Kailynn is a creature from the fey wilds, sent as an ambassador of sorts to the mortal plane. His twin missions were to protect those in need and find out what he could about the mortal plane with the understanding that the fey wilds would one day call him home.
In his pursuit of protecting people, he noticed how unconcerned about the environment certain businesses were, and became an outspoken person in these regards.
This didn't just not go well with the businesses in question, but also one Milo Hudson, a reporter who did TV editorial pieces. Most of his pieces on Kailynn was that superheroes should stay out of politics.
Meanwhile, one of the CEOs had had enough of the outspoken shapeshifter and decided to enlist the aid of a mind controller. The mind controller targeted Kailynn and told him to attack the reporter while remembering everything he did.
It was sheer force of will that kept Kailynn from killing the reporter. The case was cut and dry because of his memories in conjunction with the fact that the victim and Kailynn had issues with each other was used by the prosecution shot down the defense's defense of mind control.
Kailynn is incarcerated on the assault and battery of the reporter, the one saving grace of the defense which proved that if the hero would have wanted the reporter dead, he would have had no problem doing so.
