Background
“Lavios! Your garden is coming along wonderfully!” Cassandra said admiring the assorted flowers coming out of the ground. “Thanks, mother, I’ve been working on it all day” Lavios replied wiping sweat of his forehead. “So I’ve seen” Cassandra said, standing up “Come in Lavios, your father will be home soon” Lavios followed Cassandra into a cottage. The cottage was located in a forest dedicated to the worshipping of Gozreh. Life in woods was simple and safe and the worshippers of Gozreh liked it that way. Lavios’ father, a grizzled and unshaven woodsman, stepped into the cottage. Cassandra smiled as the man walked in. “How’s the woods, Lavian?” Cassandra asked. “Perfect as usual” Lavian replied as he walked over to his adolescent son. “Lavios, it’s time you came to the woods and worked with me” A smile spread across the face of the young boy “I can’t wait too!”
12 years later
Lavios stared at the group of ruffians armed to teeth with assorted barbaric weapons, axes, spears, and torches. Lavios knew how to track from following animals and tracked the bandits, all the way to the group of cottages where he lived. Lavios dared not to make noise knowing the bandits would skin him alive. He silently took out his woodcutting axe and waited in a dense patch of trees until the bandits reached the center of the cottages. Calas, a cleric of Gozreh and father of Cassandra, stepped out of his temple to confront the bandits “Please, gentlemen! We are woodcutters and sustenance farmers, We have nothing of value!” “The largest of the bandits stepped in front of Calas and growled “We’re not out for reward”. He shoved the old priest aside and he, along with some other bandits hurled their torches into the church. “No!” Calas yelled as he stumbled to get up “Shut up old man!” One bandit said kicking him in the stomach. Lavios didn’t want to watch anymore, he leapt from his hiding spot and charged at one of the bandits. Lavios’ years of woodcutting put muscle on him and gave him decent fighting skills. “Huh?” one bandit said and turned around. The sight startled him, a large, bearded man with a large axe, not the kind of person he thought to be in a place like this. Lavios dug his axe into the skull of the bandit. The body of the bandit hit the ground, alerting the leader of the bandits. The leader snarled and said to his posse “Borskot! Malin! Kill him!” Two of the bandits charged at Lavios. One of them went to stab Lavios with his spear but it was deflected by the woodcutter’s axe. Lavios swung his axe at the spear wielding bandit, he smiled as the axe found home in the bandits chest. His glee was short lived as he felt a body slam into his back and knock him over. Lavios looked up as the second bandit was about to lob off his head. The bandit was about to finish Lavios when an axe struck the bandit in the head. The once-living bandit fell to reveal his father to be his savior. “Dad?” Lavios asked while being helped up. “Yup” He replied handing Lavios and longsword “This will do better than that axe” Lavios smiled knowing he has someone watching his back. Most cottages were now burning and the entire village was in calamity, bandits fighting the other lumberjacks and normal civilians trying to find shelter. Lavios and Lavian kept fighting off bandits. The number of bandits kept dropping as they died and ran off. “Who knew woodcutting could help someone fig-“Lavian’s word cut off by a throwing spear going through his stomach. “Dad!” Lavios cried out as he rushed to his side. “They’re… escaping…” Lavian sputtered out. Lavios looked up as bandit leader and some other bandits were running off with people they had kidnapped, Cassandra being one of them. “Go… rescue them… kill the captors…” Lavian’s eyes slowly shut. “Dad…” Lavios sobbed. Lavios looked at the village through his tears; everything was on fire, the cottages, the surrounding forests, and even the church. “Lavios!” Calas cried out, running towards him. “Lavios I’m sorry…” Calas said. “I know where they’re going, I know someone who can help, come here” Lavios followed Calas over to a cellar, the only thing that wasn’t in raging immolation. The cellar was small and only had a book in it. “Take this” Calas said “It’s a guide to help you. I overheard what your father saying that he wanted you follow and stop the bandits. The book has prayers, prayers to call upon spells to stop your enemies. These spells though are… out of the ordinary… they are not typical cleric spells.” “Not typical?” “These are more towards harming people” “It will help me, thank you” “You are welcome, and take this” The cleric said handing him a chain-shirt. “Before you leave Lavios, promise me this, Cassandra will get home safe and exact revenge on all heretics related to the bandits that attacked us today” “I will Calas, I promise” “Good, the I heard the bandits say they’re heading to Absalom, a rather large city. There should be a man in Absalom I knew, his name is Caleb, and he’s a bard. In the book I gave you was a map of the world. It should have our location and the location of Absalom. Go Lavios, let Gozreh be with you” With that, Lavios nodded and made his ways towards Absalom, towards vengeance.
