The first thing that grabs your attention at seeing this 6'0 muscular (190 lbs) Darlen soldier is not the fancy tabard with his holy symbol showing big on its front and back, nor the wooden holy symbol hanging from it.
The first thing you notice is the fiery red birthmark showing in his neck, almost reaching his jaw, that at first sight looks like a wound or skin disease. A red birthmark that if examined carefully, without the clothes that partially cover it, revels itself as very similar to the Darlen's holy symbol.
A mark that many people, including Jal, think is an omen about his life and future.
Jal stands proudly, knowing that his prowess in the Longsword, holy weapon of Darlen, can intimidate those against his god wishes. His hair is cropped short, his equipment clean and shining, showing discipline and dedication, both on the outside as in the inside.

BACKGROUND, PERSONALITY AND MOTIVATIONS
--------------------

But what doesn't show is the feeling of wanting in Jal's heart. Since a little boy it was thought his birthmark meant he was blessed, a chosen of Darlen, ready to use his god's power against evil and the enemies of the faith. But as he grow up it was more and more evident that was not the case, and that the promised divine or arcane powers expected from him didn't appear. Even under heavy training and testing, even under duress and exercises, even with prayer and privations nothing out of the ordinary manifested out of him.
He was a failure.
He dedicated himself. The persevered and endured. The kept his faith and hopes intact. He ignored the disappointment from family and teachers, the mocking and pity from the most gifted companions. he knew he was being tested in his faith.
But nothing happened.
He was only a man. An ordinary man.
A failure.
As a way to distract himself from his own shortcomings he has taken to train with the longsword to an extreme, learning to demoralize his enemies with his ability while wielding it.
He also got a like to explore caves and mountains, honing his climbing and swimming abilities, while exercising alone, away from the mocking and sorry looks from the others.
So he has become somewhat of a loner, craving a place in the church hierarchy, while at the same time having heavy on his heart his own shortcomings and lost promises.
