Fluff:

Appearance
Jirani has a darker complexion tending towards a tanned look in winter time to an almost dark leather look when in the sun for prolonged periods. Jirani keeps his head and face shaved bare. Jirani is prone to smiling and often and normally sticks to the purples, silvers, blacks and greys that mark his dedication to the Lady of Graves.

Personality

Jirani is warm and friendly, an often confusing and off putting mixture when considered against his service to Pharasma and his role as a bearer of divine power. Jirani holds vocal beliefs that service to Pharasma is best done with a sense of ease and support though he understands why many in such service can be stoic or reserved. In this way Jirani can seem quite odd.

Whether it is aiding the dying or dead, assisting those being brought into the world or defending those whose time has not yet come Jirani holds an intense belief in Pharasma's cosmic plan and sees his and others in her service as agents of her unknown plan. Jirani shares this faith with a lust for life, a propensity to laugh and an open demeanor that invites friendship. Jirani has often rendered his aid to adventurers needing able bodied healers or communities who need assistance with the dead, dying or newly born.

Jirani's faith is intense and his easy smile and warm personality can give way to a cold and intense focus when he believes that the will of his orders tenants have been perverted or denied. To this end he carries an intense dislike for torturers and slavers (seeing these acts as a perversion of the gift of life) and an open hostility towards worshippers and practitioners of the necromantic arts.

Jirani is warm, dedicated, and compassionate.

Background

The 5th of 7 children it has been whispered that Jirani has a special relationship with life and death. Born to a moderately successful family of merchants and sailors Jirani spent as much time on the boats of his family's fleet as he did on land in the city of Absalom. Tending towards a more awkward build and bookish way than his older brothers, Jirani was content nonetheless to do his part amongst the various ships of his family as they sailed throughout the Inner Sea taking trade goods and passengers to their myriad destinations.

At age 11 Jirani was the sole survivor of a storm that claimed 3 ships, an uncle, two older brothers and his father. At age 13 beset again amidst a violent storm with his pregnant mother and remaining brothers, Jirani aided in the delivery of his twin sisters while the rest of the crew struggled to keep the ship afloat and in one piece. Such oddities of life and death continued for the next three years. Women would go into labor with only Jirani on hand to render aid. Men and women would die in intense or mysterious circumstances with Jirani to bear witness. Glimpses of these moments would come to the young man but he struggled to know

Whispers among the family and their various employees noted the oddities of fate that followed Jirani. These swirling rumors and whispered words sparked Jirani's curiosity and he spent his days ashore seeking scholars, bards and bearers of knowledge who might know more about why a young man such as he might have so many spectacular events centered on living and dying following him around.

In the end, knowledge came to Jirani as his family was hired to provide transportation to well respected scholar of ancient Pharasaman cults and sects. This scholar revealed an almost forgotten divine order called 'The Bearers of Red Sand', a paladin order noted for its dedication to spreading the gift of life and easing the transitions of death in the name of supporting Pharasma's grand vision. So named for the red sand that the goddess was said to control within her hourglass.

Though the order had never received recognition as part of Pharasma's church, the handful of dedicants found themselves marked by strange occurrences of fate, strange glimpses of the future and a special relationship with life and death. As such they built a system of worship and a code of conduct that saw themselves steeped in holy power, regardless of the Pharasman churches' concern. The order takes their continued power as a sign they serve the greater purpose upon which they have based their faith.

So informed Jirani used the scholars knowledge and contacts to find members of the fellowship first in Absalom and then on to the likes of Korvosa and Restov. A supplicant of the powers that aid the order, Jirani learned from his visions and attained training for his body and mind. Now older and more steeped in his unique faith, Jirani travels the world attempting to understand his role...
