I understand. It can be a challenge keeping RL and games managed.

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Arrr? Arrrr!!!

Yep RL really screws with things sometimes. Sounds like you got your head above water again though. Good to have you back.

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Yaaarrrrr!!!

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Still Christmas! Just remember, there are 12 days...so we have 6 more to go.

Happy new years! Cheers! *clink*

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

So I am traveling to Okinawa for 1 day. So I will be off the internet for the next four days as I lose time with all the travel.

Yay.

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Happy Holidays!!

How much were the sails? Ko'ulu could buy them next time we stop by...I mean, he clanks when he walks right now...

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Ko'ulu falls over the side of the ship and is pulled to the bottom by his weighty sacks of gold.

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Looks like Jirobo got all the rolls right. He only needed a 10 for aid another.

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Ko'ulu grins as Jirobo's call rings out over the ship. "Its finally time to test the strength of our arms..." Ko'ulu says as he goes over and unlocks the weapons chest. "Come and get your tools!" Ko'ulu bellows.

"Snipers get up in the rigging. Look for the captain, officers or anyone who looks like they know how to pilot the ship and put a yard of wood through them. The rest of you, lets get the grapples and ropes ready."

Now if Callum does his work well...we will get close soon...

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Ko'ulu is unusually silent as the crew is rowed out to the Black Queen but seeing as he is grinning from ear to ear, it is highly unlikely he is anything but ecstatic over the condition of the ship. He spends some time looking over the changes before nodding to himself and joining the rest of the crew getting the Black Queen shipshape for the voyage.

After a while it seems that Ko'ulu's lurking presence is everywhere. The moment that any of the crew slow down Ko'ulu is there. At the summons of one of the other officers Ko'ulu puts his strength to good use moving heavy stores and helping Tullyman get them settled in the hold.

At Callum's words he breaks his silence. "No. They know how to brawl. They don't know how to fight. Sailors are not warriors, they fight one on one, undisciplined, like a mob. They need to learn to fight like warriors, like brothers and sisters who work together so well that they fight as a team. We can get like that, but it will take time and drills. Many many drills" he says, grinning with a tigerish smile, foretelling many days of punishing combat drill.

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

"Let's get the wounded off the beach and into the shade somewhere. That way they can get patched up safely...then we need to celebrate!" , Ko'ulu says, grinning.

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Ko'ulu grins at Jirobo, "Don't worry Birdy, Ko'ulu is going to be just fine. The fish didn't even scratch me that much...wounds always look worse in the water when they are freely bleeding. If you get magic tomorrow for me, that is good enough." he says as he claps Jirobo on the side. He walks over to where Tylos is looking at the beast in time to hear his comments.

"Its smart? A smart fish? So Tylos, does it have a lair? Is it a solitary hunter or are there more of these things out there?" he asks. "If there are more, we will have to find and hunt them down...You know, I wonder...does it keep treasures somewhere?"

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Ko'ulu sees the snake suddenly stop moving after Tullyman screams at the creature, and he eyes it warily for a moment before realizing that he can see small twitches as it floats.

Its not dead! he thinks as he lunges at it once more.

Swim 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30
Dagger 1d20 + 8 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 8 + 2 + 1 = 20
Dagger damage 1d4 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 4 + 1 = 7

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

The false snake vanishes as Ko'ulu's dagger pierces it leaving no snakes before him. Confusedly looking for a new threat, he starts to turn back, just in time to have the snake bite deeply into his shoulder sending a spear of pain through him. He thumps the creature in its face feebly, but it seems to drive the creature off for the moment as it swims a few feet back and seems to ready itself for another strike.

Arm is on fire...poison? Gotta end this quickly...

Swim 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26
Dagger 1d20 + 8 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 8 + 2 + 1 = 12
Dagger damage 1d4 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 4 + 1 = 7

stupid stupid dice

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Ko'ulu's dagger plunges into the snake, passing straight through it and causing Ko'ulu to unbalance in the water for a moment. Suddenly there are a lot fewer snakes left to attack, but he has little time to wonder at this oddity, and stabs out at the nearest snake.

I hope that this one doesn't dissolve like a bit of sea foam!

Swim 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21
Dagger 1d20 + 8 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 8 + 2 + 1 = 22

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Intelligence, to notice that they are illusions 1d20 ⇒ 16

The water suddenly boils with serpents and Ko'ulu grimaces.

This is bad! They must have been hiding in the mud, waiting to trap us!

Seeing litle alternative, and no escape, Ko'ulu lashes out with his dagger at the closest snake.

Swim 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13
Stab stab with the dagger 1d20 + 8 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 8 + 2 + 1 = 17
Dagger 1d4 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 1 = 8
Kill snake number 1d7 ⇒ 4

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Ko'ulu starts grinning when he sees Callum move in the water and box the creature in.

Filthy fish is going to be floating belly up soon enough! he thinks as he surfaces for a breath, dodges the tail of the beast and dives back at the creature, stabbing at its coils.

Swim 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28
Stab stab with the dagger 1d20 + 8 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 8 + 2 + 1 = 19
Dagger 1d4 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 4 + 1 = 7

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Ko'ulu barely even registers the shape of the creature as he surges into the water. To him, its just another creature of the deeps, come to attack his companions and the town. He pulls his dagger from its sheath and dives after the creature, swimming towards it swiftly.

Ko'ulu swims out into deeper water to get around Xanxan and trap the critter against the shore.

Swim 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11
Stab stab with the dagger 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13
Dagger dmg 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Ko'ulu tosses the pole aside and runs toward the commotion. As he runs, he glances to the side, watching the water for any further disturbances.

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

After wandering through the market, Koulu makes his way down to the edge of the inlet where the ship is docked. He pushes his way through reeds and brush until his feet begin to squish in the brackish water. After a few minutes of wandering through the green vegetation, plants towering around and above him, he finds a few reeds that look to be about the same length and cuts them then spends a few minutes binding them together into a strong fishing pole.

Then Ko'ulu wanders down the inlet, looking for a likely place to fish and keeping an eye on the activity on the ship.

I lost one boat, I am not going to lose another so easily...

Finally finding a sandy shallow spot where he can stand and cast, Ko'ulu pulls his line and hooks out of his pack, baits it with a bit of old fish then settles into the easy rythmn of casting and winding in his line.

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Arrrr!

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

The trick with the cutlasses is that they are next to worthless underwater. (-2 to hit and max of half damage!) Slashing weapons take a penalty vs. piercing weapons do not (see Ko'ulu with a trident and dagger). I imagine that as the adventures progress that we will be dealing with threats both in and out of the water, so we should have our crew equipped to deal with either.

I do like the idea of the boarding pikes though. Good catch, those will be pretty good for any fights.

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

So what do you think?

10 light crossbows (350)
20 short spears (20)
20 short sword (200)
10 leather armor (100) for the boarding parties

670gp.

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

I guess a good inventory of what all the other pirates have is in order. Should I assume that all the named pirates have proper equipment and we only need to worry about new crew?

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Ko'ulu mulls over Callum's words for a few moments.

"I don't think that we have enough...and they are the wrong sort. I want to get short blades and crossbows. Both are easy to train and use. And the short blades are good for using underwater because you stab with them, not just slashing, like the cutlasses that stupid pirates like."

"Small wooden shields would be good too. Cheap, so they can be dropped overboard or lost, and nobody will be crying."

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

"It is good to be on land once more. I love the sea as much as the next man, but we have been out of sight of land too long." Ko'ulu says with a broad grin as he stretches out arms wide, his chain shirt clinking.

Ko'ulu wanders over to where Ricky is talking to his craftsmen, and pushes through the crowd.

"Ricky Squibs, I am going to need weapons. Both for training and for drawing blood. Do you know a good place to get these?" he asks, smiling.

So what is the end result for how much gold we have for shopping?

I want to get a trident +1 if I have the cash for it.

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Lets push the utility items for the ship. If we can outsail them, we can board, or evade at will.

We are going to need money to hire crew as well, I can't imagine that we won't have to spend some cash to get people interested.

I like Black Queen's Mercy its kinda a double meaning.

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Meh. Just dump Tate on the dock with nothing but a pair of britches and be done with him. If he survives, fine, if he dies or gets made a slave, that is someone else's problem.

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Ping!

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Ko'ulu sits back on his haunches to listen as Tully starts speechifying.

"Woooo! Plunder!", Ko'ulu shouts, cheering on Tully excitedly, thumping the holystone on the deck.

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Ko'ulu can go wherever he is required. Don't forget that he is a good sailor as well. So he can fill in at the wheel, in the rigging or wherever he needs to be to spell someone.

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Ko'ulu looks at the bespoiled deck and sighs. "How much time do we have before we get to Bloodcove? If we take the time to change the look of the ship, even Harrigan won't know what to look for. I like "The Nightmare" though." he says as he goes looking for gear to clean down the deck before the blood dries into the wood.

"I don't know about this Co-captain thing. I never heard about any ship working by committee. I guess we can try it though."

Ko'ulu is going to start working on cleaning up the top of the ship, sticky blood on the deck is gross in bare feet.

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Good grief, this is what I get for posting in the morning.

Probably not the most fortuitous of names..."The Nightmare" might end up being ours...and why would you want a horse on the ocean anyways...

Do we have a list of "must fill" positions for the ship?

Ko'ulu should fill the role of master at arms at a minimum. I am building him to be an intimidating fighter. Since you guys have been focusing on building characters to steer the ship, I figured we should have someone who can put down a threat (hard) when it arises.

Seeing Jirobo start to minister to the bleeding Plugg Ko'ulu growls at him, grabs the naked man by the arms and slings him over the railing.

Strength 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14

After Xanxan performs his tender ministrations on Scourge, he smiles and nods, a hand going unconciously to scratch the scars on his back. He helps Xanxan roll Scourge to the edge of the ship then stands back as the gnome sends the piece of filth to watery justice.

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

"Birdy is right, they is cut up. Dump them over and let the sea sort them out." Ko'ulu says, pointing over the railing.

"If they survive, then it wasn't their time yet."

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Ko'ulu nods his head at Xanxan and strips Plugg of everything, clothes, rings, earrings, weapons and piles them on the deck.

"You are bleeding all over the fancy clothes you gutless turd. Don't worry though, the sharks will take care of your wounds soon enough." Ko'ulu says, roughly handling the man.

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Seeing Tate slump to the deck, Ko'ulu whips back around to face Plugg. "Looks like you are using up your friends real quicklike. You gonna be out soon Plugg, then we chop you up and feed you back to your fishy friends." he growls.

Trident, inspired, power 1d20 + 1 + 8 - 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 + 8 - 1 = 18

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Can't see the map at work. I am going to assume I am not flanked and I don't have the ability to flank anyone at this point, so I won't move.

Ko'ulu's feet pad on the wooden deck as he dodges and weaves past the slashing blades. Tate's attack whistles past his head and Ko'ulu recognizes the threat from his former shipmate, plants his foot and spins, slamming the trident towards Tate's chest.

Trident, inspired, power 1d20 + 1 + 8 - 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 + 8 - 1 = 26
Trident, damage 1d8 + 4 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 4 + 1 + 2 = 8

Tate senses the blow and flails about with his blade, barely turning the deadly attack from impaling him on the chest but not avoiding one of the tines that slashes across his face, opening a wound from his cheek to above his ear.

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Slash, stab, poke poke.

I saw a wiggle! Its alive!

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Seeing Callum's misfortune Ko'ulu growls and lunges at Plugg, trident weaving like an adder and striking at the villian with short jabs, slowly driving him against the railing.

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

As Ko'ulu comes onto deck and sees Plug, Scourge and Tate waiting, he grins.

"Plug! I have been waiting for this for a long time. But since we don't have any rum to pickle your sour face in, I will just have to settle for spitting you like the pig you are." Ko'ulu says as he pads forward to Callum's defense, lunging forward with the trident in an effort to spit the Bosun, his chainmail jingling quietly as he moves.

Male Fisherman 4, Hp: 31/31, AC 17, T:12, FF:15, F+3, R+0, W+1

Seeing Tully's eyes on him, Ko'ulu grins, his smile a flash of white in the gloom, then mimics stabbing Jape, enjoying the blanch on Tully's face.

Bare feet silent on the wooden deck, his chainmail jingling slightly with the motion of the ship, Ko'ulu passes the trident to his off hand, then rears back and punches Jape square on the temple.

And that ladies and gentleman, is why every fighter should take improved unarmed combat.

As Kroop moves away, Ko'ulu grunts.

"I have said my piece. I am still waiting for the wind to change on this ship."

Ko'ulu claps his hands together and stands up.

"Tully-man, tell me if you notice any weather change." he says as he walks away.
