If other stores have soured people on game stores for Free RPG day, then I apologize for them! Some just don't understand.... But I know there are a lot of stores out there who do get it!
Our store gave away unlimited items (while supplies last) just no more than one of anything. We also added a couple items donated by local companies (Steel Squire and Kenzer & Company)! Then we had a free raffle for 4 items...A Dark Heresy Core rulebook, one of our game store T-shirts, and two winners recieved a Star Wars Minis starter box (leftover from last week's WotC deal).
Then we ran 3 events all day that filled up!
The best thing you can do as customers are:
1) Ask your store about Free RPG Day! Are they participating? Running games?
2) People that are serious about it should volunteer to run an event for the store! Just make sure you don't bail on them, it can ruin a day's events!
3) Ask your store about Free RPG day! Give them info on it if they don't know!
I've seen comic stores as well as game stores support this, so harp on them as well!
The way I see it, this could be, and was for me, a very successful day for the RPG industry by bringing in new players and showing new things to exsisting ones!
