Kyre made her way to the main deck just in time to hear the captain's salutation. Her own reply to his oratory was a wordless cry like ecstatic birdsong, but she never once lost sight of anyone on deck, and contrived to be close to where the captain and first mate were making their way to depart. Since the tongue of dragons seemed to be the 'intel' language on the ship, it was in that language that Kyre quietly addressed them: Nishka si demak wux usv zexenuma tenpiswo mrith wer ssifisv? Spoiler: Shall I join you or stay here with the others?

Kyre hugs Suny back fulsomely, then resumes her courteously detached posture for Krypya's benefit. It is almost jarring, as if watching two different personas collide in one person. Perhaps you can. That... person was the ships surgeon, and his being indisposed leaves the ship without a healer. In general, I think we're better off but having someone who can mend wounds and treat sickness on a daily basis might be of use. Do you know of anyone I can commend to the captain's attention? Kyre is actually thinking of nominating Kripya, but is mindful that there might be ... complications.
Female Half-elf Ranger 2/Paladin 1
Kripya, then. Some time ago, one of our crew was killed unaccountably - I don't think it was one of those undead creatures, or your assailant - he was too eager to examine the body. The marks on the body were small. Do you know of any such threat to life or limb? Have you seen anything? Heard anything? Observing Suny's wounds mending and what caused it, Kyre makes a mental note then picks up the cloak and holds it out for Suny.
Female Half-elf Ranger 2/Paladin 1
Kyre spends a few moments examining the woman with the sight Celestial Detect Evil but does not reveal what she sees by the fluttering of an eyelash. Looking over the new statue, she sheathes her sword without salute as it is covered, as if to say that this wasn't a permanent peace but only a reprieve. She doesn't leave the room, however. Please excuse me. I don't believe we have met before now, and I don't wish to be rude, but as it happens I have some questions for you, urgent ones. I am named Kyre Sannah. How shall I address you?
Female Half-elf Ranger 2/Paladin 1
Kyre is shivering - in a way this is her first true battle against evil, and it seemed to slip past with a few wild strokes. She quickly trades her spear for her sword; the spear at least she has used for hunting and defense, but the sword she has only ever trained with. Still, it seems like the right weapon for such a moment. It fits in her hand more easily now than ever... To Suny: I might be able to help, but I'll need more time than we have. Try not to get killed... Kyre is standing as close to Kai as permits him to move freely - she figures he'll be dangerously off balance when the door goes, so she'll attack directly in response to anything that endangers him
Female Half-elf Ranger 2/Paladin 1
Kyre silently slips alongside Kai and thrusts hard with her spear at the Lead undead - her logic being that it might make it easier for reinforcements to get past these creatures to whatever they are guarding. Besides, using the limb of a fallen dead is a desecration that gets Kyre especially angry. To Hit: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Regardless of whether she hit her target or not, Kyre's next attack is against the third creature - since Suny appears to be in the most danger at this moment. To Hit: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
I'm probably going to be off the boards for the next couple of hours;I almost wouldn't mind you NPCing Kyre for the next couple of rounds if you want to - she's got a battle plan.
Female Half-elf Ranger 2/Paladin 1
Kyre was distracted for a time, but the sounds of incipient combat finally made themselves clear to her. Dashing headlong with spear and shield in hand, she bursts into the far end of the battle. Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15 At this point, I'm not entirely sure of which opponent I can reach - sorry for coming in so late.
Female Half-elf Ranger 2/Paladin 1
Kyre watches the proceedings belowdecks wordlessly, her face dispassionate except when in the presence of the undead - but then her face becomes masklike, betraying no single emotion but an inner struggle. Not being knowledgeable enough to help, she permits the surgeon to take the body to his cabin - but she does turn her Celestial Sight onto the half-giants body, even as she performs the Rite of Hastened Passing (a kind of battlefield funeral ritual, similar to Kai's prayer) as it is carried past. If there is any chance of his rising as an undead or otherwise, she hopes to be forewarned... To Ieste she says If I were you, I wouldn't eat anything from this section of the ship for a bit. For all we know, it was the food that got him.
Female Half-elf Ranger 2/Paladin 1
DM willing, when Kai makes a Diplomacy check to help morale - or any other skill for that matter - Kyre will be assisting in whatever way she can. She already sees him as a natural ally. Per the rules on assistance, I'm looking for a 10 or higher on any such result to add 2 to Kai's rolls. Day one - 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16 Kyre was already awake - she had lost much of the need for sleep while keeping company with the Fey, and the disciplines of her order require a brief ritual of greeting to the dawn. Except when someone gets her attention, she often spends some time in the same position after the ritual is concluded; it is from that spot on the main deck that she hears the scream. Discerning that it comes from below, she forgoes her bow in favor of her spear as she makes for the steps belowdecks.
Female Half-elf Ranger 2/Paladin 1
I hope you will all excuse me, but I'm unclear as to what our choices are. We know that for as long as we are on these seas we are in danger of attack, and of running out of various supplies. At the moment, our morale is high for such circumstances. Is there a better heading than our present one? And unless we get a good report from our flying or swimming scouts, is there any way to be sure? Kyre seems honestly mystified, but not in any way belligerent. I believe that so far, what gods have an interest in our survival have set us on a path - let us continue to take it until we are given better signs.
Female Half-elf Ranger 2/Paladin 1
Kyre enters at a rangy lope, abruptly switching to a dignified pace when she reaches the door - her outdoor stride being the full-speed barreling that served her well in the jungles of her youth, but she does remember her manners indoors. Offering the captain a bow, she quietly takes a seat.
Female Half-elf Ranger 2/Paladin 1
Kyre keeps herself to herself for most of the activities of the ship, doing odd jobs and listening in to ongoing conversations; not contributing much, but staying visible and trying to ensure that if she needs to say something everyone will hear. She doesn't partake of the grog herself, but lets it be known that this is her personal decision and not a general principle. Smupeap's comment is the opportunity she was looking for, without actually hoping for. She deliberately takes a step away from Smupeap so that she will have an excuse to pitch her voice loudly, so that everyone can hear that wants to: "Sir, I must take issue with that. The world of our birth has ended. It's end is written on the face of yonder red sun, if you can squint enough to see. But we have not ended yet. We still have our lives and our honor. We still have hope! And our best hope lies in this - to cling to our integrity, to treat each other with charity, and to remember our piety! Yes, even in the silence of the divine! For the divine surely remembers us! Here is my proof - bring me a bailing bucket of the ocean's water." As she waits for that, she pulls she pulls an amulet of dull metal shaped like a gem, with an actual gem at it's tip, over her head and cups it in her hands, murmuring to it, then passing it over the bucket. Putting the amulet back around her neck, she takes the bucket and drinks from it, fulsomely. Then she hands it to Smupeap, wordlessly but with a smile. Spoiler:
Kyre knows someone is going to get terribly pessimistic about their situation; this is her effort to counteract any spirit of fatalism among the crew. Routine complaints don't concern her, but she decided to respond as sweepingly as possible to anything that could take the spirit out of the entire crew. I'm presuming this is Diplomacy check, I don't know what the situational mods are. She is using one of the 3 daily castings of Purify Food & Water from her amulet, so she is specifically using it on a larger than usual bucket, to make the point and contribute some useable water.
If Kai is present, she will then say to him in a quieter voice - "That is part of the nature of a paladin. Integrity, charity and piety. The three virtues recognized by every order."
Female Half-elf Ranger 2/Paladin 1
Two clarifications I think I should make - first, Kyre will stand by the captain for as long as he holds the post. This reflects my belief that if Kyre and Avion - or Kyre and anyone else, for that matter - ever come to blows, it should be a moment of high drama, not 'I'm not playing with your undead! They stink and have cooties!' Also, I'm glad we've got some players with a heavy investment of time for this game, but bear in mind that I'm only going to be checking the thread once or twice a day, and might not even post every time. Consequently, there may wind up being some serious retconning on my part. Sorry if it gets confusing.
Female Half-elf Ranger 2/Paladin 1
Openly: Very well then. As the captain has commanded, I shall do. And with that she returns her spear to it's proper place, murmuring to Vulpa:
Thank you. Remember this moment. Despite the captain's orders, I fear this issue is not concluded, but only postponed. [ooc]This is whispered in similar tones to Vulpa's.[ooc] Kyre then crosses to Avion, addressing him conversationally - "If you recall, I refrained from casting aspersions on your character, sir. I will even go as far as thanking you for ending the immediate threat to our lives. I only wanted to make sure that no one confused the immediate threat with the continuing threat." This last sentence is spoken with her eyes fixed on the surgeon's face. Her hands are nowhere near her weapons, and she doesn't look angry, but her eyes are wide and watchful. She stands thus long enough for the implication to be clear, then with a courteous nod she turns to go.
Female Half-elf Ranger 2/Paladin 1
"Space? SPACE? Is that our primary concern, Captain?" Kyre is clearly in a temper fast approaching livid, but striving to control herself. "I do not see these 'extra hands' being any use to the health or the sanity of our crew, sir. Right now, the only thing keeping their murderous intentions in check is the whim of a man who has plainly allied himself with the patron of murder himself! Lest we forget, the first we knew of them was an unprovoked attack! Without even casting aspersions on our ship's surgeon, I can tell you that for as long as such abominations are permitted on this ship, our safety will depend on redoubling our watch - so that we can keep an eye out for threats from off the ship and on it!" In the course of this tirade, pitched so that the entire ship can hear it, Kyre is taking a position amidships, and swapping out her bow for her shield and spear...
Female Half-elf Ranger 2/Paladin 1
Kyre says nothing - her bow will say all she needs. Her priority is to try to keep her shipmates safe; the creature menacing Nerine caught her eye. She sighted and let fly a normal arrow... To hit:1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Spoiler: I'm presuming the one Nerine is fighting is within range; the notes on Nerine's position are a little confusing. But if I have to pick a different target, those are the numbers I'm using for now.
Female Half-elf Ranger 2/Paladin 1
Kyre finds herself torn - the Quartermaster stands ready to battle any incipient stormfire, so she dismisses that as not her concern. But there are still chunks of debris falling from the sky, and now creatures emerging from the depths. She shouts a warning of whatever boulders' course she can see, then abandons the post of spotter. Heading to a post amidships, she readies her bow and calls, "Prepare to repel boarders!" In game terms: Kyre combines a move action with a draw weapon - she can do that, given that her attack bonus is +3. Sounding an alarm is a free action. This sets her up for the beginning of round 3 on the main deck, near the mainmast and the quarterdeck. Should I be rolling for initiative, Will, or are you doing that?
Female Half-elf Ranger 2/Paladin 1
I hate to say this, but I - the player - have no actual idea what Stormfire is. I just googled it, and got nothing useful. (Unless a P-106 from the Star Wars universe is shooting at us...) So what exactly is stormfire, and what do we do to keep it from 'outbreaking'? I've got some clues from Willpower's narration, but it's clear that I personally have rolled a 2 on my Knowledge-Forgotten Realms Nature check...
Female Half-elf Ranger 2/Paladin 1
[ooc]Fear check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Something I, the player, missed:
I completely missed rolling the round 1 balance check, and I'm not sure what to do about that. Obviously I'm a bit late for the 'flurry of posts' ... do I need to roll again, or what? Just in case, I wrote the actions I'm taking if the previous round is uneventful... Coiling her arm through the rigging to help keep herself secure, Kyre clings to her post and continues to scan the skies, this time with her eyes and her ears. Any sound not connected with the descending boulders flickers into her awareness without making any impression, but the eerie green glow in the upper rigging makes the corner of her mouth twitch in recognition...
Female Half-elf Ranger 2/Paladin 1
Will save vs Fear: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16 Kyre looks as if awestruck up at the tumult in the skies, murmuring We didn't escape. The end of all things followed us here. But then she shakes her head as if to clear it, and says in a voice clearer and stronger than any she's been heard speaking with before Looks like we have another chance to save the world! Kyre hastens to the side of the ship, ascends the rigging just enough to get a clear view, then turns her fey-blessed eyes upward to try to help the others find the safe course. Spot check, +ranks, WIS bonus and racial bonus: 1d20 + 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 + 2 + 1 = 18
Female Half-elf Ranger 2/Paladin 1
Kyre jumps, as if the botanist's reassurance was startling, before resuming her habitual courtesy. Thank you, Master Olek. But I'll be all right, I think. Just getting a little distracted. Tell me, do you see something in that red sun? The second one? It's... there's something to it. Something I scarcely credit my senses with.

What's that, Set Your Controls For The Heart Of The Sun? And yes, I had planned to. I don't think any of the avatars available fit my char, and I can't find easy instructions for loading my own, even if I had an image that was suitable. So I just made the ring part of my character. And my most recent post, everyone, is not intended as a crisis point - a passerby saving Kyre might be useful conversation starter, but if no-one cares to go with that she'll recover herself. ...and on an entirely different, technical note - why will the boards not take my Kyre Sannah alias as my default alias? Every time I'm on I set Kyre as the default, and each time a log back in it's been reset as Justiciar Te.
Female Half-elf Ranger 2/Paladin 1
Kyre has been on board long enough to be useful, so she makes herself as useful as she can in following the captain's orders, but in her case it's somewhat absent-minded. In spite of Suny's exhortations, she gives the greater part of her thought to the skies. Cudgeling her brain, she tries to recollect everything her teachers - mortal and fae - taught her about the primacy of the sun, and what another might mean. Knowledge: Nature check - 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20 And from time to time, she closes her eyes and directs her innermost attention skyward. It was given to her, this sense, to tell her when creatures of wicked intention were near, and she had no reason to believe that a celestial body would be within it's reach, but she opened herself to it anyhow; she could not know if it were futile until she tried...
Female Half-elf Ranger 2/Paladin 1
A bit lower than Suny, Kyre had already packed away her own hammock for the day. Some had observed that it was pointless; she was going to put it up again in exactly the same spot to sleep, but she couldn't help it. She was a refugee, a guest of the ship, and she felt the constant impulse to be courteous to the ship and it's captain. The courtesy was not merely for their benefit. Courtesy required discipline, and she felt the necessity to remain disciplined in the presence of her new companions. There were some who had striven mightily merely to protect natural life against constant violations of nature. There were some who had no such might; and there were others who but for happenstance might have given their loyalties to the invaders. The time might very well come when Kyre Sannah's discipline might the the only thing standing between these last two. For now, Kyre merely took up as little deck space as she could, caring for her 'armor' and watching the horizon...

I'm still here, for the record. Just trying to figure out exactly what changes need to be made to my backstory; might just omit it and RP the details - we've come a long way, baby. Also, I was just looking over the live thread and the time of day wasn't mentioned. Is it morning? Early? and what are the skies like? I presume there is a sun, and that there is a day/night interval of about 24 hours - is there a moon? more than one? A ring? constellations? For that matter, are there clouds? And are they the 'normal' type, or something else? ...I kind of imagine the scene at the end of The Quiet Earth... I don't mean to be a pest, but this is the kind of thing I think about. In my old campaign setting, the first thing I established was that the skies are inhabited, at every level. The Cloud Giants who rode atop the Unshaded Islands were a constant presence, some of the other planets were plainly visible, and the night sky was dominated by a nebula that took the shape of a titanic dragon with a star between it's teeth.
I admit, I've missed a few details myself; this is the first chance I've had to sit down and really read through the other characters' descriptions/contributions. Ok, I'll stick with my original idea. And yes, I'm still throwing in 1k gold for the ship's fund. I've picked a favored enemy, btw, and am starting to seriously allocate equipment. Should have the finishing touches by ... well, by the time serious play starts. Edit: Willpower, I'm not completely ignoring the Feytouched template and other options you presented, but I'm sticking with the basic concept of 'half-elf with unusual origins' for now. 2 reasons - first, I have a feeling that, especially with a group this large, simplicity will work best; second, the half-elf traits are as strong as I think they should go. Thanks anyway.
Well, I started building my character somewhat before other chimed in - I now find that I am a lone LG Paladin on a genuine pirate ship. Is this going to be a problem? If it is, then Willpower, it becomes even more urgent that I get some feedback on what favored enemy would be best. I can go full ranger rather than ranger/paladin, but that would mean that the ranger traits and equipment would need careful detailing. My contribution to the ship's stores remains - call it assorted timber and leathers (whatever ship picked Kyre up would have had an entire island of resources to gather. On the other hand, there is ample reason to believe that an island that could keep one human girl alive couldn't manage more without faerie magic, hence it not being suitable for settling.)
Finally, I have a character with some details. Sir Koan De'Wynter, you in particular may want to check my background - it might intersect with yours in interesting ways... Willpower, I haven't nailed down my Favored Enemy yet because I'd like your advice. If you give me no clues at all, then I'll simply go with Animal or Magical Beast - either one will fit the background. On the other hand, it would be consistent for the fey who raised Kyre to train her in battling something they foresaw her fighting in the future... As for money, I'm going for an extremely gear-light character, so -
