Members of the Vanti family are like many Duros, great starfarers and wanderers, always ready to travel to remote corners of the space lanes. Only part of the wandering is born from curiosity however - much of these travels arise out of sheer need, for the planet Duros is a dark and wounded place no longer fit to call home. Six years ago it was bombed by the invading Confederacy of Independent Systems, its surface devastated and rendered poisonous. Although the clone wars came to a close not long after, more tragedy has followed. The Empire is ascending, and as it does non-human species are being relegated to second-class citizen status. Many Duros, the Vanti family included, have been displaced from their orbiting homes to the world of Corellia or even the space lanes. It has frequently been termed "eminent domain" or "public good" - the Moffs say that the planet Duro's resources are needed to help rebuild after the war. Kir and his family know the Empire's acts for what they are - naked grabs for power and blatant examples of speciesism.
Kir has grown up during these times of change; as he came of age he saw his parents forced from their home and joined them as they sold their services on various tramp freighters. He is typical of the Duros in some ways - a head for hysperspace calculations and piloting, a skilled hand at starship maintenance, and love of exploration. Unlike most Duros, however, the need to survive has taught him a great deal of business acumen, common sense and well timed deception - he is keenly aware of the opportunity to be had in most situations, and eager to turn a bad situation to his advantage. Survival and personal comfort are problems to be solved and goals to be reached - and Kir prides himself as a problem solver.
It may be that some of his practical sensibilities come from his great-great grandfather, who was rumored to be Neimoidian. The family tries to hush up the fact, as such heritage is quite scandalous in Duros' circles, but Kir takes a certain pride in the possibility, having even gone so far as to learn their tongue Pak Pak (often called Neimoidian).
His parents have recently taken up work on a Core freighter as stewards, a job which simply bores the bright young Duros. With his tool kit, blaster and a piece of his mother's birthing egg to remember them by, he has set off on his own to make wander among the beautiful stars.
