in Oppara. She turned out to have no ear for music and was summarily rejected from all of them, but that didn’t stop her. She took up acting instead, something she considered ‘next best’. She doesn’t love it as a profession, but she’s quite good at it, it’s taught her a few tricks on human behavior and has gotten her several useful friends. She’s even picked up some languages that were necessary for the roles she played. Additionally, Lyn started stalking the high streets of Oppara, socializing with the young nobility and other persons of interest. She kept working on her skills and took on odd jobs here and there to make herself useful and visible. She assumes she’s at a disadvantage for possible recruitment, being a half-elf, of common class and without a prestigious education, but Lyn will do whatever she can to get noticed. She is going to make it work. Appearance:
Lyn stands tall at 6’2”, probably the result of her elven heritage. The elven blood also manifests in a pale skin, slender build, and pointed ears that a mass of unruly black hair isn’t able to cover. Her deep set eyes in grayish-blue give her an inquisitive and critical look, especially when she draws her thick eyebrows down. However, she’s learned to open up her expression more if the situation requires it.
Lyn has spent most of her earnings from acting on getting a few good suits tailored, in order to blend in on the high streets. She favors loose trousers that afford her freedom of movement and hide her spindly legs, along with soft shirts in neutral colors that match her favorite coat, a straight model in crimson that falls just below her hips.
