Backstory:

They say the “Old Ways” of House Medvyed aren’t limited to the worship of Old Deadeye. In shadow-plagued vales of the Icerime Peaks and forgotten paths of the Gronzi Forest other darker and more ancient faiths endure.

Twenty-three years ago, Lord Gurev’s youngest brother Janos Medvyed disappeared with his friend Elek Rogarvia on a hunting trip in the Gronzi Forest. For two days, search parties scoured the wood, looking for the pair. Just when all hope was lost, the two reappeared outside the gates of Stoneclimb with a mysterious elven woman named Wyniess.

Their tale told of hearing a scream in the wood and seeing a black-armored knight dragging the woman over a stream before both disappeared. The nobles gave chase and as they stepped over the stream found a strange realm on the far side. Gone were the shadows of the Gronzi replaced by a brilliant sun-soaked wood where every flower seemed to be more dazzling than the next. Disappearing into the wood, the two spied the knight still pulling the woman into the clearing. The two dashed after the villain, but just as they reached the pair, brilliant spheres of light appeared in the wood and thunderous, maniacal laughter filled the clearing.

Sometime later, the two woke. Next to them, sleeping was Wyniess, a beautiful elf. Janos and Elek woke the elf, who claimed that the knight belonged to House Surtova and that she had no idea why he had captured her. Together, the two made their way back to the stream and crossing it, found themselves back in the Gronzi Forest. They returned to find that while it seemed only hours had passed in the fair realm, two days had passed in Stoneclimb.

In the following days, Wyniess stayed in Stoneclimb. They came to know that Wyniess lived in the Gronzi Forest, an herbalist that lived near several of House Medvyed’s holdings and was well-respected among their people. Days passed. Elek returned to New Stetven. Janos and Wyniess became close. And, it became evident that the elf was pregnant. Janos pressured his family to allow him to marry the elf and in spite of some misgivings, they granted permission. But, even though Stoneclimb is a more provincial court than most in Brevoy, there are still politics. And some whispered that Janos was not the father, that it was Elek Rogarvia or even the mysterious black knight.

Months passed and a wonderful, healthy baby girl was born. Janos and Wyniess named the child Kata. For an all too brief time, the small family was happy, but the next summer Janos died an tragic death in a Medvyed tournament. Sensing something more sinister afoot, mother and infant daughter fled back to the Gronzi Forest and for a time, memories of Janos and Wyniess faded.

Then came the Vanishing. Even in Medvyed, the disappearance of the Rogarvia House struck hard and fast and it wasn’t long before the conversation turned to possible lost heirs. Then someone remembered that summer and Janos and Wyniess and Elek and tales of a teenage girl and her mother that lived in Gronzi Forest.

True or rumors, hunters came. They sought Wyniess and Kata. And the two fled deeper into the Forest. Into places lost and forgotten. And that is when Kata first learned of The Lantern King. She learned of mischief and strange ways between the worlds and working magic. Her mother taught her much in those days on the run. It was terrible, but also strangely exhilarating.

Then...a week ago…a black-armored knight appeared in the wood. Kata noticed him first when she was out gathering herbs in the wood. But it was only a glimpse and she didn’t tell her mother because she wasn’t sure. She caught more glimpses over the next two days, but she still wasn’t sure. And then she returned to find her mother lying in a pool of blood and a knight with a red sword standing over her.

Kata fled. The knight gave chase. She fled south. She didn’t know where she was going or how to escape. Broken…on the edge of quitting…another knight appeared. The black knight fled. Why? Kata has no idea. The young knight. The good one. His name is Arkady Medvyed. Somehow Kata trusts him. She’s certainly not ready to share her own secrets. In fact, she’s kind of off to a bad start since she told Arkady the black knight was a Surtova. But Arkady is going to Restov and that seems like a good place to start.

2 Plot Hooks for Later:

1-Who is Kata's father? Janos Medvyed? Elek Rogarvia? The Black Knight? The Lantern King? Her mother wasn't any more clear than the rumors.
2-Are they the same knight? If so, why was he trying to capture her mother and why did he kill her this time? What does he want with Kata?

1 Reason your character absolutely can't or won't go home:

Her mother is dead. Her people have either forgotten she exists or want to capture her as a prize. Oh, and a black-armored knight has chased her clear to the edge of Brevoy. Things have to be better in the south.
