BACKGROUND:
Kesso had never even heard of Lamm and the seedy underbelly of Korvosa. She grew up the daughter of a shoe manufacturer in the Midland District and because she was not especially skilled at making shoes or selling them, she decided to go into the Korvosan Guard. She hired tutors to teach her to fight, telling her parents it was to learn how to protect the company. One of her tutors was an elderly Tien woman named Gu Chun, and Kesso quickly decided she liked the old monk, eventually considering her more of a surrogate grandmother than a teacher. Madam Chun also found herself liking the young headstrong woman and eventually taught her to use her favorite weapon, the naginata. Then one horrific night her parent's factory burned down. There was no doubt it was arson, the smell of brimstone was in the air and Kesso saw her little brother Tomas being dragged off by one of the arsonists before a timber fell on her. Out of nowhere, Madam Chun appeared and managed to drag Kesso from the fire. The combination of smoke, fatigue from the effort and age took its toll and Madam Chun died in Kesso's arms. The monk was not the only victim of the fire, her entire family perished. Her only clue as to who perpetrated the deed is the man she saw dragging her brother away, who she has identified as working for Lamm. So now she plots her revenge. Rescue her brother first and then make Lamm pay for the destruction of her family. But underlying her plans for revenge, she can not escape the dying words of her mentor, to protect those who do not have the skills to protect themselves.

6) Smarkag - a fey spirit that watches over her family. As long as no one remarks on its presence, shoes tend to get repaired overnight. Occasionally communicates with Kesso in her dreams, but he doesn't approve of all this 'fighting business'. She should settle down and start making shoes.
