Background:
Tessa was 8 when she got her first job. She was accepted as a servant in the Lord Mayor Telven Andoran’s home. There was truly nothing unusual about her employment, including the fact that once she hit puberty the men in the household all started convincing her to entertain them. After the first one convinced her to play along, others had an easier time of it. It didn’t take long for her to turn up pregnant. A young servant girl pregnant in a Lord’s service finds herself unemployed. Tessa was barely 15 when she gave birth to her first child, Larry.
Nobody can really know for sure, but Tessa told Larry that Lartol Andoran was his sire. Many times and with a wide variety of emotions in play each time, she told him this. Tessa took work as a washer woman. Their family continued to expand. Larry had a hard youth of labor, trying to make sure that he and his siblings got to eat. It seemed that somebody was always giving his mother a little something . . .. She never did tell any of the other children that they were actually Andorans, though. Shortly after Larry started getting hair in places where he hadn’t had any before, he was offered the opportunity to join the Lord Mayor’s small army, or be thrown out of the territory. This had the advantage of getting Larry out of his life of complete poverty, but Tessa wasn’t done making his life difficult. When they asked him his name, he answered Larry Andoran. First they laughed. Then they told him that claiming to be one of the bastards of the house would just make his life harder. Larry was bright enough to shut up at that point, but the damage had been done. Apparently Telvan had given orders for handling soldiers who claimed to be bastards from his family. Larry’s training was abbreviated. He was assigned the most dangerous missions, as part of a unit built from criminals and those claiming to be his half-brothers and cousins. The low training and more dangerous assignments created a group of desperate men. Many would kill anyone they thought could be threatening, as a matter of self-defense, of course. Such killing was far too common. The attrition (and desertion) rates among the Bastards (the common, unofficial name for the unit) was far higher than in any other aspect of the Lord Mayor’s forces. Larry became a desertion statistic after only a few months. Larry knew enough about how to hold a spear that he quickly found work as a caravan guard, and he went where that work took him, but he worked hard at never going back to Ardis. It didn’t take long, working with caravans, to find himself in Caliphas. With a few coins in his pocket and a world of opportunity in front of him, Larry took another big gamble, and went looking for a school or private militia where he could get better training in what had become his line of work. The hard part, here, was finding someone who could use Larry to make money while training him, because Larry simply could not afford to pay the full cost of such training on his own. Garrat, who ran and operated Torrance’s Terrors, bodyguards for hire, saw an opportunity to make more than his usual share of profit by agreeing to provide Larry the training he was seeking. Garrat was amazed at how happy Larry seemed to be with such little money and food s Garrat provided him. Larry was ecstatic to have any spending money, and the freedom to use it, while he was getting the training he was seeking. After his time in the Bastards, Larry responded relatively calmly to angry mobs, armed assassination attempts and even rumors of unnatural threats. He was, after all, raised in Ustalav. After several years training with Torrance’s Terrors, Garrat admitted that the training was complete and offered Larry a normal employment contract with the group instead. Larry happily accepted, and things seemed to be going well enough, until the day he ran into some of Telven Andoran’s men, and they recognized Larry. It seems the good Lord Mayor of Ardis had come to Caliphas for some reason that Larry never discovered. His men recognized Larry as a deserter, and began chasing him through town. Larry had the advantage of knowing the territory, so he was able to lose them. They had the advantage of representing the law, so Larry became a wanted man in Caliphas, too. Larry gathered his belongings and his savings, told Garrat goodbye, and why he was leaving, though Larry himself didn’t know where he was going, yet, and he skipped town. Since then, Larry’s been trying to look the part of a common militia solider or unassuming personal bodyguard while he tries to find a place that he can stay a while. Now, let’s be honest. Nobody is really hunting for Larry Andoran. If anybody in authority from Ardis or Caliphas stumbles over him and realizes they have a deserter from Ardis, then he will have a problem. Right now, nobody knows where he is (him included, basically) and pretty much nobody cares. Combat Stats:
