Lirandra wakes early, smiling to herself at the wisps of condensation that float from her mouth each time she breaths out. Entranced by the curious swirls and eddies in the fog of her breath, it is several minutes before she slips her legs out from beneath the warm winter blanket that covers her and sits upright on her cot. For a moment she sits there, relishing the feeling of the cold tamped earth floor beneath her bare feet, before she gets to her feet, washes in the small basin in the cottage's kitchen and returns to her sleeping place where she dresses quickly in her simple brown skirt and linen shirt, slipping her soft calf-hide boots over thick woollen socks. Moving to the cottage's door she opens it sand stands, momentarily entranced by the play of light on the frost that coats the grass at the edge of the road leading through the town. Coming back to herself she steps outside, carefully closing the door behind herself so as not to wake her sleeping mother and moves around to the simple corral which backs on to the building. Mara the mule, gives a soft whinny as she approaches, moving to the feed bin and shovelling a scoop full of oats into a bucket and then moving over to feed the gentle beast. Job done, she returns inside, stokes the fire and adds a log against the chill, blowing on the embers until a healthy flame licks against the wood. Once again she turns to the door and slips outside, taking up a position on the wooden steps, where she sits and watches as the town slowly, hesitantly comes to life.

I'm fine with any of the systems... I can see that ABP does introduce some issues but i think these are outweighed by the benefits. - I think ABP is much better fluff-wise and, in a battle between fluff and crunch, I always go with fluff. If your system balances these out OK then I'm all good with that.

Map vs Theater: I think maps work better for complex encounters but that TOTM works fine when for simple ones (e.g., one-on-one combat)

Group Rolls: Definitely. Speeds things up a whole lot. Especially initiative. Perception sometimes works as spoilers (e.g.,

Perception DC 15:

The shady looking urchin is hiding a small dagger in his sleeve.

Automatic Bonus Progression: I really like ABP (hate the x-mas tree effect). I think that proplems with it (like 2 weapons etc.) can all be overcome, and i'm sure there will be various suggestions in the house rule thread on the boards. No problem if we go with ABP RAW though, or with Core rules.

... +1 for a opening the gameplay thread just to dot in if the game's not quite ready to start. It helps to be able to find the thread nice and quick.

Slight change to Lirandra's appearance based on the above....

Lirandra bears the red hair and hazel eyes of a Neralan, her mixed birth evidenced in her pale, almost pallid, skin. At sixteen, she is 5ft., 4in. tall and wears a brown cloth skirt and a linen white shirt, subtly decorated with grey traceries of thread, both are simple but well made.

I asked this question above, but you may have missed it:

I'm looking at swapping out the Fortune Hex for Slumber so that Lirandra can actually do something in combat. Would this be OK?

Also, Any more information on The Way and the town would be helpful in fleshing out Lirandra a bit more.

Just realised i didn't initially note Lirandra's alignment. She's Nuetral, unless you'd prefer good characters. I generally play good, but Neutral seems like a good fit for her. I've now included her equipment as well.

As another question (sorry) - How are witches/oracles etc. seen by the common people / Neralusians / Kesadrians? How common are these in society (i.e., would it be obvious to most that she's a witch? These attitudes would potentially alter aspects of her background that I will update as necessary. In terms of her familiar (and therefore her magic), does it make sense in the context of your world for the raven to be associated with the death goddess Vaenos - or is there some other animal more associated with death/the goddess that would be more appropriate?

Sorry - should have noted that Lirandra is Hymenoppteryx's submission, so I rolled the stats up earlier... Decided not to go with an Elf in the end.

BTW, is red hair a feature of either Neralusians or Kesadrians? What physical features differ between the groups?

Submitting Lirandra, a human, female witch (death patron). Initially I was looking at an oracle, but the bones mystery is way too undead focused, (same for shamans). The alias is recycled from an earlier campaign that ended, so disregard previous posts,.. i just want to avoid more alias bloat.

Background:

Lirandra is the child of a single mother and a Kesadrian soldier father - the result of a drunken one-night mistake that resulted in an unwanted pregnancy when she was sixteen. Lirandra's father didn't even hang around till the next day, and she doesn't know who he is, her mother, a seamstress, claims not to know his name, but has revealed that he was some kind of officer. Even when she was very young Lirandra was a strange, fey child. She would sit silently watching the adults around her with an unsettling, knowing, intensity as they went about their business, only to add short, cryptic, yet pertinent phrases. Frequently she would disappear from home, only to be found hours later sitting in the town's graveyard alone or surrounded by the ravens that made it their home, feeding them with scraps of meat or bread.

As she grew older, Lirandra developed into a quiet, shy girl with few friends, rarely joining in games but, rather, sitting by herself watching the other children, wandering the forest edge. Even then, the townsfolk noted that, wherever she went, she was followed by a raven, sitting in a tree nearby, or on a building's gables. At thirteen she began working with her mother, taking in orders for clothes to be sewn, mended or decorated. Lirandra proved adept at creating intricate decorations, often incorporating disquieting patterns that, when half-seen from odd angles, in passing, or in dim light, seemed to echo scenes of death.

Whenever a townsperson died, one of their surviving relatives, a wife, a child, a parent or a sibling would, soon after, be visited by the girl. Although none would recount what was said, they always seemed more at-peace with their grief after such a visit. Lirandra also gained a reputation as a healer, tending to wounded and sick townsfolk when misfortune struck, and the people started to whisper that she was in touch with spirits of The Way, or with Vaenos, the Grey Mistress, herself.

If we need to be in a certain place or situation at the beggining I'll add to this as appropriate, or as info about The Way becomes available.

Appearance:

Lirandra bears the red hair and pale skin of (a native of Neralus or a Kesadrian as appropriate). She is 5ft., 4in. tall and wears a brown cloth skirt and a linen white shirt, subtly decorated with grey traceries of thread, both are simple but well made. In cold weather she adds a wool-lined cloak. Those around her sometimes feel unsettled by her silent, watchful nature, which seems to remind them, somehow of their own mortality. At all times Lirandra's familiar, an unnamed raven, seems to be somewhere nearby, although Lirandra doesn't seem to pay it much particular attention except when she feeds it scraps from her own bowl at meal times.

Personality:

Lirandra is quiet and somewhat disconcerting. She retains the habit of silently watching those around her, speaking in short, esoteric phrases. She rarely exhibits emotion but exudes an odd sense of empathy, especially for those grieving a loss.

Note: Although she has a raven familiar, I don't want it to be able to speak. - Doesn't fit the theme. I've left a couple of things out for the moment, depending on feedback re., The Way and in what circumstances the campaign begins (apologies if these are already answered.)

as for equipment: I'll get to it after this...
3d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 5) = 8 x 10 = 80gp, or 105gp for average.

HP: 8/8 | Init: +5 | Perc: +4 | AC: 13 | Touch: 13 | FF: 10 | Fort: +1 | Ref: +3 | Will: +4

In that case,...

After standing Lirandra steps forward, careful to make sure she's clearly not a threat "You look hurt! I might be able to help if you want?" she says to Pylos, pausing to see if he acquiesces. If he does she touches him and concentrates for a moment Healing Hex: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Note: If I can see him he must be only 5 ft from me,... therefore any attacks on him (or against him, or any thugs he's in contact with) should have a 20% miss chance

HP: 8/8 | Init: +5 | Perc: +4 | AC: 13 | Touch: 13 | FF: 10 | Fort: +1 | Ref: +3 | Will: +4

Lirandra stands up and begins making her way through the fog (away from where the casters where), stopping to heal (hex) anyone wounded (civilian or PC) who she bumps into.

Any attacks within 20ft. of Lirandra (other than area effect attacks) should have a 20% miss chance. This should include the casters (they were both 10ft. away although one's dead anyway), not sure about the thugs since I don't know where they are in relation to Lirandra. Additionally no-one within this area should be able to see (i.e, target by site) anyone else (or even know where they are).

Round 1 action:

The Cat lets loose a yowl as he is nocked out of the way of a lady fleeing the spellcasters and flees to Lirandra, huddling between her feet. Lirandra grimaces at the spell casters causing so much panic. They're attacking the people! There must be some way to help them flee, but,..... Yes! She speaks a few quick words and knees to touch the ground. Immediately a thick fog (Obscuring mist) starts to rise around her, rising high enough to black all vision. As it does so, she takes a step back 5ft. away from the spellcasters, the Cat following.

Lirandra moves slowly towards the flow of new incommers, doing her best to make it seem that she is just moving in that direction. As she passes through the crowd she listens as best she can, trying to figure out what's going on.

HP: 8/8 | Init: +5 | Perc: +4 | AC: 13 | Touch: 13 | FF: 10 | Fort: +1 | Ref: +3 | Will: +4

Lirandra eyes the newcomers warily. I wonder why they're so late? she thinks, glancing down at the Cat. Mmmm... I feel it too:- Like a storm's coming. With that thought she turns towards the pathway and moving towards them. Coincidentally, the Cat, having finished washing itself, stands and moves in the same direction, only a few feet behind.

Staying at the back of the crowd, on the edge of the park, Lirandra watches the crowd form perking up when she sees Kethaera jump up and begin speaking. Wait a minute. Is that,... what was her name?,,... Kaethra? Katha? Kethaera? Yes that's it, Kethaera, the singer. Well she's certainly not shy about saying what she thinks. She'd keep her head down if she had any brains.. Lirandra remains where she is, watching the crowd and trying to spot Strea.

Need a new Perception roll or is the one I made above (23) OK?

HP: 8/8 | Init: +5 | Perc: +4 | AC: 13 | Touch: 13 | FF: 10 | Fort: +1 | Ref: +3 | Will: +4

Lirandra slipped through the park, avoiding the paths but making hear way steadily towards the towering shape of the opera house. Emerging at the park's edge she surveyed the scene before her with her large, red, pupil-less eyes, looking out for anyone she might recognise, but most especially, any sign of Strea Vestori. Dressed in a simple, but well-made short blue dress with a corset bodice over black stockings and leather boots, she might have been from any area of the city, except of course that the clear signs of her devil heritage, alabaster-white skin, ridged horns projecting from her forehead and a long sinuous tail, clearly marked her out as a Tiefling from the Devil's Nursery. Turning slightly she glanced down at the Cat which had sat down a few feet away and begun instantly washing itself. "Well Cat," she said under her breath "this should turn out interestingly." in reply, the beast looked up at her and, seemingly full of disdain, simply yawned widely.

Jules: We might know each other a bit if the Bellflower network and the Cloven Hoof Society are allies??? - Or Lirandra might have done some healing for the halflings for money??

Questions for DM Hell's Fox:

1: Do the Bellflower network and the Cloven Hoof Society work together at all?

2: One of Lirandra's Hexes is Disguise (1 hours/day) (Su) Can change own appearance, as disguise self but with longer duration.... The description of disguise self is...

Disguise self wrote:

You make yourself - including clothing, armor, weapons, and equipment - look different. You can seem 1 foot shorter or taller, thin, fat, or in between. You cannot change your creature type (although you can appear as another subtype).Otherwise, the extent of the apparent change is up to you. You could add or obscure a minor feature or look like an entirely different person or gender.

The spell does not provide the abilities or mannerisms of the chosen form, nor does it alter the perceived tactile (touch) or audible (sound) properties of you or your equipment. If you use this spell to create a disguise, you get a +10 bonus on the Disguise check. A creature that interacts with the glamer gets a Will save to recognize it as an illusion.

The bolded bit seems to state that, as a Tiefling and, therefore, an Outsider (native), Lirandra would not be able to disguise herself as a human, elf, half-elf etc., since she is not Technically a "Humanoid". She would, however, be able to disguise herself as any outsider (of the appropriate size). e.g. Angels, Daemons, Devils, Aasimar, Elementals etc.

I saw this ability as a way for her to blend into crowds rather than appear as a devil, and would be happy with an interpretation of the spell which only let her appear as humanoid (plus tielflings), or only as outsiders (e.g., RAW) since I can see either being useful. My preference, however would be that she can only appear as humanoids.....

Thoughts?

Could be,.... but i don't think that Lirandra has been involved in the theatre much (or even left the Devil's Nursery much). Usually I like to have as many links as possible with other PCs but I think that Lirandra is a bit more of an outsider than that.... She certainly wouldn't trust the humans in the group.

Minor changes and a physical appearance.

Background:

Lirandra remembers little of her early life. Her earliest memories consist of blurred impressions of struggling to survive in the streets of The devil’s nursery, alone except for the stray dogs that she fought with for scraps. The years of living in the streets blend into each other as little more than an impression of constant hunger. It was on the streets when she was still a young girl of ten, in the shadow of the temple of Asmodeus itself, that she met Cat. Something, Lirandra still doesn’t know what, drew her to the unusually sleek animal. As soon as they touched the connection was made and Lirandra’s life changed forever. Without knowing how, she found that she was slowly learning new abilities: the knowledge of how to cast spells, how to speak strange languages, how to heal the sick and even to change her appearance. As she grew into adulthood, Lirandra was able to use her abilities to raise herself from the alleyways. Selling healing and other magical services to the other denizens of the devil’s nursery. Since meeting Cat Lirandra’s life has improved markedly. No longer does she fight the dogs for scraps or sleep in the cold street. Even so, however, her life was not exactly comfortable. It never is for tieflings in Kintargo, a fact that Lirandra learnt all too well as she treated sick tiefling children suffering from the ills of poverty: diseases easily caused by nothing more than aching hunger, a lack of shelter or simply the ill-treatment of the guards who are more likely to kick a tiefling child than help him. It was only a year ago that Lirandra first heard Strea Vestori speak. Words of freedom and liberation, of tieflings helping each other and being accepted into society burnt into her heart with their message of hope,... that life, that Kintargo itself could be better! Since that day, Lirandra has done her best to help the inhabitants of the devil's nursery as best she can following the words of her hero. Now, however, Strea has not been seen for a full week and rumours swirl that the new lord mayor has done something to her. Surely Strea would be at the protest if she still lives?

Personality:

Lirandra is shy about drawing attention to herself, preferring to keep to the shadows and keep her head down. She doesn’t know the source of her power, and doesn’t know that she is a witch. All she knows is that she shares a connection with Cat, and that her magic is somehow linked to it. Lirandra has no close ties to anyone other than Cat, but has begun to feel the need to help her fellow tieflings more than she has in the past, convinced by the words of her hero Strea Vestori that she can not simply watch what is being done to her people without at least trying to help. Lirandra harbours a strong dislike of dogs, and Barzillai Thrune's well-known love for the beasts only serves to confirm Lirandra's low opinion of the new Lord-mayor.

Physical description:

Lirandra is 5ft.9 tall and weighs 125 lbs. She wears her pitch-black hair short, rarely bothering to comb it or tie it back and dresses in tightly fitting clothes that do little to hide her devil-like features, which consist of smooth, almost flawless alabaster-white skin, small fangs and a forked tongue, ridged horns projecting from her forehead, blood-red eyes that lack pupils and a long tail which almost always remains sinuously moving without her conscious thought. Cat, her familiar, is small, and shares Lirandra’s pitch-black hair, except the white hair on his paws and chest. Cat is never more than a few paces from his mistress, though he never seems to follow her around, rather he always seems to be there for his own, inscrutable reasons. He rarely allows himself to be handled, except by children, not even by Lirandra herself.

1st go at a background,... will polish a little if i get time. Also made some changes to Lirandra's crunch.

P.s. Compaign trait is "Star Struck" (Strea Vestori) and reason for being at the protest is "Looking for Your Idol"... seemed appropriate.
