Appearance:

John towers over most people that he has met. Standing at 6’6” his father used to joke that his family was descended from giants, and maybe they were though John doubted it. He grew up learning the trade of logging and thus is never far from an ax and his arms a strong and muscled from years of swinging it into the trunks of the large oak trees that grew around his families home in the River Kingdoms. John keeps his hair cut short and the chestnut color and has the sheen freshly lacquered rosewood. His eyes are a piercing blue and that he got from his mother. She was of slight build and had fair hair the exact opposite of his father. He has a gruff beard that he has given up trying to shave as it grows back too quickly for him to keep up with. He wears a loose forest green tunic over glittering mail and two hatchets are tucked into his belt. He takes great pride in his shield that he built out of sturdy oak. On its face he painted a crude picture of a tree with a wedge cut out of it. John is no artist and the picture is quite crude but don’t say that to his face. Johns temper is a fiery one, that too he gets from his mother, and it becomes explosive when he has been drinking or is in the heat of battle. The battleaxe is Johns weapon of choice and he goes nowhere without one. The one he currently has is none too special and he is constantly having to sharpen out the nicks in the blade that is obviously made of cheap steel, but never the less its a tool, and in Johns hands it is deadly.

Personality:

John is loud and boisterous, and that’s when he hasn’t been drinking. As long as you stay on his good side John can be a great guy. He is always looking out for those who can’t protect themselves. Growing up in a cabin with his mother and father in the middle of the woods he learned that family was the most important thing in life. When his wife and son were ripped away from him her turned bitter and leaned heavily on drink to get him through it. As time past the bitterness subsided but his love for all things intoxicating did not. John can frequently be found in bars challenging locals to friendly drinking contests or buying rounds for people he doesn’t know. John doesn’t do well with authority and telling him that he is wrong or what to do is a good way to get yourself hurt. While he can be fun loving most of the time John has an explosive temper and the smallest spark is enough to set him into a frenzy. Nothing makes John madder than seeing someone defenseless being taken advantage of. Ever since his wife was murdered he hasn’t had a meaningful relationship, believing that she was the love of his life and no matter how hard he searches no one will ever be able to fill her shoes. His motivations for venturing into the stolen lands are simple; to help those in need, to find the people of murdered his wife and son, and to carve out a new life.

Background:

It's been 18 years since John set out to carve his own path in this world and by his accounts he's been doing pretty well. Yeah he's gone broke a few dozen times. Probably will be again before the world takes him. Hell once he woke up naked in a grove of elms and had to rebuild from nothing but that never stopped John. No John knew he was destined for greatness. His dad had been a logger and his dad before him and so on as far back as they could recall as long and there were trees John’s family was there to chop them down. He grew up in a small cabin that his father had built from trees he had cut. And at one point John had built himself a cabin and accepted his fate taking up the family tradition of logging. Even took a wife. Had a son. But that was before the raids, and the fire. All of that now is nothing but dark memories of a different life. When the life he knew crumbled around him John decided to set out on his grand adventure, or so he hoped, as of yet not much adventuring has occurred. Mostly just drunken brawls, gambling debts, and the occasional woman, but he never forgot the promise he made to himself to find and kill the men responsible for the death of his family.

He did accidentally sign up for the military one night while drunk and spent 9 agonizing months marching and drilling in and around a decent sized town. Never once did he see any real combat, unless you count chasing a few goblins out of a stable once in a while, but at least it taught him to properly fight. The commander of John’s unit was a shrewd man named Divintus Cole. A man who came from money and wanted everyone to know it. He was no soldier, more of disciplinarian and was known for his cold demeanor. He regularly woke the unit early to go on long “patrols” resulting in nothing but a disgruntled band of tired men. To make matters worse Divintus despised drink, a belief that was not shared among the soldiers, least of all John. This led to far too many disagreements with his commanding officer that usually resulted in him having to muck out the latrines. But John wasn't born to be a military man, too many rules and not enough trees, and it didn’t help that he had an officer that was making his life a living hell. So he did what any sensible person would do he got drunk, ditched everything he had by the river, made it look like he fell in and ran.

That was all before he met Colewin Binderbook. I curious fellow that little halfling, he met him one night or rather Colewin met John while he was especially drunk and had wagered that he could chop down the biggest tree he could find in under 15 minutes while drinking a beer. Of course he lost that wager spilled most of the beer on himself and missed the trunk as oft as not. But Colewin did notice something special in John maybe it was a the confidence in his voice when he placed the bet, or the way he seemed to shrug off the fact that he had just bet off the rest of his gold, or maybe it was his shear strength. When he did hit the tree (which did happen a time or two) the ax bit so deep in the trunk it would have taken a troll just to heave it out, but John pulled it out one handed like it was nothing. He probably would have chopped that tree down one handed had he not been quite so drunk. The next morning Colewin found John sleeping in the stables with his head on his pack and hugging his ax as though it were his lover. He threw a bucket of water on John and told him about the group being sent into the stolen lands and the opportunities to make good coin there. This was it a job as a bona fide adventurer, a chance to make something of himself more than just a mere logger, and greatest of all his chance to finally find the ones who had torched his house and family so many years ago. even gave him a down payment to follow him back to Restov as long as John promised not to drink it all. John to took an instant liking to this Halfling and accepted his offer as graciously as he knew how. So he saddled up his mare and followed Colewin to the city.

After a few hours of travel they arrived at Restov. The Halfling told John that he had business with a cleric who owed him a great deal of coin and pointed John in the direction of the nearest inn.

“Remember that money was investment, arm yourself and be ready for when I come, I will be in need of your services soon”. And with that Mr. Binderbook was off, disappearing into the crowed with ease.

“What a curious little fellow” John thought to himself, “but he did give me a decent amount of coin so he’s alright in my book.”

As John walked in the direction of the inn he saw so many people and many dressed like they were ready to fight. Sure John had his axe and hatchet and a few tools in his pack, and he probably could take any of these men in a fist fight but John realized that he was very ill prepared and so he set out get the gear he needed and he decided that the first thing he was some new armor and a shield. A shield he could make, just needed the right tree and a bit of time at a workbench but a fine set of mail would be harder to come by?

“Well I guess that’s what all this money is for,” John pondered to himself “better find a smith. And a pub, need to find a pub this headache is killing me. Like someone was trying to chop into my skull last night.”

John shook his head vigorously, which only made things worse, and set out to find a drink, a Smith, and a tree. In that order.
