Kal nods with a smirk, and taps the door. With a thunk, the entire locking mechanism falls out, sand spilling onto the ground.

Going to try Transmuting the area around the lock into sand.

Kal conjures a floating light for the two of them, and a crackling orb of arcane power manifests and drifts a few feet ahead of them, illuminating their way.

"Seems prudent," the mage replies, "Do you have everything you need from here?" he asks, before heading down to find the crypts.

"Indeed" Kal begins perusing the shelves trying to find their target, and any other interesting-looking titles.

Kal wanders around, checking to ensure that there's nothing of note as he continues to move into the mansion.

Any way we could speed this up until we actually find something? We've been exploring for literally 3 months without anything really happening.

Kal takes to the air, floating across the courtyard to the south side and continuing their exploration of the house, "Quite the place. I can't help but wonder why we were contracted to explore here, though. Nothing has been even slightly dangerous yet."

Kal peeks inside one of the boxes in the storage room (checking everything for magic, naturally), before venturing into the ornate doors, "Well, this seems promising, wouldn't you say?" he asks Devon before pushing his way inside.

Kal nods in agreement, sweeping down the halls as they venture onwards, with perhaps a touch more drama than is strictly necessary.

Kal stands back a little way, keeping an eye out for anything dangerous and looking for magic.

With a likewise glance around the room, Kal continues onwards alongside Devon.

"They certainly did." Kal agrees, eyeing the figures with significantly less reverence, "And I'll see what I can do."

Any way that I could make some kind of sense that only tells me if someone enters the room? Would that require some kind of check?

"So, together or split up?" he asks, moving towards the first-floor western door and making his way through, unlocking the door as needed.

"I can give it a try." Kal replies with a shrug, "I cannot say I have tried as much before, but I believe that I know the theory."

He walks up to the door and places a fingertip on the keyhole, trying to use his magic to click the lock open.

Not sure what kind of ability this would fall under, or if Cantrip can manage it. If it can't, Kal will just turn the locking mechanism to sand.

Kal does a quick look around to see if there's any magic nearby.

I am neutral to continuing or not; it's not some great labor for me to keep checking in and posting every once in a while.

"Care to elaborate on this 'evil eye' that it supposedly provides protection from exactly?" Kal inquires, skeptically peering at what his divination is feeding him.

"Let me see that thing." Kal says, overhearing the aside with an eerie ease, "Not that I don't trust you, but.... I don't trust you."

Once he actually sees the talisman, his eyes glow momentarily in an appraising light.

Does the amulet seem legit, or what kind of check would be needed for that?

Kal considers it for a few moments, "An antiquities dealer, you say? I don't suppose you have a private library of some sort. I would consider access to such a place as compensation for such a task, in lieu of the silver, should you be open to that." he says, "But I believe I am willing to go on this treasure hunt."

"Adventurer fits as well as anything" Kal says, reclining in a manner reminiscent of a cat in the steaming water, "What business do you have that require some?" he inquires.

Kal is confused about the purpose of all this, but still takes the drink and candy after a discreet divination ensures they aren't drugged or poisoned.

"I apologize, but is all this truly required?" Kal asks the attendant, "We were under the impression that we were to be hired for a job, not partake in the bathhouse?"

Assuming that he receives an answer that satisfies him, Kal wraps an illusion around himself before disrobing, creating an area of shifting light that bears a distinct resemblance to a mirage, preventing anybody from seeing any more of himself than his robes would normally allow. He then ventures into the bath where hopefully their employer is to be found.

Kal looks around at the room, taking in the smells and sounds, and sits on one of the cushions cross-legged with a shrug, playing with a bit of magic in his palm while they wait.

Kal waits around near Devon, and passes the man a gold coin, "I'll take one shortly." he says absentmindedly, looking around.

Kal shrugs, ”Sure, I’ll come. I’ve got nothing better to do, after all.” he turns to the barkeep, having finally sat down, and signals for a drink.

"Indeed. You seem to have us at a disadvantage. You know who we are, but we don't know you. What are you thinking of today?" Kal asks.

I think we're just... not sure what to do. There's not much in the way of obvious plot hooks, and PBP isn't that conducive to a sandbox-style game from my experience.

Kal turns back to Devon, "So, little elfie. You seem to have had quite the adventure without us. Mind if I tag along next time you go somewhere? It's hard finding excitement these days, but you just can't even leave the city without it, can you?"

"Newts? Nah. Making someone smarter than they already are is a pain. Hmmm... Would you lot prefer sandstone, or just loose sand? With the latter, you can continue to be an irritant for the foreseeable future." Kal's voice turns deadly serious, and some sort of illusion kicks in that makes his voice sound like it's coming from a giant creature, but only to the trio, "Now get. Before I lose my patience."

Kal stands up and signals to Devon to join him, "Hello, friend! Good to see you again. Why don't you join me? I'm certain I'll make a better companion than you currently have."
He glares at the three, fixing his stare on the thugs to see their response.

Kal sits off to the side, sipping his cider, listening for any stories about local dragons, and potentially their hunters.

With a raised eyebrow, the transmuter turns to Grith, "You know, you might actually have some competition there, unlike with me. I'm no good throwing things, even like this." he comments absent-mindedly.

Kal raises an eyebrow, "I think you're overestimating my throwing abilities." he shrugs, "But if you want to, certainly."

Kal looks at the rowdy figures, shakes his head, muttering, "Children" and works a small spell, dampening the sounds as he grabs a drink.

Kal snorts softly, turning away and continuing towards the Grey Minstrel.

Kal stands off to the side as Grith pauses, waiting to see the response the boy gives.

Kal shrugs, "Works for me. I have some studies to attend to, and some ideas for a new spell, but that can wait." he tells Grith, and heads off with the dwarf towards the tavern.

I’m just not really sure what to do. Kal is semi-intentionally at a stage in his life where he’s just wandering around aimlessly looking for adventure. Without a goal, he doesn’t really have anything to do.
Basically, I’m looking/waiting for the next hook.

Kal nods in appreciation, "Thank you, professor." he says.

With his 'pass' to the library and the museum, Kal tries to learn about anatomy and physiology of various magical creatures, presumably with the aim of learning to aid his transmutation abilities.

What happened with the Bulette corpse?

Kal senses the discomfort in their companion, "Devon, right? Do you have a better suggestion? I'm merely seeking to dispatch the beast in a way with the least harm to us. There's a decent chance it wouldn't even feel a thing."

"Metal?" Kal asks, "That's doable." he closes his eyes for a moment to ensure that the ankheg is indeed still within its enclosure Using my Cantrips to get an appropriate Sensing power, whatever that may be, then transmutes the prison, starting with the inner layer, to solid iron.

He turns to Toots,
"That should hold it, right? Do you happen to know how they breathe while underground? I know that's frequently a problem for burrowers." then, he tries transmuting the air inside the sphere into sand, hopefully suffocating the creature.

"Can they truly burrow through solid stone, though? Sandstone may not be the hardiest material on the material planes, but it is still no loose soil." Kal responds, his feet touching the ground for the first time since the creatures appeared, "They do still need to breathe, yes? A suffocated beast might do well in the collection of the professor." he posits.

I was more thinking just trying to help nullify any ongoing damage that might come from the acid (if any), sort of like I did a couple rounds ago.

That, and I'm mainly trying to rack my brain for anything useful that doesn't require rolling a d20. I think the dice roller hates me in this game.

Kal prepares to take action, pulling a spell to the tips of his fingers, to transmute any acid the ankheg tries to spit to sand before it strikes any of the hunters.

Kal looks at Devon trying desperately to get the acid off him, and with a wave of his hand, all the goo turns to sand and falls harmlessly to the ground below.

Kal gives up, and instead of throwing lightning this time, he extends his transmutation into the area around the less-injured ankheg, forming a bubble of sandstone around the creature and isolating it from the fight.

Attempting to use Mass Transmutation (Create) to make a box for one of the creatures to take it out of the combat for now. Unsure what rolls to make there.

I don't suppose either of you were at PhysCon, were you? Because that's where I was.

Kal keeps trying, at this point mainly trying to get his lightning to show that he could as much as anything.

Kal attempts to blast the bound ankheg, but his lightning seems stubbornly opposed to actually going where he wants it.

As the lightning flashes into the ground, Kal clenches his fist, Not a chance he thinks, and lets his transmutation race in front of the lightning, transmuting the dirt to sand and from sand to metal, guiding the shockwave through the ground and back up into the ankheg.
