Appearance, Personality, and Background:

Appearance:
A frequent first reaction to sighting Kjell is "I didn't know Dwarves came that big!". Kjell is a veritable mountain of a man, nearly as broad as he is tall, topped with an unruly mass of pale blonde hair and beard. Two icy blue eyes peer out from the spiderweb of laugh lines that crease his face. His most common mode of dress is a shirt of fine chainmail worn over soft leathers and furs, and he is rarely far from his massive double-bladed axe -- or his strange Eidolon companion, Neifelbjorn.

Personality:
Kjell is a jovial fellow, quick with a wisecrack or joke to defuse a tense situation or help relax after a battle. Unfortunately, his sense of humor is ... unique ... and not always appropriate to the situation. Kjell is driven by the horrors he's seen in his past to do what he can to oppose evil and suffering in the world and rarely lets the chance to help someone in need pass him by. He is more than a little impulsive and Neifelbjorn has taken to swatting him over the head none-too-gently when his enthusiasm gets away with him.

Background:
Kjell led a fairly unremarkable life for a youth of his size in the Land of the Linnorm Kings, until he decided that he needed an adventure to make a name for himself and signed up as the bodyguard to a Chelaxian merchant-prince.
For five long years, Kjell was witness to the horrors Lord Marcellano Jeggare visited upon his subjects, his business rivals, and his enemies. Kjell saw first-hand the power and cruelty of Hell when Marcellano's "pet" ice devil was given the "gift" of a cook who had burned Marcellano's dinner. The poor man's torment lasted for more than three days.
Kjell was saved from his servitude and gained his Summoner powers at the same moment. Late one evening, Lord Marcellano, Kjell, and Marcellano's top wizard were in the sealed Summoning Room to make a pact with a new devil. Unknown to Kjell or Marcellano, however, the wizard had been making deals of his own on the side, and the devil he summoned was already bound to the wizard, who then ordered it to kill the Lord. Bound by duty, Kjell stepped in front of his master -- and was saved as a strange icy bear-like creature barreled out of the closing portal and set to savaging the devil. The fight lasted for nearly 10 minutes, and at the end both the Lord and the wizard were dead, but Neifelbjorn and Kjell both survived.
Knowing that he would be blamed for his master's death and executed slowly and publically, Kjell escaped away from Cheliax with Neifelbjorn at his heels. At first, Kjell hardly trusted the Eidolon, but over time they have become inseparable companions, truly two halves of the same soul.
