Always the same each time, he watches as the faceless man holds Amara in his clutches. The man drags her away through a door into the blackness beyond while she screams for him to save her. He lashes out in an attempt to break through the thugs that block his way. He succeeds and rushes to the door to help his sister. At the last second, the door slams in his face. He pounds on the hard wood to try and break through it, but to no avail. The last thing he hears is her screaming."
And then he awoke with a start, bolting upright from the horrific scene. Dripping with sweat, Kazandru looks around him in confusion. "Amara! I'm coming! Amara........" he trails off as the nightmare fades from his eyes and he realizes he was dreaming again. Standing, he walks to the water bowl and splashes the cool liquid on his face. He would never forget Amara. He would find her if it was the last thing he ever did.
Sighing, he got dressed and grabbed his things and headed out the door to the college. Professor Geezlebottle was a stickler for students being on time. Not that they had as many students as the Acadamae.
Growing up was a challenge, but at least they never went hungry. His parents lived a middle class life, and his father ran a small business that he and his sister Amara helped with as they got older. Being twins, they did everything together. There was no separating the two.
Amara loved to read, and it was through books that Kazandru first learned of something that caught his attention, magic. The book they read talked about all the fanciful things one could do with but a few words. Kazandru was fascinated by this. He tried entering the Acadamae but they were too uptight to let him apply. Theirs was for better people. Obviously he was not. As chance would have it, one of the professors of the Theumanexus College took notice of his persistence, and invited him to come by the college so that he could gauge Kazandru's desire to learn. That and he wanted to see Kazandru's reaction at having a real opportunity to learning about the arcane. He was not disappointed.
Over time his knowledge grew, as did the time he spent watching the wizards (Kazandru was not a student yet). Amara would watch with him, but recently she had been spending time in with some other kids. While this did not diminish their friendship it served to put her out of his sight where he couldn't keep an eye on her.
It wasn't until the instructor was trying to get the current students to mimic the cantrip that should have been easy for them. The teacher was becoming frustrated at their inability to do this when Kazandru finally stepped in to show them how it was done. Prior to this he had been studying both the classes and the notes left by the instructor, and had been practicing while everyone was away.
They began training him when it was realized that his abilites were innate, and that his study of the arcane was superior than even some students from the Acadamae. Professor Geezlebottle decided that his exceptional talents would not be wasted and accepted Kazandru formally as a student.
It was on one particular evening that Kazandru came home to find his parents in histerics. Amara had not come home despite leaving at the same time as he had that morning. They went to the guard to have a search started for her. Alas, the guard was too busy or some such nonsense. After some months even mom and dad finally gave up, but not Kazandru. Not him. He knew she was alive and would search until he found her. While his efforts never fully paid off, he was able to get some rumors about someone matching her description in the marketplace with other scoundrels and thieves. So she was alive. And trapped. He would rescue her if it was the last thing he did. And this Gaedren Lamm would be made to answer for what he did.
