There once was a boy who could not sleep...

James Alwin Shrike is not the sort of person one expects to find showing up for deployment. He dresses as a gentleman about town, walks with the assistance of a cane, treats most orders as polite suggestions, and seems to only make a desultory attempt at arming himself for anything approaching a war.

Even considering the spook show he works with, the sharply dressed scholarly fellow is an odd one but the rumors about him purport him to be worth the minor indulgences his service requires. The rumors claim he was attached to Operation Archery as part of a classified squad codenamed Bodkin. While the commandos raided the Nazi compounds and liberated civilians on Moldøen, Bodkin squad split off to take out some sort of SS bigwig.

His exact role in the ferocious fighting is classified and few of the commandos or even Norwegians are willing to disclose just what he did while on the island but have a concerning tendency to go a bit pale when he is mentioned.

He could hear them, you see, the wars of times deep...

In Depth:
James Alwin Shrike is not fond of the Laundry. He finds their methods repugnant and their ethos detestable. There is also the matter of the brand they scorched into the back of his right hand.

That brand serves to identify him to those in the know as one of the Laundry's peculiar cases. Something to be cautious about and study when given the opportunity. He is not an initiate in any of the carefully ordered and jealously guarded mysteries the Laundry makes it their business to control. Shrike is attached to an older and stranger force than that. As such, the Laundry branded him and released him under observation.

His circumstances were too strange for them to immediately exploit in the predictable fashion bureaucratic government agencies favor, letting him off entirely free was out of the question, and killing him might mean more trouble for them down the line. Fortunately, the war meant they shared a mutual enemy, Germany.

The Ahnenerbe-SS have even fewer scruples about the esoteric than the Laundry does and are bent on destroying the competition. The Luftwaffe dropped a bomb on the Café de Paris, killing quite a few people Shrike cared about. The Laundry gets an opportunity to study Shrike in action and an operative that can silently inflict lethal puncture wounds and 'catastrophic psychosomatic trauma' on Ahnenerbe-SS computational demonologists from an effective range of around one thousand feet away. Shrike gets to have a bloody revenge with the full support of his homeland's private spook squad. Everybody wins. Except for the Nazis. They mostly die violently.
