Height: 5’6 Weight: 135 pounds Hair: Blonde Eyes: One bright gold, the other dark red. Leo has a slim, unathletic build. He had blonde hair tied back in a short pony tail, and bright, strange eyes. His features are fair and boyish to the point where it seems like he can’t grow facial hair yet (truth be told, he just keeps a clean shave). He has a pale, scholar’s complexion. When dressed for battle, he wears a silvery mithral breastplate under a tabard of black. An amulet of Nethy’s holy symbol hangs visibly over his tabard. He wears leather trousers and a white undershirt. With long black boots and gloves, he looks generally black on white. He holds a large, wooden round shield with his left arm, and his right he generally keeps unarmed for spells (though he does wear a couple of daggers at his belt). His shield has the symbol of The Tower painted on it, over a design of 50/50 black and white. He also wears his hat of disguise which appears as a dark red bandana that covers his hair. His cloak is black with white trim, which he wears with his hood up. His Hat of Disguise does nothing more (Unless stated it is being used otherwise) than to change the color of his eyes to a matching blue, hiding his unique look. In addition to this, he wears circular, lightly smoked spectacles over his eyes in case someone pierces the illusion of his Hat of Disguise. Scroll cases and wands may hang from straps or from his belt near his right hand. When out in his casual clothes, he wears a simple outfit consisting of common shoes and trousers, a white shirt and a brown vest. He keeps his holy symbol with him, either tucked under his shirt or out depending of the social circumstances. He continues to wear his hat of disguise as a bandana over his hair, and might periodically change how he appears if he thinks he is being followed to blend into a crowd.
Personality:
Leo is generally good natured and optimistic. His tries to ignore his pride as best as he can, and do whatever he can to help people. He is a bit unsure of himself, and seems rather young and innocent for his years. He is still a bit off balance from his recent knife’s edge distance from darkness, and seems to be overcompensating for it by putting on a smiling face through hard situations. Fighting for his life, and acting as a force of justice is new to him, and he isn’t yet sure how he feels about it. Though his belief that he is special has come back, it has been tempered by the last several years of his life, and now has some humility about it. “Just because someone is special, it doesn’t mean that they are better than others.” He has an easy smile, and a witty tongue when having a casual conversation. During more serious moments, however, he turns mostly inward and becomes quiet and contemplative.
People of Interest:
Grant, Emma, and Rosa Lester: Childhood friend and his family. Dear to his heart, Leo would protect any of them, but especially Grant and his Daughter Emma at any cost. Leo dotes on Emma and tells all the stories of his adventures that he is allowed to tell, to this three year old. Lenn Blackwell: Wizened and well-meaning mentor to Leo. A unimpressive wizard and priest of Nethys. Leo and Foria’s main father figure. Foriana Childs: Goes by Foria. Childhood friend, peer, and possible romantic interest. Fairly amoral. Grew up quicker and better than Leo in most ways. Currently off doing unknown tasks for the church. Things might be different between them now, if Leo were to meet her again. Cyrus Doln: Kindly father. Gave up Leo against his will and is trying to make up for it. He and his family live as farmers near Gumlat. Tria Doln: Estranged mother. Hates and fears Leo irrationally. Chris(12), Rachel(9), Meier(7): Leo’s siblings, in descending ages. Strangers all.
---BACKSTORY--- Birth:
"You are special" These were the first words ever spoken to the unnamed child with mismatched eyes. Words were spoken around him, true. Most of these words were even spoken about him, but until this moment no words had been spoken to him. Already days old, before he had been named, before he had been properly held or shown affection, before anyone had yet tried to form a bond with the child in any significant way came these words. They were spoken by Cyrus Doln on the road while he traveled to the city to abandon his son. "You are special" Cyrus and his wife Tria were simple farmers who were unused to strange things. They knew of strange thing to be sure, but these things existed in a different world to them. Their life was mundane an uneventful; at least they were up until the point Tria gave birth to her first child. Even after being slapped by the midwife, the newborn boy didn't cry out. Instead, he just looked around the room with his mismatched eyes. One eye seemed to shine in the light as a bright gold. The other gleamed a sinister dark red. Unnatural eyes. Upon receiving her newly born child in her arms, Tria nearly dropped him when he looked up at her with these eyes. Many days of arguing later, Tria had finally convinced Cyrus to take the child away, to take him to the city and give him to an orphanage. Like his wife, Cyrus didn't understand most things outside of farming. He wasn't happy about his wife's demands to give his child away, but upon consideration he understood that it was for the best. He didn't want to give his son up because the sight of his unnatural eyes make his entire body to break out in gooseflesh, instead he wanted to do it for his son. He saw these eyes as an omen. Maybe not a good omen, but an omen all the same. He saw that this child was special. He knew some of the God of magic, Nethys. He had heard of the duality of this god, how He was part salvation and part destruction. Cyrus thought that just maybe this child was a gift from this God, his eyes matching Him. He decided that instead of taking him to an orphanage as planned, that he would take this boy to the church of Nethys in the city and see what they thought. They church accepted wardship over the boy immediately.
Childhood:
The church of Nethys that Cyrus brought his son to was really more of a library or a school. This is where he grew up. Those in charge decided to name him after a renowned mage of old and gave him the name Leo. Leo was mostly raised by an old wizard of no real skill who served in this church as a kind of teacher and librarian. This wizard, this priest of Nethys was named Lenn. Lenn taught Leo things from an early age, having access to a wealth of knowledge in both the library and his own experience. He also saw Leo as special, and encouraged him to learn and to grow. He taught him morality, about good and evil, but very rarely taught Leo what he should do regarding that. Instead, he let Leo decide for himself what was right. When he was old enough to help, Leo was taught how the library worked. He was taught which books needed to be handled with care, how the scrolls were organized, and how to write out additional copies if needed. He would also sit in the classes Lenn taught, but his interests were mainly attracted to the Gods, and of course to magic. Another child was brought to the church when Leo was 7 years old. Her name was Foriana, or Foria for short. Her parents had been killed and her father, another wizard, was an old friend of Lenn. Because of this, Lenn took her in. She was a year older, taller, smarter, and stronger than Leo. He became close friends with her immediately. He didn't mind that she seemed to beat him in any competition they had, he knew that he was special, that he was chosen by Nethys for some purpose. Lenn had explained to him what an aasimar was, and the potential significance of his eyes. Leo wasn't concerned about some new kid coming in and taking his spotlight. She wasn't special, not like he was. Foria and Leo made friends with another boy later in life, a common boy named Grant Lester. Grant was 8 when Leo was 10 and Foria 11. The three of them would spend their free time together when they weren't in studies or working. Grant had spent a small amount of time in Lenn's classes before his parents' money ran out and he had to stop attending. When Leo and Foria were learning how to care for the books, Grant took out chamber pots. Grant was the kind one of the three, he was innocent and naive like Leo, but had a good heart. Foria was the terror of the group. She was the one who thought up pranks, who would encourage the other two to go where they didn't belong when they didn't belong. She didn't mind picking on people or lording her many accomplishments over others. Leo was the in between these two in temperament. His biggest quality was his pride. He knew he was special and that he had a destiny chosen for him by his god which kept him calm even during difficult moments. This was the time that Cyrus found his son. He had had another child by this point, but he never stopped grieving for the son he gave away. Shortly after his new child was born, he decided to find out what had befallen his first. Cyrus spoke with Lenn and was given the okay to talk with Leo. The agreement was that Cyrus would spend time with Leo when he came to the city (as his work frequently took him into the city to sell his crops), but that he wouldn't be his guardian. He would occasionally treat Leo, but Cyrus' wife was still chilled by the thought of him and wouldn't even take him back in. Additionally, Lenn had grown fond of Leo over the last decade and wasn't interested in giving him over to a family that had already turned their backs on him. Cyrus told Leo that he had given him to the church because he knew he was special, but Leo could tell by the way that Cyrus avoided talking about his mother that she didn't want him. That was okay, Leo was special. Sure, he didn't know the love of a real family, but that was okay. He had a destiny. Cyrus and Tria kept their next child, but that was only because that child wasn't special... Right?
Becoming a man:
Leo's life continued much the same, with a few significant changes. He continued to see his father every few months who had had another child. Foria was still better than him in most ways (She would beat Leo every time they practiced with staffs, Leo was very physically unimposing especially compared to Foria. Foria grew more adult with each passing week while Leo stayed boyish even as he grew), but it was clear even to her that she lacked his insight. Grant still hung out with the pair of them. Leo would even teach Grant how to read and write when they spent time together. Leo and Foria grew closer as they reached adolescence. Neither of them had any sibling like feelings for the other, and they grey real affection. Leo was attracted to her talent and her way of thinking of wicked ways to have fun (She would occasionally find alcohol that she would share with the other two). Things grew just a bit different when Foria started showing divine gifts when she turned 16. Her worship of Nethys had born fruit. Upon this discovery she started receiving lessons from a priest of the church above Lenn. She was being tutored in some of the secrets of the church. That was okay though, Leo was still the special one, the chosen one. Still, envy started to creep into his relationship with her. Things came to a head one day when Leo was 15, shortly after this. He was walking at night when he noticed a man suffering in an alley. The man seemed to be suffering from a bad trip. Pesh, Leo had thought. He had heard of the drug, and knew that it could make people dangerous sometimes, but all the same he decided to try and help the man. He had a skin of water and approached the man to try and offer him a drink, to maybe take the edge off of the drug. The man, Ian Marros, looked at Leo square in the eyes and froze. Leo didn't have time to be puzzled or alarmed before the deranged man attacked him screaming out things like "Demon! You'll not have me!" Leo had no way to defend himself, he was a very weak young man. He took several blows before the man turned and fled, leaving Leo injured and dazed. Off balance and confused, Leo stumbled out of the alley and into the street, right in front of a galloping horse. The rider at least had the decency to take the trampled boy somewhere he could get help. The next day, before Leo had awoken from his injuries, word had gotten to Lenn who recovered him. Leo spent a couple of weeks in bed, broken in more ways then one. It took months for him to fully recover from his physical injuries. His psychological injuries were much worse. His picture of himself, of being special, of being chosen by Nethys was completely shattered. He wasn't special, he simply had strange eyes. Aasimar frequently had unusual eyes, it didn't mean that he had a destiny. Foria was the special one, 16 and already on her way to becoming a full cleric. She probably could become a wizard if she wanted, another goal outside of Leo's reach. She seemed more and more an adult with each passing month, while he was still boyish and weak. Leo was going to be a simple librarian, the basest of the clergy of Nethys for the rest of his life. The most important he could ever expect to be would be as a tutor, teaching the next generation of kids. His moods changed. Leo became sullen, withdrawn. He spent less and less time with Foria and more time alone. He still saw his father and spent time with Grant but more infrequently as the years passed. Lenn continued to teach and encourage him, but Leo was deaf to his assurances that he was still special, especially as Foria was all but absent because of her special training. Grant married a half-elf woman named Rosa and together had a daughter named Emma. Leo had nothing any more. His pride was gone. His certainty at having his destiny reveled to him ruined. Disillusioned and bitter, the years passed. Cyrus noticed how his son had grown so cold and distant. He decided to try and cheer his son up by doing something special for his next birthday. His son was a man now, soon to be 22 years old. He was living on his own and earning his own keep without the assistance of the venerable Lenn. Indeed, it was Leo who was helping Lenn more and more often these days. Certainly enough time had passed, maybe Tria was finally ready to meet her son. He was afraid that Tria would outright refuse if he included her in his plans. Instead, he created a ruse. He convinced Tria that they had enough extra money to find a tutor for their children. He could take them into Coran whenever he visited on business and they could go to lessons. Cyrus had her come to the city with him the once to meet different tutors and see who would be the best for their kids. Leo was nearing the end of a lesson with a couple of children, both full of potential, when he noticed some people come into the church’s small lecture room. He recognized his father, but with him were a bunch of strangers; an older woman and three kids. The oldest and youngest were sons, the middle child a daughter. Each of the kids had blonde hair and fair features, just like him. Leo froze, his gaze sweeping back to the woman who stared at him with wide eyes. They met eyes for the first time in exactly 22 years. She was locked on his golden and and bleak eyes, utterly transfixed by horror. The students had frozen as well, picking up on the tension in the room. The three blonde children, Leo’s siblings, looked confused and worried. Cyrus looked back and forth between his wife and son as they stared at each other. A moment passed. Tria grabbed her youngest two children by the hands and pulled them out in the room. The oldest boy watched her mother go, looked back at his oldest brother, a stranger, before following his mother out. Cyrus saw the look on Leo’s face and tried to comfort him.
Leo was able to regain himself for just long enough to finish his lecture. After the two young children left he lost himself to his thoughts, a rage and a shame building in him. A rage of being tossed aside and a shame of not actually being special to make up for this loss. He wasn’t even given a proper name, a name that came from love. No, he was given a name to honor someone long dead by people who should have been strangers. Knowledge and realization rushed into him like a voice talking inside his head as he thought about the woman who had now turned her back on him twice.
Certain of what he needed to do, Leo turned back toward the door to murder his mother and siblings. ”L-Leo... I need your help. It’s Emma! She’s missing.” It was Grant. Grant was standing in the doorway to the small lecture room, tears streaming from his eyes. He looked utterly desperate and terrified for his little girl. The rage left Leo in an instant. Grabbing Grant, they combed the streets together, asking help from any guard who would lend an ear, looking for the small Emma. She was still so young, only three years old. Anything could happen to her in Coran. Luckily they found her, she was playing in a park that Grant had taken her to before. She loved the flowers and apparently remembered the short way back and had wandered away when Grant was busying himself elsewhere. From that moment, when Leo decided on protecting a life over destroying some others, the gift that had eluded him for so long finally came to him. Nethys, it seemed, had finally thought Leo was worthy for his destiny.
The present:
It seemed that Leo’s gift was making up for lost time. Power came to him quickly. Lenn took Leo to see the priest that Foria had been brought to when her gift had began to develop. The priest tested Leo and took him to The Tower of the Heavens. Apparently the church owed the mages a favor, and Leo fit. Leo was estatic, he always had a healthy interest and respect for magic, and to be invited to The Tower was an honor. He was tested for several months, his power growing all the while. Though still weak physically, he possessed a talent for spells. He quickly learned how to fight, at least passably well, but realized it just wasn’t his style; magic was where his soul aligned. Lenn decided that it was time for Leo to be given a last name. Being effectively orphaned, he was given the name Leo by the priests of Nethys when they took him in, but as an adult who gained the eye of their God, it was time to be given a full name fitting him. Lenn gave it some thought before he decided on the name Spellworthy to reflect Leo’s talents. When he came to a peak of experience, his skills as tested as they could be, they started to talk about what they expected from him. There was a team they wanted him to a part of, a team to help stop the enemies of The Ondian Empire. They told him the specifics would come later, but as they started to outfit him it was clear to Leo that violence would be involved. Violence was not his strong suit, but he would do his best to protect those in his team that did have talents in that regard. It was pretty quick in the outfitting process that they normal materials were too heavy for his slight frame, and so they tailored his gear to be lightweight and mobile. Soon he would be ready, and would be sent out to meet his destiny, whatever that may be.
