I of all people can understand the need to take time out and deal with real life things from time to time. I'll be sitting here patiently waiting in the background :)

Kystra looks anxious to continue their exploration.

Kystra follows the group wherever they go.

Kystra maneuvers to the side of the beast and strikes out again.

Heavy Mace attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

Kystra moves 5' to G11

Knowing that the beast is outnumbered, Kystra will gacefully move forward, with mace and shield in hand.

Move to H12.

Mace attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

Kystra will scan around the area.

Perception check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

Kystra nods her agreement to Kythas, "As long as we are able to, following the tracks seems most prudent at this time."

Kystra nods at Dantes' suggestion. "I will do my best to forage during our patrol." Purposely being a little less alert to danger, Kystra will inspect bushes, plants, berries and roots as they pass by them for their nutritional or medicinal properties.

Knowledge (nature): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13

Kystra will stay close to Avarthiel and Kythas during the hunt. During the hunt, if anyone plans to eat any leftovers from the night before or drink any water collected in the area, Kystra will insist on casting Purify Food and Water. "We cannot risk anyone falling sick at this time. Every precaution should be made."

Kystra agrees to burning the bodies, unless she notices anything denoting either of the deceased religious affiliation, in which case she will suggest that the appropriate funeral rights should be followed.

Aerys: Kystra remarks, "Kythas I fear suffers the same affliction, and perhaps finding hims some of those berries would also be useful."

Jask & Others: "After some breakfast I should be ready for a small exploration."

Kystra is startled slightly when she is woken up. She frowns at having falling asleep while trying to watch out for Aerys, but smiles to know that she is alright and did not leave on her own.

She hears Kythas call out from below. In Polygot she'll tell Aerys, "fear not if he starts to go off on a tirade again, I'll use my gift of enchantment to make him eat sand." Kythas will laugh slightly after that, to let her know that she is joking... mostly.

Kystra can feel her stomache churning and will try to momentary take her mind off her hunger by taking a sip of water from her wineskin. Just as she removes the top, the contain slips from her hands. Kystra quickly recovers it, but not before a few lifesaving mouthfulls of water have escaped.

Kystra's face goes flush, however within a few seconds she calms herself replacing the overwhelming amount of anger with a slim smile and the composure of acceptance.

In Polygot Kystra will say, "I can understand you are troubled now, and I certainly don't want to be a source of any more trouble for you. I also do not think you should be left alone here. This is a dangerous place. You may not currently care, but I do. I can not leave you alone but I will cetainly leave you with the peace you desire. I will tend to your wounds and then let you sit in solace, but I will be nearby. When you are ready to return to camp, just let me know. When we return I will ensure you are not bothered by anyone if that is your desire. But know this. I wish to be your friend, whether you want to be or not. If you are not prepared to return to camp I will if necessary drag you back to camp, for your own good. I will do this not because I wish to be mean to you, but because I am your friend." Kystra smiles and will conjure forth healing magic to mend her wounds. Kystra will then withdraw to a safe spot where Aerys and her can see each other.

Cure light wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8

Kystra will call up to Aerys before she approaches her. Kystra will again repeat her words she called out to her while she ran.

Kystra will try to calm he down and will then ask her again what she wanted to talk about.

Diplomacy check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

If for any reason she tries to run again, Kystra will try to slow her by castings of Command. If Aerys seems unresponsive to Kystra's attempts to calm her down, she will repeat the attempts in the language she heard Aerys speaking in.

Kystra glares at Kythas, and runs off after Aerys. Once they are well out of earshot of the camp Kystra will match her pace but will not try to touch her or stop her. Trying to walk beside her she will ask, "I feel so sorry about Kythas' little tyrade. It seems all of us are out of sorts right now. That was not the Kythas I have seen during the trip... well not the sober Kythas. He had been sipping from the rum quite a bit."

Kystra will then slow her pace a little, hoping Aerys will unconsciously do the same. "It seemed you had something you wished to talk about privately. What troubles you friend? Please be assured I would take anything you provide me in complete confidence." Should Kystra see a fallen log anywhere, she will say, "please, lets sit so we can focus on talking".

"I am also eager to explore our surroundings and would like to go." Kystra says somewhat excitedly.

Kystra nods at Lilly's suggestion. "Certainly, I will do my best."

Kystra has a few reservations about appointing Aerys as a guard due to her need to be drunk. With a dwindling supply of alcohol though, Kystra decides that perhaps this might help Aeyrs keep her mind off not being drunk.

Kystra will approach Aerys and will at first exchange a few pleasantries and will offer her some bandages for her hands. Kystra will then ask, "Aerys we could really use you to perform guard duties for awhile. Would you be willing to help keep everyone safe?"

Diplomacy check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21

Sort of going back in time a few minutes here (sorry Kythas):

As Kystra finishes talking to Avarthiel, she notices Kythas approach her with an odd item in his hand. Kystra looks at the wooden plate and smiles. "Well thank you Kythas. It does appear that I need some more experience in 'roughing it'. I've gotten a little to used to the creature comforts of home. I appreciate the effort you put into crafting me a suitable plate to help quell my idiosyncrasies."

"Avarthiel is just now gathering some of the others to tell the tale of the journal."

Kythas: Whoops, oh I see the post now that you were referencing to. Sorry, I completely missed that.

Although Kystra is fairly quiet and reserved, she was raised by a town councilor. She has been involved well in political life and knows the benefits of diplomacy... she just has never been in situations where she needed use of it. This indeed could be a good character development career path that Kystra could build on. (I'll add a rank for level 2)

Kystra nods at Avarthiel's suggestion. "I think it would be fine if they knew as well."

Kystra reviews her findings with Avarthiel (In Elven):

Kystra will read forth some of the more notable entries. Best to click the Spoiler tag DM Patcher gave above

"It is my best guess that the Captain carried through with his plans. Perhaps he poisoned us, leaving us to die, and marooned himself and Ileana on some island, perhaps even on this land that we are at. This is only a hypothesis I have patched together from the journal entries. The sudden change in the Captain's behaviour could simply be due to an obsession, but perhaps it also shows signs of either possession or enchantment." Kystra shrugs.

"Perhaps I am just tired and making up stories where there are none. There doesn't really seem to be much in the journal that helps us. Although, I may take another look at the maps to see if perhaps the captain marked the island he intended to go to. If, we are on the same island then we may know where we are." Kystra shrugs.

"I'm not sure if there is any merit in telling people of my suspicions at this time, however should we run into the Captain or Ileana around here, I will indeed have some questions to ask them."

Once she is done conversing with Avarthiel, Kystra will then review the maps very closely looking for any kind of a small dot or pin prick on an island.

I'm just looking through the IC thread and I can't seem to find a list of "survivors". If there is one, could you please link it for me. I don't believe Illeana is on shore with us, is she?

Kystra thanks Kythas for the fine meal. Having seen Kythas pick up a peice of drifwood to use as a plate, Kystra looks down and picks up a similar peice. In the firelight she notices how filthy the wood really is, caked in sand and dried sea foam. There are many holes in it as well, burrowed by insects. She throws the driftwood into the fire and takes a chunk of the meat and holds it with both hands.

Kystra walks away to a secluded spot in the camp and begins chewing away at her meal. Once done, she will lick her fingers clean and will then retrieve the Captain's journal and will start reading it.

Kystra will try not to stay too engrossed in reading the book and will occasionally glance up to ensure everything is fine. She also keeps her mace lying on the ground beside her. Occasionally the wind seemingly picks up around her, causing the pages in the book to flutter out of her grasp requiring her to flip back and forth to find out where she was last reading.

I'm not certain in which thread to post this, but I think I should post this here?

Kystra is feeling very out of place. Having lived a very secluded life back at her elven town, she is now realizing that she has few useful skills to contribute in the current situation.

Kystra does have an adventurous spirit though, so she will be eager to join anyone who is patrolling or exploring the area. During her down times she will find a nice secluded spot around camp and read from the Captain's journal.

With everything that has occurred Kystra seem disinterested in determining Jask's fate. Kystra nods at Kythas comments and will hand Jask his gear if he approaches her.

Kystra will list off the items and display them.

Captain’s Cabin Loot:

* Keys (1 large brass (opened a footlocker), 1 small tarnished silver key (opened a small chest), 1 small solid black iron key
* Small chest with gold coins (over 400 gold coins)
* Leather satchel
* Several maps
* Captain’s Journal (Kystra offers to spend some time reading it).
* Bottle of Brandy (which she tries to keep away from Kythas)
* A model ship in a glass bottle (Kystra believes they could possibly use the glass bottle as a container if needed)
* Suit of Leather Armor
* Fancy Dagger
* Religious Symbol of Nethys
* Pouch of dusts and herbs
* 6 Potions Cure Light Wounds
* 1 Potion Cure Moderate Wounds
* 4 Potions Lesser Restoration
* 1 Potion of Remove Disease
* 1 Potion of Water Breathing
* 1 Potion of Water Walking

Kystra will collect all the items and will return to the beach. She will display everything to everyone letting them know what they have found. Kystra will cast Detect Magic and will try to identify the 2 potions found in the footlocker.

Spellcraft on Potion #1: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Spellcraft on Potion #2: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16

List of items found to follow, once these remaining 2 potions have been ascertained.

Kystra will look at the items found in the footlocker and try to determine their religious significance or affiliation.

Knowledge (religion) check: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15

Kystra will then return to the small chest and will see if one of the 2 small keys open it.

Kystra smiles at Ishirou and pats him on the back, "Well done friend!"

Kystra chants forth a quick incantaction and will begin gathering and examining the contents which spilled forth. Casts Detect Magic again. She hands Ishirou the big brass key, "Could you please try the on that chest over here. In the event that it does not open it, your talents may again be needed," Kystra grins.

While Ishirou starts trying to open the footlocker, Kystra will open the satchel and will also check the small chest to see if it is locked. If locked, Kystra will try to open it with either the solid black key or the tarnished silver one.

Kystra hands the journal over to Avarthiel to peruse.

Avarthiel:
Nothing of interest with regards to how we ended up here. It does appear though that the captain had an odd obsession with Ieana though. It also appears that the captain's demeanor was changing toward the last few entries.

Looking hopeful, Kystra says "Perhaps if we can find a sextant we can use it to figure out where we are with the maps."

Kystra holds up the journal and smiles, "In the very least, I have something new to read tonight."

While holding the journal, Kystra will flip to the last few entries to see if they might shed any light on the current situation.

Lastly, she will unsheath her dagger and study the locked drawer carefully. She will spend a couple minutes trying to figure out the best way to pry it open.

Take 20 on a strength check to pry open the drawer with a dagger: 22.

This sounds good. I've never been a fan of accumulating trivial experience points and its also nice to see a character gradually progress. Looking forward to using this.

Kystra nods at Avarthiel's suggestion and begins to carefully look through everything.

Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16

Kystra follows Avarthiel into the captain's quarters. Kystra will assist her in gathering up keys and anything else of use. Kystra will also cast Detect Magic to ensure they are not leaving anything important behind.

Kystra will delay her action, staying behind Dantes and moving in unison with him should he move.

Kystra will withdraw upon sight of the creatures, however she will try to keep beside the others as they withdraw, matching their pace.

Kystra tries to look around for something that is both buoyant and that could serve as a container such as a small barrel. Kystra will remove her boots and cloak. She will ensure her dagger is securely fasted to her leg and will then swim out with a steady pace.

Kystra will take 10 to swim out and hopefully aided with something buoyant.

Feeling a bond with Avarthiel and Kythas and wishing to keep them safe with her healing talents, Kystra will also volunteer to go with them.

DM Patcher || Serpent's Skull wrote:
I'm curious, how many of you are attending Gen Con this year?

My first year attending was last year. I had a great time, so I am planning to attend every second year, which means I will be going again in 2012. Its so dang expensive for me as I live in Western Canada.

Kystra nods at Kythas' suggestion and follows him back.

Whispered Elven:

Kystra places her hand on Kythas' shoulder, "Thank you for your kindness and concern."

Appearing somewhat embarrassed, Kystra goes straight to the pile of goods and begins assisting in salvaging equipment, including looking for her own gear.

Rising to a kneeling position Kystra reachous out and grabs Kythas shirt collar and shakes him slightly.

In a frustrated demeanor...

Elven:

"You don't understand! Its my... my curse. Great misfortune follows me where I go. I cannot escape it. It is like I am constantly punished and regardless of the misfortune which occurs I always survive unscathed as if to be reminded that I have little control of what happens aroud me."

Kystra sighs and looks down at the ground as she faintly considers Kythas words. "My curse has never caused anything this grandiose before. Maybe it's trying to keep me from looking into my ancestor's past? I don't know, perhaps this is too great of an event to have been caused by it -- but what if? Should I chance risking everyone's life again? I don't know."

Kystra glances into the dense foilage of jungle, listen to the many stange sounds echoing from within. She realizes that the only gear she has is a dagger. As the futility of her intended action is understood, she speaks softly, "I'm Sorry. I feel like such a fool. I just don't want to risk being the cause of anyone's harm."

Kystra just reaches the beginnings of dense jungle vegetation when she feels a slight breeze behind her, followed by a hand partially making contact with her. The push is just enough to knock her off her momentum as she tumbles forward into some leafy plants.

She looks back and sees Kythas getting up from the ground where he did a near faceplant in his dive to catch her. Kystra sits sobbing where she is.

Elven:
"Please leave me. I can't risk causing anyone anymore harm."

Whispers to Avarthiel:

"I'm not certain who to trust. I think we should be aware that whoever has orchestrated this may very well be amoungst us. Although... hrmm... no it couldn't be? Could it?"

Kystra stands up takes another look around at the carnage and at everyone around. Tears start to form in the corners of her eyes. "Noooo!" she exclaims as she brings her hands up to her face and runs off into the jungle.

Looking towards Avarthiel, "I believe I am okay. I just feel a little sick. By the looks of what happened to our ship, I guess I am feeling very well considering what the option could have been. Are you okay?"

"I am so happy to see that so many of us survived. It seems odd that none of can remember what happened after dinner. None of remember what happened to the ship, and none of us remember trying to stay afloat in the ocean or trying to rescue others. It is far beyond the possibilities of a coincidence. We have to start considering that there is something else going on here. Someone may have put us here for a reason."

Kystra sighs.

Kystra nods at the suggestion to salvage items. "Yes, we should indeed salvage all useful items. We should also consider the possibility that we might be marooned here for sometime. Hopefully there is a settlement nearby, but setting up shelter should be a priority right now. Perhaps some people should also scout out the area to assess if there are any immediate threats and to determine an optimal location to build a shelter?"

Still very disoriented, Kystra finds something fairly solid to sit down on so that she can take in a mental inventory on what has happened and what they are going to do.

"Does anyone have any idea of what happened or of where we are?"

Staring to look a little frustrated, Kystra looks down and exclaims "
Die!"

Dagger attack, flank, sickened: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2

Kystra sighs.

Kystra looks at Lilly and shakes her head, "Nasty little buggers."

Dagger attack, flank, sickened: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1

Kystra will step to a more tactical position to assist Lilly in combatting the beasts.

5-foot step to G12 to attack scorpion in F11

Dagger attack, flank, sickened: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4

As Kystra's eyes and senses have now adjusted to the situation she tries to scan around to take everything in.

Revised Round: Kystra will instead just 5' step to J11 and attack without flank for a total attack roll of 7.

I'm considering running Maure Castle on a play-by-post campaign. I've done it before, but 20 years ago — quite shocking to type that — and it ran pretty successfully for a few years, though given the limits of PBP the party still never made it to the Statuary or Kerzit, for example.

If I do it again I plan to streamline things a bit, cut down on some of the less-interesting upstairs fights to move things along more quickly, and just hand-wave level progression. Anybody ever do this with Maure? Assuming groups start at Level 12, how would you have them progress as they go through the dungeon?

I received an e-mail on June 13 saying that my order (Dungeon 147 and 148) was shipping; I haven't received it yet. Past orders seem to have arrived much more quickly. Could I get an update, please?

Some thoughts on the Greater Halls:

Fascinating stuff – love the soul demon illustration, the effects of the various portraits and the plate-armored dragon.

Even better are the revelations: “Y” grows more mysterious, which was more than a little surprising. Other initial questions (which I don’t expect answers for, btw, I’m just thinking out loud):

- Why doesn’t Malcanthet get a portrait? Y hates her, I realize, but half the subjects in the room seem to hate the other half, anyway (Orcus/Demogorgon/Grazz’t, Yeenoghu/Baphomet, etc.)
- Shad-Duan – no mention of this guy anywhere, that I can tell, though given his name and title he may have a connection with the Cult of the Long Shadow. Is he the shadow figure that was attached to the red-haired woman (Wee Jas?)
- The pit from in the Orcus-portrait vision is, presumably, Elluvia’s Pit noted in Afelbain’s diary back in #112. “Where her creatures will fly to I have no clue” – well, I guess he figured it out.
- The boy (presumably Dalt). But what’s the way he is trying to open? And who’s trying to stop him? The Elders?
- Who destroyed Dalt’s portrait?
- What’s Fraz Urb’luu’s connection here? Was he a secret patron of the Maures? Is the lost staff mentioned his? (I’m guessing not – the history doesn’t jibe, as I think his staff was lost after the Maures disappeared). Also, Shad-Duan’s portrait says the staff must be found for “your sire” to return. And Fraz is already back.
- The Elders, who I had written off as a bunch of mysterious dead guys, may still be around. And the Eye of the Elder does something besides its listed abilities.
- Who’s Ill? And why did the Maures consider her a threat?
- Kerzit gets a painting. That’s more evidence that it was no accident that Eli Tomorast was in Maure Castle with the Tome of the Black Heart. He was following a trail — but to what? He finds the book in a curio shop. It leads him to the Lost City of the Elders (I’m presuming that’s how he got there) and to Maure Castle. His journeys have also included the Forgotten Temple of T. and Rauxes (pre-calamity? Probably). What’s he after?

Lots to ponder. Can’t wait to see what happens next. My only concern is that my group will be into epic levels by the time this finishes out.

Maure Castle seems to be a bit out of date with other published rules when it comes to the relationship between Yeenoghu and the King of Ghouls.

Per Libris Mortis, the King has broken from Yeenoghu's servitude and is now an independent entity. Maure, in its description of the Scythe of Y, describes him as a servitor.

Which is fine, but since the scythe is both Intelligent and a former weapon of the King, would its alliance shift as well? Maybe not, or maybe it doesn't know about the fate of its master.

Just wondering if anybody else had looked into this and used the Y-King relationship in their campaign. Perhaps this is one of Yug-Anark's goals — to use the Scythe to rebind the King to Yeenoghu.
