In it's place, charging out of the darkness, was a wild thing, loose and free, moving with a kind of jester's spring and the effortless threat of a prowling cat.
Dressed all in black save for his grinning, white, featureless face, the shadowy hero that would become known as Killjoy made his debut in Westcrown.
Not today, fancy pants!" his manic voice echoed from behind his mask.
He didn't so much attack the robed man as he did crash into him like a catapult stone, cross-checking him with his simple club.
Stealth (to not be noticed until I have a good charge lane. Hopefully I can cath him flat footed):1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
I actually meant to have my background updated when I came up with my NPC idea, but the holidays reared their ugly head. I'll have that taken care of soon.
I think dear old dad was Order of the Rack. That fits well.
The name Killjoy is not necessarily set in stone. I just thought it was a decent name for a fantasy superhero with a violent but comedic sense of style. His actual name is Cillian Castilian. I have a separate alias for that side of the character.
My father, Hargrave Castilain, former captain of the Hellknights. Now in prison for crimes he did not commit.
Hargrave represents an older order of Hellknight, before they decided that the ends justified the means and that pursuing justice was more important than protecting people.
He may have been the last thing saving the order from becoming everything they profess to hate.
It was Hargrave who first planted the idea of Killjoy in his son's mind. Cillian visits the prison once a month. Much is left unsaid, but both of them understand.
Hargrave spent 30 years as a Hellknight. He knows them inside and out, personally and philosophically. He also knows the political elite and most of the city's power players, and knows much about the syndicates. He is a near-bottomless well of information on Westcrown, but it is all at least two years outdated at this point, and requires going into the most securely guarded area of the city to ask anything.
I was one of the players in the group with Shannon. My concept is a little odd, but it seemed to really work well in the other game so I was hoping to reprise it.
Mechanically, I'm a pretty simple and straightforward dex-fighter.
Thematically, I'm a masked vigilante out to right the wrongs of the city. Think a combination of Batman and the Joker and you'll have a pretty good idea of Killjoy's style and of his morality.
Let me know if you have any questions about how the idea works.
The trap rules state anyone in the same square as the trap triggers it and takes the effect. (In this case, an attack with a +10 bonus). I'm basically just putting it in the same square as them, in a rather cartoony way that will hopefully result in uncartoony violence.
I could have just slid it under his feet, but I figured a touch attack was funnier and more realistic.
Sorry to slow things down. I realize this is pretty unorthodox.
Nope, never seen it. I just came across the bear trap stats and thought "That would make a darn good weapon to just hit people with at low levels", and a while later made this character and realized it fit his warped sense of humor.
A rich and mocking laugh echoed down the hallway. "Did someone call for a scourging?"
The blur of a cloak that seemed like it was cut into a mass of writhing ribbons whipped behind the smirking white-masked figure that barelled down the hallway, nimbly dodging the ragtag group facing off against the Hellknights.
"You knighty-knights have no manners. Throwing a party and not inviting me?"
"But I'm not mad! I still brought you party favors!" the amused and manic voice said as he approached the knight moving in on the child and the horned mage.
From beneath the rippling ribbons a twisted maw of metal teeth emerged, like the masked man was carrying some monster's grinning mouth.
"For you!"
Charge to K8, Touch Attack to H5 with Last Laugh:1d20 + 2 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 2 + 1 + 1 = 20 Last Laugh, discharging if touch attack is successful:1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24 Damage:2d6 + 3 ⇒ (3, 1) + 3 = 7
"I know, I shouldn't have. You're just that special to me!"

Quentin, since you didn't take a move action, can I request that you 5' adjust. I want to end up where you are.
I'm delaying my action until Q acts.
actions:
A black cloaked figure with a smirking white mask comes barreling down the corridor nimbly moving past the group and launching a spinning projectile through the air at the closest hellknight recruit.
I find that the only significant difference between point buys is that at lower point value, you see more single-attribute classes (barbarian, sorcerer, wizard), and at higher point buy you see more multi-attribute classes (paladin, monk) and more multi-classing.
The minimums and maximums of primary stats are still the same, the supporting attributes are just able to reach more significant levels, which adds more build options.
Sigh. Just realized I'm built on a 20 point buy (killjoy was originally built for another game and I didn't think to check when I resubmitted him here) I'm going to have to overhaul my numbers.
Man, multiple attribute dependent characters are awful on 15 points.
Yeah, definitely. We've probably heard stories of each-other's masked exploits from the thugs we go after, but don't realize vigilantism runs in the family.
I'm pretty much ready to go, I just need to work out equipment and pick another trait.
Jelani and I were discussing linking our characters thematically in the recruitment thread. Right now our idea was to be masked vigilante crime-fighters, complete with alter egos and such (not like over the top superheroes, more gritty/real like V for Vendetta or Batman)
Anyone feel like joining our little justice league?
Killarny Johnson was the son of the Captain of the Guard. With no mother and a workaholic father he split his time between the streets and the guard barracks, occasionally being forced to go to social gatherings with the nobles his father served.
The city slowly declined and his father refused to bow to the syndicates, slowly becoming the last honest cop around. Predictably, it cost him his life.
Killarny is now out for blood. He is clever, resourceful, dangerous and driven by both a desire for revenge and a deeply ingrained sense of right and wrong. He understands that as just one man there isn't a lot he can do, but a good trick can fool a lot of people. The best tricks practically create their own truths.
So he's looking to con the city back into some sense of goodness, and kill anyone who doesn't want to be part of the joke.
Appearance::
Killjoy is a wiry figure in close-fitting black armor dotted with weapons and pouches, wearing a white mask with a jaunty grin.
Killarny is a clean shaven young man with close-cropped hair standing about 5'10'. His eyes are a clear blue and his face is almost perpetually serious.
It's clear he's lived a hard life. His nose has been broken more than once, but he was lucky enough to be able to have it straightened. Small scars dot his face and scalp.
He carries no obvious weapons and dresses in simple but well made clothes. Everything about him seems unremarkable. He'd probably be just another face in the crowd to most people, but if you happen to catch his eye you might notice a manic gleam that is deeply unsettling.
Also, take a look at your in game post. Notice the Edit feature on the right. It locks after an hour, but before that you can make any rewrites you like.
As I reach the top of the stairs I see many persons who are height challenged: too tall.
I am Kaleb does anyone know what is going on?
Kaleb, it looks like everyone's sort of naturally slipped into a Third Person posting format (you might notice it reads like a novel).
Your first post was in First Person format. There's nothing wrong with that, but it is a bit jarring to be reading along and find a new posting format every few posts.
Try writing things like a novel. It'll help your posts mesh with ours.
The man who walked in next was dressed from neck to toe in dark leathers and silks. Apparently he really liked blacks and greys. His hood was down and a scarf draped about his neck. Straps and pouches dotted his outfit and a hiltless, slightly curved sword was sheathed upside-down on his back, the grip neatly tucked at his right hip. His hair was cut very close to his scalp, a few days growth of beard lined his face. He had a serious look, but an easy smile as well. He nodded to Groden, found a place against the wall and leaned back to wait and watch.
Basically, it's the instructions to what to type in the text box to make your post look the way you want it to.
The things put in the brackets are instructions to the computer to make the next text look a certain way (ooc brackets make your text blue, for example)
Also, familiarize yourself with the coding formats in the spoiler beneath the reply box. Use the Discussion thread here to try things out. Feel free to ask questions, there's a few veterans here who I'm sure are willing to help.
GM, I still feel like I have only a vague idea of my character's place in the setting. I'm fine jumping in and winging it, but any information you want to provide would be very helpful.
If there's no maps I request detailed descriptions of surroundings and where people are in relation to what. I find that detailed maps aren't really necessary, but they really help with the initial set up and figuring out what's going on.
Tarkish, I'm going to try to be gentle here, but I'm not sure I can and still get across what I need to convey.
Play By Post games are about writing. Lots and lots of writing. It doesn't matter how creative and interested you are if you don't have the writing skills to present your ideas.
I'm sure if this were a regular tabletop game it wouldn't be a problem that you have a hard time with spelling and grammar, but in this format, that's all we get to see.
You might not feel it's fair to say no to you just because you can't write well, but it would also not be fair to the other ten of us to have to play with someone who simply can't play the game at the same level we can. People who haven't finished growing don't make it onto NBA teams. It doesn't mean they can't enjoy basketball, it just means that when coaches make their picks, they pick people based on what they can do right now, not what they might be able to do someday.
So my advice to you is to practice. Take English classes and pay attention. Write on your own and let other people critique it.
Then come back here and present yourself to these forums again. I bet things go better for you.
I don't have enough information about your setting to really tie my character to it. Can you give me a breif summery of which of the "black ten" I'm related to, and what that means? Also, regarding your spoiler in the other thread-
Spoiler:
I can easily see Killjoy working for either organization based on what little I know of them. I think this is a choice you are best equipped to make. Killjoy is the heir to a legacy of what I picture as a pretty dark hero, so whichever organization best fits that idea is fine with me.
I'd like to know at least one character in the group, preferably more, and I'd rather the relationship wasn't advisarial. Can that be arranged?
Jorian, First level characters generally can't afford something like dragonhide armor. I know it's natural to want your character to be cool, but it's important to remember that first level is the very beginning for most characters. None of us have probably ever even seen a dragon, let alone killed one and turned it into armor.
I don't want to shoot down your idea, because it is cool, it's just that it makes your character seem a little big for his britches. It's the GM's call, but if it were me running it you'd have a better chance of getting in if you toned it down a bit.
I'd like to submit a character, but I usually try to tie them into what's going on in the world (I like to be a part of the plot as much as possible).
I was only able to pick up a few hints of your setting from your write up, but here's an idea based on what I could glean-
Killjoy is a stealthy dex-based Lore Warden Fighter (who will take a splash of Four Winds Monk) in the style of Ryu from Ninja Gaiden, possibly a descendant of one of the original black-clad ten.
Would that background work?
This build requires the Dervish Dance feat to work. Do you have any issue with that feat?
