Background:
The Shackles are a series of islands between Sargava and the Eye of Abendigo where the most feared & powerful of pirates make their homes. The name was chosen as an ironic joke, symbolic of a place where men and women of every stripe could live in freedom. It is a place where a man’s shackles can be broken.

In Jaina Swift’s eyes, the islands of the Shackles were never a place of freedom, but the most cunning prison for pirates ever devised by man.

Born to a prostitute in the port town of Colvaas Gibbet, Jaina’s childhood was comparable to that of a bilge rat’s existence. Jaina’s mother absolutely refused to speak of her father, but the implication was always that the encounter between Jaina’s parents was a less-than-pleasant affair. Her coal-black skin, fiery glowing hair & smouldering eyes made her a target of much ridicule and hostility growing up. By the time she was ten years old she discovered that she had a talent for starting fights and finishing them, and soon after she made her first kill.

She eventually grew tired of being a burden on her mother, and stowed away on a merchant vessel when she was thirteen years old. The crew soon discovered her, but were too far away from shore to kick her off & they decided to put her to work. She started her life on the seas of the Shackles as a cabin girl, eventually becoming a fully-fledged rigging rat by the time she was eighteen.

During her wanderings throughout the Shackles, she met an aged sailor who took an interest in her brawls: at least, that’s how she’d describe it. In truth, she picked a fight with the man in a tavern and he soundly bested her. After the beatdown, the sailor was kind enough to teach her the basics of his fighting style: the way of the empty hand.

Though she never was a formal student of his, Jaina took to the old man’s lessons on brawling quite readily, learning how to effectively make use of whatever she could find as a weapon. The sailor also told her something that shook her view of the world:

“You really think that any man or woman here in the Shackles is truly free? Think again. Every captain here all says the same thing: that no force on this world can take their freedom from them. Well, if they claim to be free to do whatever they choose, answer me this: why haven’t any of them left the Shackles yet? Is it because they choose to stay? Or is it because it’s all they know?”

Though the old sailor has since passed away, Jaina pondered his words for a long time. In the 86 years she’s been alive, she has seen captains rise and fall while she went on with her life. Every one of those captains claimed to be free to do as they pleased, but not once did any of them ever leave the Shackles and seek plunder elsewhere. The revelation left her more than a little bitter.

In the end, she made the decision to bide her time. Eventually, she would find a captain who could be convinced to leave the Shackles in search of glory where no pirate went before. So far, she hasn't found one--but perhaps that's due for a change.

It'd certainly be a more enjoyable experience than serving under a harsh bosun.

Description & Personality:
Before you stands a tall, muscle-bound woman with coal-black skin and neck-length, reddish-orange hair that glows like flames. Jaina is dressed in a simple red sleeveless top with red leggings & brown sandals. Black sashes are tied around her waist and legs, holding them tightly to her body. A series of small scars are visible on her arms, from her shoulders to her wrists; they appear to be reminders of being thrown through a tavern window more than once.

Jaina is, to put it bluntly, aggressive. Several decades of living on ships have given her a rough sense of humor, and she's quite fond of making bawdy jokes alongside the rest of whatever crew she finds herself a part of. She's known for being quick to suggest having a good brawl as a way of settling disputes, but won't pick fights with anyone who looks weaker than herself unless they manage to seriously offend her. She's fond of sharing a drink or two with a defeated opponent after a good fight. She only strikes to kill when someone has the audacity to prey on the weak. She has a tendency to nickname her more prominent crew members--usually in an ironic or derogatory fashion. If they complain, she tends to think of worse ones for them.
