Appearence

Spoiler:
Lazarus is generally well groomed, particularly his hair. While it is long and flows down over his shoulders, he tends to keep it tidy and clean. A perpetual smile sits upon the little gnomes face, and it grows broader and more mischevious whenever a pretty girl crosses his path.

He has a number of sets of clothes, suitable for most occasions, including his performances if the mood so takes him. Mostly he can be seen in his travellers garb and the expensive armour he had made for himself. His prized posetions are the Masterwork cross bow and small case of special bolts he carries with him at all times. The Crossbow is from the workshop of the famed bow smith Lovierre, and the gnome takes care to treat the item well.

A cloak of green edged with a gold knot of celtic design completes the appearence, and this is often used for a grand entrance or dramatic turn. The little man can't help but perform whereever he goes, be it either in song or merely in teh voerdramatic way he acts.

Background

Spoiler:
Lazarus Quint was a rogue, a wanderer, a free spirit. He couldn't settle for more than a few weeks in one place before the urge to travel and experience the world at large had him packing and leaving. That and his love of women. He loved them, he couldn't help it. It didn't matter that he was a gnome, if he met a beautiful woman he would flirt shamelessly with them and for some reason it tended to upset the men wherever he stayed. So he roamed.

His recent travels through the mainland and its politics and war have left the little gnome feeling somewhat empty however. He'd always gathered stories on his travels, collecting them like others would coins or flowers. He nurtured each story, mulling over its place in the world he travelled, before he carefully recorded it or worked it into a tale of his own. Ten years of war had started turnig many of those stories to tragedy and bittersweet endings and the Bard's heart had grown heavy. He had travelled to this place of forests and rough seas in search of somthing new. A spark of the humanity he had seen pass from those he knew on the mainland. Here, on the edge of the world, where nature ran wild and reminded him of times more wonderful he looked for something to give him faith in the world again.

And the women here were beautiful too.

His nemesis
Ellias Dothe was a gnome traveller Lazarus "looked up" in the small town of Lousielles (or insert a suitable mainland town). The gnome seemed affable enough and was certainly a good travelling companion. The two of them spent a good few weeks together in town swapping stories and carousing the bars, all in all an enjoyable prospect.

However, one morning Lazarus found himself under the "custodail care" of the local constabulary as a consequence of his friend using his name and some of his personal gear in a jewel heist. The two gnomes looked of similar enough appearence that Lazarus was "positively" identified by one of the people who was robbed and so he spent three weeks in the care of the towns gaolers until he managed to use his considerable diplomacy skills to convince the travelling Justicar to let him go.

He caught up to Ellias 3 months later in a small seaside town and repaid the favour by seducing the gnomes half elven accomplace and getting her to drug his drink one evening. The bard then slipped into his room and planted some banned narcotics in his room and tipped of the local authorities about the stash, claiming Ellias was the infamous drug dealer "Erny" the Dram, who'd been msuggling drugs for years in the area.

Since then the two have occasionally run into each other and when they do, one or the other usually ends up in trouble as a consequence of the others actions. It's getting to be quite frustrating for Lazarus.

The San Frieden Pearls

On his way through the "Isles" Lazarus stumbled upon a lone man beset by a group of masked bandits. The man fought hard but had taken a number of serious blows and was bleeding heavily when Lazarus arrived. The gnome opened his part of the fray by casting his sleep and dropping two of the opponents to unconciousness. He then began trying to snipe the remaining thugs with his bow. The sudden arrival of a seeming ally had the men retreat and Lazarus was able to reach the sying man lying in the gutter of the road. As he knelt trying to staunch the blood flowing from the wounds of the stranger, the little gnome came to an all time low in his life. He had seen and heard of so much death and tragedy in the last few years of the war that he felt the world was truly lost. To a gnome who revelled in love and life, this was anathema. He desperately worked on the man and to his surprise and delight, a previously untapped source of healing welled within him and he was able to stop the bleeding. The man introduced himself as Fiallad McAude, working for the Marquis. The two of them spent the next three weeks fleeing the pursuing thieves and murders intent on stealing back the Pearls that the Fiallad had recovered from them. It turned out they belonged to the Marquis and Lazarus swore to see that McAude returned to safety and deliver the pearls. When they finally arrived at the Marquis' castle, Lazarus was surprised at how much his part in the venture was played up and how well he was rewarded by the generous noble. It was this that renewed the little Bards faith in the world and sparked again his wanderlust and search for the true stories of the land.

A song for the Fallen
While travelling the Noble lands of the mainland, Lazarus met the widowed Lady Ormeua. While not trying for any romantic involvement, he did find her entrancing as a companion and offered her the friendship and companionship she had craved for the two years since her husbands death. When she asked the little Gnome to travel further south and find news of her son, fighting in the wars, Lazarus was only too happy to help. Unfortunately, he arrived just in time to witness her sons final act, in a futile but heroically brave charge against teh wood elves of the Brielle forest. The little Bard watched the event and composed for the Lady a ballad of heroic nature, effectively immortalising her son for all in her realm, and paintng his life in a bold and great tale. As a gift for his deeds, Lady Ormeau gave to Lazarus the small case of magical crossbow bolts that were the last of teh battle gear her husband had left behind. He carries them and the masterwork crossbow he had made for him from the Marquis money but hopes never to need the use of them.

DM info to me (don't read if you're a player in this campaign please)

Spoiler:
Lazarus Quint
Lazarus can be first or second level, I’ll let you choose. When you flesh out his background see what suits the gnome.

He can have a trait of your choice as well. Either homemade or from the PF books. Wealth will be the standard for his level plus 300 gold. That money came from the return of the San Frieden pearls to the Marquis.

Information You Would Know – use your bardic abilities and ask questions as the party adventure and I will supply you with the snippets that you would have picked up on your travels. Essentially Lazarus can have been all over the north of the mainland, possibly seen a little of the south too before the war, maybe with his mother or father on their travels. However he has been at least to the main island of the Lochillins, the isles that the Marquis controls.

The Marquis
He was a vibrant warrior with a questioning mind, extremely well read and married to a lovely woman, deeply religious follower of the Dove. They would both be in their late fifties now. They had a pair of fine daughters who both married well onto the mainland into “good” families. They regularly held wonderful fetes for entertainers and artists which their people loved. However the wife, Helena Burnd died of an assassin’s barbed dart, poisoned and killed as she returned from Church. That was four years ago.
The Marquis joined the war and took his soldiers with him. Lazarus has heard of the man’s anger. It is typical of the people of the Lochillin’s where going berserk happens with frightening results. Lazarus will have seen inns where the fight just starts like the click of fingers.
Lazarus hasn’t seen the Marquis since he left but the word is that he returned recently, a broken man, to live out his last few years.

Lochillins
The main isle, Lochillin, has several smaller ones around it and the odd patch of rocks in the sea. Pine forests, lochs and narrow gorges with rivers make the isles tough, tough to eke out an existence on. People generally live in small communities, fishing hunting and gathering. Some herding does go on too.
Mostly human but there are little groups of the other races mentioned, including one or two high elves. But Mothman’s PC will definitely come from the mainland.
As you move closer to civilisation things get a bit softer and the villages tend to grow larger. Lochillin port is the centre for everything. The Marquis’ castle stands proudly on a hill overlooking the large town below.
How you came by the San Freiden pearls, I shall leave to your creativeness but they are highly magical and valuable, and did belong to his last wife until her death. The 300 gold I have given Lazarus is what remains of his thanks. He actually gave Lazarus 500 gold but that was four years ago. What’s left represents money spent wisely….

On Gnomes
As far as your family are concerned, seeing one or two every few years is the sign for a brewfest. The gnomes love to brew and love all manner of alchemy. They would make great apothecaries but only ones that travel. Typically a wandering gnome will hear about another in the area and just decide to look him up. From time to time the wanderlust leaves a gnome and he will find a place to settle and explore, maybe even raise a family if the right pretty nose comes along.

The Letter
Recently Lazarus was working in the north, not far from the coast when a messenger arrived one night. A bedraggled and tired messenger searching for you. He had a letter from the Marquis. He had been sent to find Lazarus about a week ago on an urgent matter.

My Good Lazarus
I need your help again. Since you have been of great service to myself in the past on the matter of the Pearls, I trust I can count on your acquiescence this time too. Either way, let my man servant know your decision. If you are unable to be of service then let him know the name of a suitable replacement please.
My task is simple, I am organising a party of various talents to aid me with a problem on one of my islands. My time away at the war has been arduous and long, the lands have fallen foul and need urgent attention, alas my health is not what it was so I cannot devote my time to this personally.
You would be an ideal person to serve my needs. Your remuneration will be satisfactory and we can discuss this when you arrive in Lochillin Castle.
However I also need the assistance of a mage, and it would be good if you could bring him here on the way I would be grateful. The mage is a protégé of the half-elf Aristor Ganaeus who I believe currently resides in the village of Flamboun near to the town of Chalcy. There is a letter of introduction for Staff Sir Ganaeus that explains everything. Your experience of the open road should help alleviate any problems that the protégé may encounter along the way to me.

Marquis Burnd, Master of the Lochillin Isles, Devoted of Our King Hezeroux
