Before the council breaks, Laria adds: "Rexus is... was my friend long before any of this started. We lost him when we evacuated the Wasp's Nest. It's strange... not being there anymore. Imagine, a halfling-owned business in Cheliax; run by a former slave... now abandoned. Rexus, I think we left some of his things there. I hate seeing him like this and if we plan to preserve his body, then I'd like to get some of his old clothing. We owe him at least that..."

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

"I disagree," Octavio interjects. "We do not have the support base and numberz to take and hold Kintargo Keep for any length of time. Yet. We're not going to win this war in one day. We are far outnumbered and need to be smart about his, wear Thrune down and force him into making tactical errors. Based on the evidence on hand, in addition to storming the Keep and Temple of Asmodeus, I'm going to suggest the following, but as always leave the final decisions to the council."

"First, we need to replace our missing officers. Either by retrieving Ramrut and Nick's corpses, and seeing them returned to life. Or through the promotion of existing members." I'll allow a free action for restructuring the officer positions.

"Second, the Eternal Rose has seen fit to grant Tessara access to greater power. We should consider taking the time to use the divination and scrying magics available to her. Even if just to find Hetamon."May take days as you shuffle spell slots around and weigh up adventuring against your willingness to travel with fewer level 4 and 5 spells available.

"Third, I did not know Rexus well, but I know that we cannot allow him to suffer anymore. He needs to be put down before he harms anybody else. According to our spies and Morgar's rumour mills, Thrune has moved to the Temple of Asmodeus, leaving Rexus in charge of his new noble house within the Opera House. A second trip there would also allow us to see if Thrune left any potential clues about his upcoming plans, which we may have missed last night."

"Fourth, Count Auxis Aulorian died last night, leaving Marquel, the Poison Pen, as the head of the Aulorian House. If we can convince the good Captain to allow it, we should see Marquel returned to his noble estate to claim his birthright, and through it, grant us access to whatever remains of his family's resources."

"Fifth, Molly Mayapple arrived in town this morning, bringing grave news. She's currently set up at my cousin's place, but we should consider inviting her to the Lucky Bones. She's trapped in this city with everybody else, but I believe that she could provide a valuable assistance. As for the news, she brought a warning: Vyre's Skinsaw Cult has come to town, led by one Hei-Fen... the last surviving Gray Spiders guild mistress. She may be looking to reclaim her old home... and vengeance against the Order of the Torrent."

"Sixth, the Kintargo Records Hall has been turned into Thrune's propaganda machine. It is there that he creates his proclamations and where his inquisitors and redactors seek to rewrite our history, so that whatever we achieve today, we'll be seen as the villains. We need to shut this machine down if we are ever to win the hearts of the citizenry."

"Seventh, we need to gain control of Bleakbridge. Without it, our movements throughout the city will be impeded."

"Eighth, and most daunting of all... you all know that Thrune had Songbird Hall razed last night. Numerous witnesses claim that it was more than a simple act of arson. They say that Thrune summoned a blue dragon to burn the church down with an all-consuming hellfire. If Thrune has a pet dragon, we need to engage it on our terms and put it down." Civilians killed during the dragon strike: 3d6 + 12 ⇒ (3, 6, 6) + 12 = 27

But it's not all bad news!

"Mistress Docur and Laria have taken the decision to personally lead teams from their respective organisations. Docur promises the full support of the Lacunafex, while Laria has sent instruction to reactive all regional Bellflower Network cells." Spreadsheet contains details.

As the dawn breaks, what sunlight breaks through the blanket of smoke above the city, reveals a very specific, targeted message. Thrune had Nick and Ramrut's corpses painted silver and strung up against the opera house walls. Stripped of most of their gear, somebody made sure to leave the mayor's gifts on their heads: Ramrut's jingasa and Nick's headband. Below them, splashed in red over the opera house's main entrance, reads: "The House of Victacora".

While the church of Shelyn burns to the ground, the remaining Ravens meet to discuss the way ahead.

New rules for spies and saboteurs: each team can take one sabotage or covert action during the week, at any time, as a bonus rebellion action, to represent the increased urgency of the situation. You can use one such action to recover your corpses.

Proclamation the Eleventh—Bleakbridge Closure: “With the uprise in rebel activity, it pains my heart to issue the closure of Bleakbridge to all but official traffic, yet such steps are necessary to ensure your protection! The Silver Ravens must not be allowed free access across the Yolubilis, and until you aid in their defeat, Bleakbridge shall remain closed and under guard.”

Proclamation the Twelfth—Public Religion: “Public worship of any deity other than Lord Asmodeus, Savior of Cheliax, Master of Humanity, is hereby forbidden. All works of art and artifice bearing the likenesses or symbols of the lesser faiths must be turned over to the dottari. Worship of Zon-Kuthon and Abadar may continue only within the walls of their respective temples. Noncompliance shall be met with the strictest of correctional steps.”

Proclamation the Thirteenth—Outlawing of the Silver Ravens: “The destructive and ruinous anarchists known as the Silver Ravens are hereby proscribed, and until their leaders surrender or are captured, all Silver Raven sympathizers must disavow support of this extremist group, lest they be faced with fines, imprisonment, and excruciation!”

Fushi sisters gather information on Jhaltero family: Secrecy 1d20 + 14 + 12 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 14 + 12 + 6 = 38

Korrva presents another complete dossier. The Jhaltero family, led by Baron Canton Jhaltero, made their fortune by trading in silver, stone, and information. The Baron, though soft-spoken, is a shrewd businessman and excellent judge of character. An officer may be able to sway him to join the rebellion, by impressing him with your wealth of knowledge (Knowledge [any] DC 30) or your skill in reading social cues and motivations (Sense Motive DC 30).

One PC can roll these skill checks in the PbP, so that we can flesh out the mechanical benefits before our next live session. We can play out the meeting in a flash back at the table. Failure will not prevent you from trying again in later weeks or using the rebellion action option below:

Maggie, however, as always, uncovered a little bit extra. The Baron is ferociously protective of family (Maggie's words) and the recent turmoil has him worried. He would like to smuggle some of his family to Vyre, at least until things settle down.

The good Captain Sargaeta will gladly smuggle the family as a favour. Alternatively, you may attempt a Security check as a rebellion action in the following week.

Event chance 84%: 1d100 ⇒ 1
Event number d100 + danger: 1d100 + 20 ⇒ (56) + 20 = 76

During the lead up to the Ruby Masquerade, the Lord-Mayor understandably increases dottari patrols throughout Kintargo. Captain Sargaeta's crew, however, run enough interference/feed enough intelligence through to the Ravens so that event has no effect on the rebellion.

Kush acquires several doses of scent blocker.

Kush decides to investigate the Church (presumably of Asmodeus) hoping that their archives can drop something useful. He gathers some basic information on the comings-and-going of the church (what kind of sentries, protections, etc he can expect); then attempts to sneak in at an opportune time when he can expect to look through their archives relatively unmolested.

[dice=Knowledge (local), Church (of Asmodeus?)]1d20 + 12
[dice=Stealth, into church archives]1d20 + 30
[dice=Perception (or whatever is needed to look for the information)]1d20 + 15

Or if necessary, Kush can take 10 on all stealth actions for a stealth of 40.

Kush, no high risk actions like this on the PbP. That's for the table. PbP is for rebellion actions.

I don't want to reduce the church to 1 Stealth roll. Nor do I want to run a 100+ series of posts about your adventures and untimely death in the church. There's not enough time for that between live sessions.

Thought 21: Menador gap is closed, but the victory seems hard won. The three carry themselves differently somehow. I can't quite put my finger on it. Tessara has been visiting Zachrin again, looking for guidance or counsel, something. I'll be here if she needs me. For now, I'll continue working on her headband.

Hetamon completes Nick's bracers and begins work on upgrading Tessara's headband. 3 000 deducted from the treasury. 1155 already deducted for Kush's buckler.

Tessara's level grants her another bonus team this week. When Hetamon finishes Tessara's headband next week, her Leadership score will be high enough to nett another bonus teams, for a total of two more.

Thought 22: Everybody's talking about the Ruby Masquerade: Who are we sending? How are we getting people in? Do we need to forge invitations or do we simply take invitations from our allies and friends? Do we allow our friends to attend? Do we need to be elsewhere in town during the event? Octavio thinks he needs to go, in case things get violent... though I'm sure that's just a convenient excuse to hide that he's just worried about Tessara. It's a lot to consider; I'm not surprised that the officers are taking an extra week off to prepare for it.

Thought 23: Aava spoke to me today. She plans to recommend a course of action, but wanted to discuss it with somebody before taking it to Ramrut and the other officers. She asked about a a hat of disguise to help her infiltrate the opera house wait staff. She thinks that it wouldn't be too difficult, but she'd need to at least make herself appear more human. Of course, we discussed more than that, including planting supply caches in the opera house Especially if our representatives attend unarmed and unarmoured, access to cleverly placed supplies might prove the difference on the night. I could certainly prepare a collection of potions for such a cache, even craft the hat, if I work non-stop over the next two weeks. Thankfully, I have Zea to pick up the slack at the store...

We're doing two weeks of rebellion actions, giving you extra time to equip and prepare yourselves for the ball.

Kush, there's no additional information about the Song of Silver (beyond what you found on your first adventure with Rexus. Thank you Redactors!) Of course, there may be more in the church's or Thrune's archives. Who knows?

Thought 20: Octavio seems so sure that both Rexus and the former mayor, Jilia Bainilus, still live and are somewhere in Kintargo yet. He had chosen to hide with the Seers of St Senex, because the high water table there confused certain divination spells. Now, with the Jarvis family blueprints, he has theorised that Thrune might have similarly protected locations beneath opera house. I believe he's going to push the Ravens into attending the masquerade, which should provide the cover necessary to explore beneath the opera house.

Thought 15: The rebellion held a small celebration to not only mark their progress, but to cement new friendships and reiterate our promise to help Acisazi. I don't know who started it, but some of the other teams have given Tessara, Nick, Kush, and Ramrut's team a name: the Sentinels. It suits them, I think. But I wonder how they feel about it.

Thought 16: Zea has been a most competent apprentice, quickly learning both the tailor's trade and the Everbloom's teachings. Today she came into the store with a letter, from the Lord-Mayor himself: an invitation to the upcoming Ruby Masquerade. The invitation even included a special note, apologising for the appalling treatment she suffered under the Chelish Citizen's Group when they attempted to doghouse her. Dad's been helping her plan her outfit for the event. Until a few weeks ago, a sheet of high quality paper would have been worth more than all of her belongings and we're now setting aside some of most expensive fabrics for her. She deserves it.

However, I won't stop until I've canvassed this entire city. However, I don't think it's necessarily in the city's best interest to divert too many resources in the search for the Victocora boy. I therefore vote that we focus on the noble houses. On the one hand, we need their support. On the other hand, Rexus may have also approached old family allies. Approaching the noble families therefore covers two goals."

BTW, I put Docur's bonus into Secrecy, to help the Gather Information actions.

Korrva Fushi compiles and delivers a rather impressive report, fully detailing the lives and activities of the Aulamaxa family. Led by Archbaroness Eldonna Aulamaxa, the house stands firm against Thrune. (i.e. can be swayed to side with the Ravens) The house's interest lies in hunting, opera and the arts, and public opinion.

The Archbaroness, both a proficient warrior and connoisseur of the arts, is a known flirt and gossip. An officer might be able to win over the Archbaroness through proving his or her skill at hunting (Survival) or the performing arts (Arts) (which we can play through at the table). However, we could also impress her through proving how effectively we can manipulate the Kintargo rumour mill (spread disinformation rebellion action), by seeding the right messages among the nobility.

She also dotes on her beloved (and overly aggressive) poodle Harcule.

Gather information (Jarvis): Secrecy 1d20 + 6 + 6 + 13 ⇒ (16) + 6 + 6 + 13 = 41

Not to be outdone by the Fushi sisters, Morgar presents an impressive dossier on the Jarvis family. The family matriarch, Baroness Belcara Jarvis, is unusually passionate about architecture even for a family that made its fortune in architecture, carpentry, city planning, and stonemasonry. The family aligns itself with traditional Kintargan values, mixed with a healthy dose of civic duty and responsibility. In public, the family is known to favour the church of Abadar. However, within the confines of their noble estate, the family secretly worships the Drunken Hero, Cayden Cailean.

An officer might be able to win over the Baroness with his or her knowledge of construction and civil engineering (Craft, Profession, Knowledge (engineering)). Alternatively, the Raven could put our words into action and place a greater emphasis on protecting and uplifting the common folk (reduce danger rebellion action). Of course, if we have a devout Caydenite among the officers, we might be appeal to her religious beliefs.

Note: I added in the bonuses for level 7 PCs and the Leadership feat where appropriate (e.g. Tessara now grants a +6 team management bonus). Also, Tessara recruits bonus teams instead of followers (special campaign rules for Leadership). She already has a high enough Leadership score for one bonus team. Discuss!

There's a spare CMW potion in the treasury. We'll handle distribution of consumables at the start of the next session (I want to explain how I want to work with them in the spreadsheet). If you need to buy anymore potions/scrolls after that, we'll roll the availability checks then.

Morgar's (and Vendalfek's!) whisper campaign has done a lot to counter the Lord-Mayor's gifting ceremony fallout. Laria even remarks: "We nearly lost Morgar, when we were just a rag tag group of pretend heroes under the coffeehouse. I'm glad that we handled the Blosodriette problem as well as we did... though it's strange thinking about the people we've lost since..." Using Nick's roll, notoriety drops by 6 to a total of 13

"As requested, Lictor, this is everything that the Fushi sisters could uncover about our "new friend", Mistress Docur."

Alabaster Academy (Rexus' alma mater) is not the only institute of learning in Villegre. Among the numerous smaller private schools, Lady Docur’s School for Girls is the oldest. The forlorn elf Mialari Docur founded this boarding school three centuries ago to educate young Chelish noblewomen in the ways of the elves, which were in vogue at the time. Today, the student body is almost entirely composed of half-elves from across Cheliax, Isger, and Molthune.

However, there is more to her story than that. Since my sisters and I arrived in Kintargo, we've been feeling out the (and I can't think of a polite way to say this) organised crime scene. It seems Mistress Docur provides the most promising of her students with more than just a proper education. She trains a few hand-selected students to join a secret society called the Lacunafex - a sisterhood of spies, which she's been running for centuries. We almost didn't identify this lead, until Hetamon pointed out a few tidbits in Portia Victocora's soul tome. It seems the Sacred Order of the Archivists frequently worked with the Lacunafex, using them as secret messengers. Portia left enough clues behind to link Docur to the Lacunafex. Based on Hetamon's research it looks like Turik was on the verge of piecing this together... and it looks like Rexus actually did manage to piece it together.

If Mistress Docur wants a meeting, you can be sure its not to discuss the establishment of a Silver Raven bursary trust.

RIVALRY!

1d5 ⇒ 2 Fushi sisters
1d5 ⇒ 1 Torrent armigers

During the course of the week, Maggie snuck up on Illsani, while Illsani was on watch duty. To say the least, the armiger didn't respond pleasantly. A scuffle ensued which left both teams bruised.

Korrva and Octavio intervened, which prevented any lasting harm or animosity, but neither team is available for operations next week. One officer may attempt a DC 20 Bluff, Diplomacy, or Intimidate check to end the rivalry immediately (and thus free up both teams for next week).

Luculla adeptly rebuffs any attempts to "reach out" or "understand" her. Without the opportunity to cast her daily abjurations and illusions, her true nature becomes clear quickly (such as her LE cleric's aura). She responds to most questions with a simple: "I am simply as you see me." Though, if pushed, she is not above using passive-aggressive sarcasm to make hurtful remarks about the Rebellion's inability to protect its secrets, Tessara and Octavio's relationship, Nick's crush, and those that died in service to the Ravens.

Only Kush seems to get anywhere. Luculla does not hide that she finds Kush's research impressive. She takes pains to point out the common misconceptions, obfuscations, and blatant lies that Kush manages to present. "The mindscape, it's real. The Dowager's own realm where the faithful can meet, talk, and trade. Secrets are seen as currency there, but many happily consider souls as acceptable."... "It's not merely about the quest for knowledge. It's about recognising that, ultimately, mortal existence is limited and meaningless. It's about learning how to identify the falsehoods that obscure the true meaningless of our lives... it's about learning how to grasp those falsehoods and bend them into something more... to reshape reality."..."Would you like to see it, Adyton?"

Kush, if you want to have further discussions with Luculla, we can do so offline and/or via e-mail. She won't engage with the other officers.

Ramrut, after a few days in the Lucky Bones, you uncover another secret door (which even Luculla didn't know about). It's located at the bottom of the pit trap (Tessara and Babou fell into it during the last session). The door isn't trapped and looks like it will open easily, potentially providing another route beyond the iron door. If the party wants to cast any divination spells before hand, let me know (or we can handle it at the table).

During one of Tessara's visits to the Long Roads Coffeehouse, Laria reveals that she received a package from the Docur's School for Girls headmistress, Mialari Docur. The package included a request for a meeting between Headmistress Docur and the "four fine Ravens" that stood up to the Lord-Mayor in Aria Park two weeks ago. To help facilitate such a meeting, the package also included a gift, which the Ravens may keep even should they choose not to meet with Headmistress Docur. No strings attached (apparently).

The package included 4 wands (CL 1st, 50 charges each): a wand of cure light wounds, a wand of grease, a wand of obscuring mist, and a wand of silent image.

RPG Superstar 2011 Top 4

Glad that you picked a team-focused wand as your gift. But that's not how I'm running the gifts. You could get the wand from one of the temples. As for magic weapons, you have merchants to refresh the market place and/or you can run on oils, scrolls, and spells until you do find a magic bow.

Once you clear out the Lucky Bones completely, I shall share the maps with you. This will be important later, as you'll see below. For now though, there are no real holding cells except the room that held the twins. Alternatively, you could convert one of the bedrooms into one. The doors, however, do not lock (due to the swelling of the wood over the years). It should go without saying, but Setrona does NOT let you to imprison Luculla at the Tooth and Nail.

Thought 10: Luculla. I'm glad that the Ravens managed to capture her alive, but that does nothing to temper my sadness. They're currently holding her... Nick and Tessara believe that she can be redeemed. I'm not so sure... She was responsible for at least 5 murders and 7 kidnappings. And I know of no cleric powerful enough to help her through an [i]atonement. Not even Tessara. At least, not yet.

Thought 11: We've begun moving into the Lucky Bones. Octavio wishes to set up a functioning fallback position before we open the Torrent seal. If we are to believe Luculla, there are dozens of undead roaming the halls beyond the iron door. The Hellknights and I shall hold the door while the officers hunt down the dead and release them from their cursed existence. If they run into trouble down there, they can retreat back to the door, where Octavio and his knights (and I) can intervene if needed.

Thought 12: While the Hellknights prepare a defensive line, the other off-duty teams have been seeing to the repair and refurbishment of the Lucky Bones. According to Luculla she discovered it several years ago, when it was nothing more than a ruined shrine dedicated to the Reaper of Reputation. She has put a lot of effort into reconsecrating (redescrating?) it as a shrine dedicated to the Dowager of Illusions. She even went as far as stoneshaping the Reaper's statues into statues of the Dowager. Tessara and I are going to be kept busy for weeks to come. Though I do not mind the work.

Thought 13: Octavio just read us all the riot act. He's furious. All the talks about security and secrecy for nothing as Nick and Tessara have been bringing down all manner of spiritual advisors. Sure most of the Ravens knew about the Lucky Bones, but few knew the specifics of its entrance and defenses. He has a point. Luculla managed to find her way into several of the officer's planning sessions and... and she turned out to be who she is. Octavio even gave us homework. He expects us to present our ideas and plans to ensure the safety of our new hide out at the next planning session. In the interim, he's placed his armigers on a watch rotation. Between preparing to breach the iron door and maintaining the watch, he has little time to search for Rexus. It's clearly straining him as obviously torn between his duty to the Ravens and promise to Tessara. Perhaps she and I should talk about it.

Thought 6: I don't know what to make of the Lord-Mayor's actions. Some of the Ravens believe that we've all but "won the war". I'm not so sure. At least Tassara and Octavio are moving forward with plans to establish a more suitable base of operations. Kush, Nick, and Ramrut have stepped forward to fill the leadership void. They're doing an admirable job, especially Kush. The Ravens seemed to have accepted him and few, if any, give him any hassle. That they have accepted me too speaks volumes about their ideologies. Perhaps I'll live to see an equitable Kintargo, where everybody gets afforded the respect and opportunities they deserve.

Thought 7: This week, the Ravens will be launching their first expedition into the Lucky Bones. The Silver Knights (that's what they call themselves), delivered some disturbing intelligence. A cult of devil worshippers, led by a coven of changelings, have taken up residence. I hope the Ravens can handle things peacefully. However, we have enough evidence which indicates that the changelings worship the Dowager of Illusions. Zachrin was able to tell us a bit about the Dowager, one of the four demigods known as the Whore Queens. He didn't paint a pretty picture. How will the Ravens handle such a cult? How far does religious tolerance go? Can an equitable Kintargo tolerate such a cult?

Thought 8: An otyugh cleric of Gozreh? Here in the sewers of Old Kintargo? How could I not know this? The Ravens should do everything in their power to help it finds its lost younglings. He might be the sole reason that Old Kintargo's aging sewer infrastructure still works.

Thought 9: The Gray Queen poses an interesting conundrum. On the one hand, she has proven to be a source of excellent intelligence. On the other hand, she is a source of terrible disease. There has been some discussion about exterminating her, but a few Ravens think its worth setting up a quarantine system of sorts. I just spent the last week treating several Knights (they discovered the Queen) for what appeared to be bubonic plague. Tassara and I had to invest several long nights of care and numerous castings of remove disease to bring their infections under control. I will need to monitor the rest of the Ravens for signs of infection for weeks to come. I know Kintargo does not have the resources to give every citizen the same level of medical care and healing. This city cannot survive both Thrune and a plague.

Rumours overheard in Old Kintargo:

"The Lord-Mayor stopped the public excrutiations. Funny that he did that just after the Aria Park negotiations (you were there, right?). I'm led to believe that the doghousing wasa just a tactic to deter Silver Raven sympathy without necessarily needing to acknowledge the Ravens as a threat. That plan sure backfired for the Lord-Mayor."

Whoops, noticed that I did not update the officer's on the sheet correctly. The loss of Vaelic and his +5 Partisan bonus, means that your Security bonus should be really teeny. Kush would only give a +1 bonus. I won't change this week's rolls. But let's discuss officer roles for the next session. Tassara could fill the Partisan role while Kush can go recruiting for example (mutant eye and all). Or Octavio could Partisan and Kush could Sentinel.

"These soul tomes are truly fascinating. Written as one thinks—a pure stream of a person's consciousness capturing the tacit and making it explicit. The recorded memories surrounding the establishment of the Sacred Order of Archivists alone, how they were able to go so far as to purchase property and construct the Monastery of Many Steps, will prove invaluable as we mobilise the Rose of Kintargo in support of the Silver Ravens. It is with this in mind, that I've decided to start capturing my own thoughts, albeit it less pure than a soul tome through the filter of language and my hand.

Thought 1: I have not set foot in the Tooth and Nail since the eventful night of my 'awakening'. Setrona has not changed; calm and collected as always, she diffused the situation caused by the Kush boy. I should have acted first; I know what it's like to be deemed other. If the boy can help, if his intentions are good, then I shall see that he is cared for in this rebellion.

Thought 2: For one that has gone through such recently traumatic experiences, Tessara seems undeterred. How does she do it? From witnessing the death of the Elmsdown brothers to chatting about the 'cute boys' in the rebellion with Luculla. Is that how she copes? Perhaps I should talk to her about it. Then again, I don't want to make it known that I overheard her and Luculla, especially since they had me on their list. Really? Me cute, with the blood of demons flowing through me?

Thought 3: Demons. My father's advancing age and frailty increasingly resist my ministrations. I fear this is the final stage in my mother's plan to destroy our family. I expect her to appear at any moment now. I know its irrational, but the dread feeling persists. So much so that I often find my mind wandering, instead of focusing on the tasks given me by the Ravens.

Thought 4: I only managed to finish half of the Ravens' orders. Two belts of mighty constitution (+2). One for Ramrut and one for Tessara. I added an extra detail to Tessara's: a feather motif (blue on one side and purple on the other (I also made sure that her belt was reversible so as to go with the variety of outfits my father made for her). I wasn't sure what to put on Ramrut's belt, but I think he's a man that just appreciates a sturdy and well-crafted leather belt. I'll get started on the two belts of incredible dexterity (+2). I should have them ready by next week, if Kush can continue to procure and cast the necessary scrolls.

Thought 5: How does Vendalfek hold so much liquor?
