Background:
Kuwal is a child of a Tien mother and a Varisian father; not surprisingly he grew up on the road. Perpetually moving from place to place and country to country - not out of fear or need, but purely due to the restlessness of his father. His Tien heritage was encouraged by his mother, who offered what little stability and certainty he knew as a kid. From his father he inherited the need to drown his thoughts and emotions in alcohol; while from his mother he inherited a moral compass and the strict rituals that evolved into his capabilities as a monk.
After he set out to make his own life at the age of 20, Kuwal has not seen his parents in 5 years - nor does he know where he can find them. He occasionally yearns for his mother, which can lead him to liquor; in turn he becomes disgusted at himself at the memories of his father. On balance he feels the need to honor his mother in thought and action.
Personality:
Kuwal has spent a fair portion of his life in regions across Golarion - he's picked up proficiency in three languages along the way - but at the same time his fluency in his mother's tongue, Tien, dominates; whereas his mastery in Taldane and Varisian is lackluster. Coupled with a slightly unkempt presentation and frequently a dunst of cheap ale, he's not having an easy time in the Inner Sea (his current location).
His heart, though, is in the right place and there's a certain warmth to him that is easy to overlook. He can be surprisingly curteous, thorough, and applies a discipline to himself that is uncommon to the average man.
