DESCRIPTION AND BACKSTORY

DESCRIPTION:
Physical Description
A beautiful young mermaid with a cyan colored tail and bright-green tipped fins, Leala's human half has fair skin with perhaps a slight tinge of green to it and long, straight, pale turquoise hair that almost borders on white. Her eyes are green on the inner and ice blue on the other iris.

As is typical for merfolk, Leala wears little, preferring simple blue cloth wraps around her chest and hips to cover her in a way that is acceptable in human company but does not weigh her down in the water. She carries most of her smaller possessions tucked into a simple sash she wears on her hip or in a large single-strapped bag hanging over her shoulder, which he keeps strapped close to her back while travelling unaided on land.

When trying to blend in however, she usually wears a simple grey tunic and long skirt that can completely cover her tail while a hooded cloak makes her face difficult to spot. She uses a horse to move around in public, so as to hide the fact that she cannot walk.

Personality
Leala loves the sun and the blue sky, drawing inspiration and courage from its light. She often yearns to return to the sea, but a wish and a sense of obligation to see freedom restored keeps her in Kintargo.

Despite spending her late childhood and her bloom into maturity in slavery, Leala is idealistic to a point of naiveté. She wants to see freedom restored to Kintargo, and believes that with heroes like Shensen this goal can be achieved, which is why she strives to be like her. Nonetheless, Leala bears the mental scars left by her servitude. Often plagued by nightmares, there is little, if anything, she fears more than being put in chains once again. Even now that she liberated herself from Arucon Thrune's grip, the infernal bonds created for her still bind her and this sometimes is enough to drive her to the edge of despair. She keeps up a mask of cheerfulness, and a fairly convincing one, to hide her turmoils most of the time however.

BACKSTORY:
Born in the Steaming Sea, Leala spent the majority of her childhood among her kind, though a fascination with the sun always had her playing near the surface where its light was brightest. It was because of this that at a young age she got herself caught in the net of a Chelish fishing boat. Seeing a once in a lifetime opportunity to sell a very exotic slave, the fishers took their captive back to the port of Pezzack and dragged her to the slave market. A noble by the name of Arucon Thrune took great interest in the mermaid and paid handsomely for this rare find. Arucon took Leala to his estate where she was added to his personal slaves.

Here Leala was taught to entertain and please her master. She learned how to behave as a slave as well as to dance, although on land this was a unique challenge for someone like her, lacking the legs and feet or a tail strong enough for moving around. She was also taken to a temple of Asmodeus, where a ritual was to ensure her servitude, binding her to infernal contracts.

Soon after acquiring Leala, Arucon brought her to Kintargo, where he intended to aid his cousin Barzillai in keeping order in the city. It was here that Leala began hearing the stories of the woman known as Shensen, who opposed House Thrune's tyranny. She became infatuated with this hero of the people, a worshipper of Sarenrae, the Goddess of the sun, which had always fascinated Leala and had given her the strength to hold on even if she was in chains. The way Shensen's deeds angered her master gave Leala hope and emboldened her spirit to strive for freedom.

One night Arucon when had passed out after a long celebration with much alcohol, Leala saw a chance to free herself. At this point, having lived for several years on land, she had become used to moving on dry ground, although she was still forced to drag herself forward with her hands, and nowhere near fast enough to escape a pursuing human, she had at least become slightly faster. Leala began setting fires to distract Arucon's men and force them to see to their lord's safety, while she would make her way out through servants passages. Encounters with house guards were easily handled, if nothing else useful, her fellow slaves had taught Leala how to use her wits and charm to make others do what she wanted.

The fires spread quickly however, faster than she could move. As she pulled herself forward she began to feel a warmth inside. One that was nothing like the unforgiving heat of the fire threatening to surround her, but rather like the warm summer sun on she used to feel caressing her body when she used to float at the surface of the sea, basking in the light. It was as though a woman's voice whispered to her saying "I will guide your way.".

The warmth soothed the the ache in her arms and tail from dragging and inchworming across the hard floors of the manor, and gave her strength. She no longer felt the floor's harsh scraping against her tail as she pulled it in and her body felt much lighter. With the aid of this divine warmth, Leala escaped the flames and exited through the manor's servants' entrance, where other escaped slaves and servants were already gathered, but too busy staring at the flames consuming the building to pay the mermaid any mind.

Leala took a nearby horse to carry her toward Bleakbridge, from which she jumped into the Yolubilis. Swimming out to the bay, Leala finally stopped when she felt she was safe from any pursuer. Nursing her burns, she found the warmth she felt earlier emanating from her own hands, restoring her singed flesh. Seeing what she was capable of, Leala decided to return to Kintargo, feeling she had been called by the voice that had spoken to her and given the power to help end the tyranny of the Thrunes.

When martial law was established, and Leala heard of the mounting protest, she decided to follow the congregating protesters, hoping at once to see how this protest would pan out and perhaps to meet the famous Shensen whom she saw as a role model at this point. Clad in a long-skirted commoner's dress and a hooded coat hoping to hide her identity -and her tail- Leala took a horse and rode to Aria Park.
