The Exchange

Hi everyone. I'll be upfront. I'm a Pathfinder Player and I got hired to write about Pathfinder for a gaming website. The article this week is Top 5 Archer Builds. Here's the thing: I mostly play melee characters. So I'm a little lost.

My local group doesn't have many people who play archers so I'm hoping to do a little research here. Can you all help me out? I want to give good information and I figure this will be a good place to do that.

The Exchange 1/5

So last weekend was my first con.

Okay it was a larger than average Pathfinder Society gathering at a card shop but the FB page said it was a con so I'm calling it a con. Anyway, wall of tabletop game jargon ahead brace yourself.

First I played Silverhex. Yeah I know it's not the best designed thing ever but with the table we had it was pretty entertaining.

Then came nightfall and it was time for Year of the Shadow Lodge, a multi-table scenario where things that happen in one scenario can affect the other tables. Paizo needs more of those

Now my luck with the dice was already above average. I didn't roll as many low rolls as I often do. But during this scenario, my luck became obscene. I thought I had rolled 5-6 critical hits, but the venture captain thinks it was about 10.

But it is worth noting that my critical hits don't do as much damage as say a fighter or spellcaster. I play a rogue and my character is more built to inflict a Death by a Thousand Cuts than turning people into giblets in one shot. He wields two weapons and anyone caught in a sneak attack risks taking up to 10 hits. I kill a lot of people that way.

Anyway, we then reach this huge Device of Evil (not spoiling) and because he's the only one with disable device, he has to charge in by himself and retreat and get healed. Lather rinse repeat

And then we get to the final boss. And damn will saves. My character got turned into a sheep XD

Anyway next day after all that is fixed, I played a scenario where my character has to deal with lots of spiders and spider-like creatures.

I basically mutilated the final boss. To be fair, it was a scenario designed for levels 1-7. They played low but I played my level 7 character. I had already used my low level character earlier and I wanted to keep things even. There is a certain amount of joy in being able to casually walk through the opposition sometimes though. Plus if the scenarios at both tables ended early enough we could all do an extra scenario.

And the best part was, my character had a mini-arc of transforming from a calculating individual, to unhinged lunatic.

To wit, at the beginning of the scenario, he rebuked the Paladin for charging straight at the enemy instead of letting them come to the party through a choke point where they could be easily dispatched.

At the end, after dealing with many spiders, and perhaps some residual rage about the sheep stuff, he decided to charge in as soon as a mage blinded the final boss (thus making her vulnerable to taking 10 hits)

And once he got to her, I rolled another critical hit. Not that it mattered she was dead by attack number 5. He had to be talked into letting the surrendering henchmen go.

After all that, we all got together to do the Introduction to Pathfinder Society Scenario. A group of like 8-10 people did a lot of sequence breaking LOL. It was fun.
