Why is Lawdrak on this ship?:

“I’m not so sure they are supposed to have horns and spikes like that. I don’t remember Bloodspeaker Thuum ever talking about them,” opined Bloodspeaker Kasha, twsiting a long braid of her gray hair around her finger as she gazed down at the vivid red corpse of an allosaurus. The hunters of the Scale-Riders had brought it down as it attacked the tribe’s large and well-guarded mammoth herd, unusual in itself.

“True, but Bloodspeaker Thuum was senile before either you or I earned our staves,” replied Bloodspeaker Kulgor. The thin, balding man was the eldest of the three people standing around the unusual beast. “That, or the rumors about the syphilis he picked up in Tulgoth,”-he named the trading city in the northeast of the Realm of the Mammoth Lords, a mere three leagues from the western end of their tribe’s usual range in the incongruous lush, jungle filled valleys near the Crown of the World – “driving him mad were true. In any case, yes, I think this critter does look unusual. I think we’ve seen more unusual @#$t as the years go by and the demons fester in old Sarkoris. But the histories don’t give us enough details to be sure. OR enough to let us know what the Scaled Ones should look like, act like. Many among the Bloodspeakers might have the power to reverse the damage – if we knew what it was.”

“There’s always the cave-paintings. The elders – well, my predecessors as elders – say that they’ve been there from time out of mind. We can see what the Scaled Ones look like in them, can’t we?” said the third of the trio, Elder Gulrak, scratching at his short, iron-grey beard.

“Maybe…”began Kasha, uncertainly, but Kulgor cut across her.
“My colleague, here, would say that the drawings are stylized, not real, accurate pictures. I think it wasn’t so much a stylistic choice as it was that our honored ancestors couldn’t draw for crap. No, we can’t rely on the paintings.”

The three stood in silence for a minute, staring at the dead beast. The elder cocked his head, a speculative look on his face, and spoke:
“Do you remember that Desnan priestess that came through here, oh, about twenty years ago? The wanderer? She talked about Scaled Ones in other places…dino-sores, she called them. She said she had seen others far south, across the Inner Sea. “

The Bloodspeakers nodded slowly, their eyes far away, remembering. They turned to look at each other. “We could send someone. Let them have a look, see what they behave like somewhere else…real eyes on them,” Kasha offered.

“Lawdrak,” Kulgor answered at once. “Good head on his shoulders, but, gods, does that boy need to get out and see the world.”

What is the boy like?:

Lawdrak never thought he would leave the jungled valleys of his home. One, Kellids just didn’t DO that. Two, it was COLD out there. When he tells people that he is a Kellid from the Realm of the Mammoth Lords, people seem to expect him to be some fur-covered Ulfen, the snows of the north still on his shoulders. He had seen a winter, once. Didn’t hold with it, personally. The further south he got on his epic quest, the happier he was.

Here he was, though, off to observe the dinosaurs of the Mwangi Expanse at the behest of his Bloodspeakers and Elders. They thought that the Worldwound was hurting and warping the Scaled Ones in subtle, blasphemous ways, and they were probably right. The problem was, no-one was still alive from the time before the Worldwound to tell them what the dinosaurs were supposed to be like. The Bloodspeakers of the Scale Riders tribe were all really old, so their senior novice and his young fresh legs made the trip for them.

Lawdrak is young (17-18…no one is really sure. When he asked when he was born, he was told “In the spring”*) and painfully inexperienced with the world outside the primitive tribes of a Kellid Lost World. He thought that he would be painfully homesick, but he is having the time of his life. He knows that he lacks polish, and, when he remembers to be, he is still deeply suspicious of these soft, civilized outsiders (he fed a pickpocket to Sharpmaw in Kalsgard). He covers for his awkwardness by overplaying the role fo the sullen, laconic barbarian. And by Keeping Sharpmaw close by. It really is amazing how many idle conversationalist a growing T-rex keeps away. Except for Gnomes – they’re fascinated with the tiny dinosaur, for some reason, and Sharpmaw seems entirely too friendly to them. Lawdrak has not yet really learned how to deal with Gnomes.

Lawdrak is tall, but thin (the unkind would say gangly) for a Kellid. Maybe his journey will help him fill out a little. He wears his brown-black hair long and loose. His future-Bloodspeaker’s beard is currently a small dark patch on his chin, which he will gladly lose a limb before shaving off. He wears a heavy stegosaurus hide tunic, but most of his other clothing is light, grey-dyed linens, perfect for jungles – his native ones, or the ones he is journeying in search of.

*Thank you, Crocodile Dundee, for that joke…
