Jone was born in a poor family who drifted from city to city in Cheliax. As soon as she hit the age of fourteen she left her inebriated parents and made her way to where she hoped the big money lay, the Shackles.
By age fifteen she was what she considered wealthy. Now at age eighteen having lost her fortune, been a slave to a Cyclops, gone massively in debt and repaid the debt she is ready to try for wealth again. Among other things, people are a lot nicer when you are rich. To Jone's view, Desna is the only logical choice for a deity. She doesn't ask much, she's good, so she will never backstab you, and if you don't have luck, then you do not have anything.
