Look: Dark haired, thin and dressed in modest, concealing clothes Luce would never stand out in a crowd - by design. She changes outfits often, but everything she wears is practical, sturdy and too well worn. The only constant is a fine cloak in a very dark blue, now obviously past its best but still warm and full of useful pockets.

Enemy: Jennah, her sister's utterly loyal 'confidential servant' came off worse in a confrontation with Luce and has never forgiven her for the loss of his eye.

STORY

Sometimes siblings are just like each other - and sometimes they couldn't be more different. Despite being just a year apart Luce and her older sister Susanne had very little in common, a fact that was never to Luce's advantage.
Susanne was the perfect daughter, beautiful, vivacious, a fine dancer and singer. Capable with watercolours and easily impressed by tales of daring and valor. With lovely blonde hair, pale skin and bright blue eyes she appeared to be a throwback to the beautiful maidens of olden stories - the Light of Doskvol.
Luce meanwhile was slender where her sister was curved, curt where her sister was eloquent and quiet where Susanne commanded the eye of everyone in the room. Small doubt that wits named her Susanne's 'Shadow', always trailing behind her older, better, sister. But being in the shadows suited Luce well - she learned a lot there, how to watch people, how to learn secrets, how the right words in the right ears with the right tones could have effects almost beyond imagination.
Her father didn't see that though. Susanne was his one great resource, the hope of the family. With three even younger children to take care of, his wife dead and the family money running out there was only one solution - a brilliant marriage and Susanne would be the one to achieve it. Everything the family had was given to that end, he gambled with much wealthier men to give the appearance of affluence. Susanne had the finest dresses and the house went unheated and uncleaned to provide her with pearls and jewels to dazzle with.
Luce's job was the chaperone, to watch out for her older sister and hopefully snare a match in her wake and when Susanne was finally secured a betrothal to Louis Meroth, scion of one of the wealthiest families in the city, everything seemed perfect. Until the knives came in the dark.
The thugs beat her father until he was a wreck, shattering both his legs when he refused to tell them where the deeds were and then his spine when they couldn't find the rest of his children to threaten instead. Luce kept her little siblings silent in the concealed passage behind the library and watched as Louis led Susanne, uncaring, through the wreckage of their home to retrieve her father's safe - a secret he'd entrusted to his eldest daughters in case of his death.
Hatred swelled in her heart and two days later, when Susanne's private servant Jennah appeared, ready to take "Lady Meroth's siblings home" Luce snapped and smashed a bottle in the servant's face, nearly blinding the once handsome man. Then she burned down the family home and fled, trading the years of secrets she'd carefully amassed for a roof over her sibling's heads, food and enough opium to ease her father's pain. Salia gave her a good price and Luce has put her skills to use ever since in a world almost unimaginable two years before.
Ripples in the web. Gangs rise and fall. Opportunity. For vengeance.
