Sorry I disappeared for a bit. Spent lots of time outside recently and very little time on the computer. Kinda forgot about Korvosa. Back now though.

Lem wanders into the room, his hair stuck up at all angles and his eyes bloodshot and red. As he sits down there is a sharp tinkle of broken glass and he stands again quickly, reaching into a back pocket and pulling out a handful of glass shards and white crystalline powder.
He mutters to himself as he brushes the remains of the vial into his pack."Wondered where that went. Ah well, needed to get some new vials anyhow."
He collects some toast and bacon and begins constructing an infeasibly large bacon sandwich, periodically reaching into his pack or coat to sprinkle the contents of various small vials on the food until finally topping the huge creation with another slice of toast and using a hard backed notebook to squash the whole lot as flat as possible. While constructing his breakfast Lem slips a few slices of bacon inside his coat and their disappearance each time is followed by a muffled exclamation of appreciation and some crunching.
He then sits quietly chewing on his creation and listening to the conversation around him, grinning behind his hand at Asasha's outburst and realising quite how many of the group have prior relations.
Lem takes one of the pins and tucks it into one of the many pockets on the inside of this coat before finishing the last of his sandwich.

Alchemical Education:
Each time the host gains a level the fiendish face teaches it one new extract in addition to the extracts gained normally.

Enhance Alchemy:
Treat the hosts intelligence as two higher when determining bonus extracts per day.

Personality:
Select a personality from the lists provided in the Expanded psionics handbook and apply it to the familiar.

I pretty much just removed the bits of a wizards familiar that didn't really make sense for a face and repurposed the special abilities provided by a fiendish familiar. I also ended up removing the improved evasion because of the way symbionts work according to the symbiont traits.

Symbiont Traits:

When joined with a host, a symbiont gains a number of benefits. It acts on its host's turn each round, regardless of its own initiative modifier. It is not flat footed unless its host is, and it is aware of any danger its host is aware of. If the symbiont is grafted onto a visible part of the host's body opponents can attack the symbiont itself instead of the host creature. This works the same way as attacking an object. The symbiont gains the benefit of the host's dexterity modifier to AC instead of its own and gains any deflection bonus to AC the host has as well. Its own size modifier and natural armour if any still apply. Attacking a symbiont instead of a host provokes an attack of opportunity from the host. A symbiont never takes damage from the attacks directed at the host. Like a worn magic item, a symbiont is usually unaffected by spells that damage the host, but if the host rolls a 1 on its save the symbiont is one of the 'items' that can be affected by the spell. A symbiont uses its host's base saving throw bonuses if they are better than its own.
Share spells: Any spell the host creature casts on itself automatically also affects the symbiont. Likewise the symbiont can choose to have any spell or spell like ability it uses on itself also affect the host. Symbionts and hosts can share spells even if the spells normally do not affect creatures of or symbiont's type. Spells targetted at the host by other spell casters do not affect the symbiont and vice versa.

Lem raises an eyebrow at Ezekiel's question and pauses for a second, trying to adequately frame an answer before speaking.
"As I said before, I am an alchemical dabbler. I make and sell potions, unguents and cure alls as well as conduct my own little experiments, but that does not really describe the nature of my skills. Perhaps a demonstration of one of my concoctions will better showcase my talents?"
With a flick of his wrist a small vial appears in Lem's hand, the contents a strange murky liquid that shifts and slides across the inside of the glass as if alive and seeking escape from it's crystalline prison. With a flourish Lem pulls the stopper from the vial and throws back the contents in one quick swallow. He tucks the now empty vial back up his sleeve before speaking again.
"Now observe as the extract takes effect and don't be alarmed, it can be a bit of shock the first time."
As he finishes the sentence Lem's flesh begins to swell and move as if great worms were wriggling beneath his skin, his skin darkens and takes on a distinctively reddish hue, his shoulders and arms bulge and lengthen and the black hair on his head and face sinks back into the skin. The ridge of his eyebrow broadens as do his cheek bones, lending his face a much more aggresive aspect. Finally, with a faint popping of reshaped cartilage his ears lengthen to those resembling an elf's.

Perception check 15 and ability to speak Infernal:
As the transformation finishes you hear an amused, if a bit muffled, whisper issue from Lem's now tightly stretched coat. "Now why did you do that? Bloody stupid idea if you ask me, giving away that little skill to almost complete strangers. Sodding showboater."

That would actually be very cool. I was trying to think of situations where a battle of wills between Lem and the faces could take place. Wanted to eventually take the Master Chymist prestige class and have the face as the 'Mr Hyde' personality, the evasion would be a good way to lead up to it, the face starting to gain some measure of control over Lem's body.

Now that I'm back I should probably work out the familiar. Will it be like a wizard's familiar, get the alertness and stuff? Obviously won't get the evasion or anything because it is just a face. Seeing as it is bonded and intelligent it could have an Ego score and in some situations take partial control, when Lem uses his mutagen for example.

Lem glances from the notebook he had again been scribbling in as the group starts to fragment and move out of the strange underground room. He had been only half listening to the strange armoured man and the half orc and the various conversations going on around him and vaguely waved his hand in assent when the question of joining the hourglass society came up. At the mention of rooms he looked up from the series of arcane diagrams he had been sketching and clears his throat, trying to catch the groups attention before they all disappear off.

"I don't think I've met any of you before I spose I should introduce myself or something? The name is Lem Thomason and I am a dabbler in the alchemical arts. I don't really mind where I sleep but I am going to have to set up my lab somewhere and that can get pretty damn noxious, so if any of you have a particularly sensitive nose I may not be the ideal bunkmate."

Lem pushes his chair back and stands, jamming his notebook back into his backpack and then swinging the pack up onto one shoulder, ignoring the faint protesting grunt as he does so. He then begins the process of weaving through the sea of people, tables and chair legs to get to the cellar door.

Well the two bonuses that a fiendish familiar gives are:

Enhance spellcaster: Treat the spellcasting related ability score as 2 higher when determining bonus spells per day.

Arcane Education: When grafted to a wizard, a fiendish familiar can teach the caster one new spell at each level they can cast. Each time the wizard gains a level they learn one extra spell. If grafted to a sorceror or bard a fiendish familiar can function as a source of spell knowledge as described in the DMG.

The enhance is pretty simple. Treat intelligence as 2 higher for number of extracts per day.

The arcane education could be a new extract learned at each new level or possibly a bonus discovery every 4 levels or something.

And I am posted, off to an insult laden start. Might have to work out a way to define when Lem is speaking Infernal and when he is speaking common. Oh wait yeah, spoilers'll work. Anyway, any more definition of my familiar face? So far I have decided he is a resolved/obstinate personality, so lots of arguments. Also, I found the fiendish familiar symbiont from the fiend folio which is pretty much exactly what the faces are. So, could it have something similar to the effect that does on spell casters but on my alchemy?

A drunkard stumbles across the room toward the table at which Galrian and Shol'a'saul now sit, his awkward legs repeatedly tangling in the sea of chair legs and causing him to stumble. Just as he reaches their table he veers off to the left heading instead for a table just behind them. At the table a dark haired man with a bristling moustache is sat scribbling in a notebook and muttering to himself as he works.
"Look, for the last time, it has to be done in that order or the mixture curdles. However much you berate and moan and demand more testing its not going to change anythin.. Oh right fine, but its going to be another damn waste of reagents, mark my words"
The man jams his pencil behind his ear, slams the book shut and looks up just as the enebriated fellow arrives at his table. Before the drunk even has a chance to draw breath Lem is speaking again.
"Oh look another lightweight can't handle his liquor, what a surprise. C'mon then idiot, hand me my filthy lucre and I'll provide you with the means to keep drinking."
He sticks out a hand expectantly, the other rummaging around in the pack at his feet. The drunk fumbles through his pockets and eventually pulls out a few silvers, dumping them unceremoniously in the outstretched palm.
In return he gets a small vial full of a white crystalline solid and another barrage of rudely worded speech.
"Now my intellectually challenged friend, dump that little lot in your next beverage and in a few minutes you'll be feeling right as rain. Now piss off and leave me alone."
His transaction done, Lem leans back in his chair and pulls a crumpled letter from an inside pocket of his coat. Reading through it he begins muttering to himself again, shaking his head at something and then grinning widely at something else. To tell the truth, its pretty obvious why Lem is sat alone in a busy bar. Nobody wants to sit near to a man who is quite so comfortable talking to himself.

Awesome, not sure what I am rolling for so I'll just roll one of everything. And how is the familiar thing going to work? I mean most of the standard familiar/psicrystal stuff doesn't really apply as the face is grafted to me. Anyway, dice rolls.

True, I just thought it'd be a bit more useful than carting round a whole load of stuff on a contingency. Seemed like knocking something up as and when needed would be a very alchemisty way of doing things.
That and being a chemist I just think a week to make a single vial of acid is just silly. A few hours sure, but a week? I could make a reasonable amount fuming sulphuric acid in a couple of hours and fuming sulphuric is nasty. I know bringing realism into gaming is silly but the length of time that crafting alchemical stuff takes is ridiculous.
On the other hand, the more complex stuff I can see taking a while. A sunrod or thunderstone or some of the medicinal things would be hard work, all that purification.

Also, yeah I saw that when I read through the midnight archives. Nightflier is an awesome DM, been in a load of his games now.

Also, is there any chance we could use the craft points variant from Unearthed Arcana? Mean I'd be able to actually craft alchemical stuff over a useful time frame instead of a few weeks seeing as there won't really be much downtime in a pbp it makes crafting actually viable.

Nightflier, any chance you could make some crafting DCs for alchemical items, because I can't find them anywhere.
Also, before making an alchemist I never realised quite how long making a bog standard vial of acid takes. Taking 10 it takes me 2 and a bit days to make one vial. Maybe Lem went into the wrong business.

Galrian, should you not have +4 class defence seeing as clerics are now only proficient with medium armour? Doesn't seem to fit the pattern otherwise.

True, the hyper intelligence and weapon bond do help quite a bit. And I guess this way I'm less likely to hit everyone else if I miss throwing into a fight. Never mind then, carry on. Also, continuously adding to background so it should be done by the evening.

Wait, are NPCs going to have the class defence thing as well? Because then it pretty much removes one of the main advantages of my main combat ability, namely that bombs are against touch AC. Bugger.

Yeah I noticed that as well, so I changed the proportions slightly by making Lem into a tiefling. Don't want to change avatar so I am going to have to think up some interesting ways for him to freak people out with his terrible charisma. Seeing as they're both in the healing trade(ish) they could know each other simply from rivalry or Lem calling Shol'a'saul an "untutored charlatan" at every opportunity. Something like that. I still need to finish my background but I'll stick a rough idea up.
