Karmaren was born in the city of Magnimar, the first of 5 children to parents who were simple street performers. Being the eldest he always felt responsible for his siblings, and found himself taking care of them while his parents were working before he grew hair on his feet. His sense of being a part of the community and taking care of family only grew over time until his name was well known as a caretaker of others in the slums where he grew.
He grew resentful and rebellious as he grew older, resentful that he was the one doing all he could to help while others around him seemed only to take, and rebellious of his parents' teachings. They took him to a priest of Erastil that lived on the outskirts of Magnimar. This priest was once a great warrior and was a standing member of the Pathfinder society. Any Pathfinders who looked in on him were always sure to call him "Venture Captain," a title that made no sense to Karmaren. This priest told him of Erastil's tenents, ideas and philosophies that Karmaren had been upholding even without knowing of them. The young halfling was amazed by what he heard, but being as thick-headed as he wascontinued refusing to listen. This priest only asked that Karmaren swear to be a part of Magnimar's Inner City festival, a time when the common citizens gather for fun and games.
Karmaren broke his promise, and only learned later that a large gang war broke out in the middle of the festival and many died, including the priest whom he swore to. He died protecting many civilians. Karmaren was devastated by the loss and decided to leave Magnimar to find himself, feeling that so many died because he was not there to protect them. His journeys led him northward to Sandpoint where he met the Mvashtis and quickly grew to like the quirky old woman known as Madame Niska. She, her daughter Koya, and Koya's adopted son Sandru became fast friends and helped Karmaren learn more of himself and helped him to hear the call that Erastil had been sending him for years.
Karmaren grew to love Sandpoint and recreated the sense of community that pervaded him as a youngling, with the Mvashtis focal to its growth. Madame Niska was always something of a seer, but Karmaren only truly believed it when she called him in to see her a few weeks before her passing, asking that he accompany Koya should she go on a long journey. Karmaren made that promise, and its one that he intends to keep, praying for redemption from the promise broken long ago.
