Jadgael the Angel was a Solar. A natural born leader and a father to his subordinate angels, he lead many excursions against the Fiendish hordes, fighting back Fiends of all sorts on over a dozen fronts. He enjoyed a great deal of success, for centuries, and was beloved by many for his compassionate nature, and respected by everyone else for his skill in battle and tactical prowess.

It only took one defeat to change all that.

He went on a raid against a band of Demons trying to break through to the Material to wreak havoc. It should have been routine, a small group of Hezrou, brutish and strong, but nothing he and his men couldn't handle. He hand-picked a dozen Planetar, and left the rest of his forces in wait with orders to retreat if he didn't return in a few hours.

Unfortunately, unknown to him, the forces of the Abyss grew tired of his continued success and plotted to destroy him, once and for all.

When he arrived there was indeed a band of Hezrou.

There was also a contingent of Omox and Glabrezu, led by a Balor.

Despite Jadgael's considerable magical might and martial prowess, and the bravery of the Planetar, they were outnumbered three to one, and his ability to call in reinforcements had somehow been nullified. After a grueling battle they were all defeated, the Demonic forces considerably dwindled, but still standing in large numbers.

All thirteen were taken back to the Abyss, and the fortress of the Balor, and the Demons did what they do best. Corrupt and destroy.

They locked the thirteen in a room together, chained to the walls in a circle, so all could see the rest, cut off from Heaven and the power it provides. Then the Demons began their torture on one of the Planetar. The others, including Jadgael, tried to turn away, but their heads were locked in place, and eyes made to never close, so were forced to look on, helpless as their brother was slowly tortured without cease for weeks on end, until eventually he expired.

He was the lucky one.

The others lasted longer, the Demons either figuring out how to better sustain the angelic bodies, or simply toying with the witnesses by increasing the amount of time they had to watch each angel struggle in vain to stay strong through the tortures.

Eventually, after nearly half a century, only three Planetar and Jadgael remained, empty husks of their former selves.

Then the real torture began.

The Demons came to each in turn.

"I'll make you a deal. We'll let you you go free. All you have to do is try something new. Why don't you help us with one of your brothers? It'll be fun! And then you can go home, forget about all of this. You'll be free."

The first Planetar sucks in a ragged breath.

"Never." he croaks, voice hoarse from decades of screaming and malnutrition.

The demons simply nod, and move to the second.

"How about you?"

This Planetar too stands firm. As does the third.

Finally they come to Jadgael.

"Last chance. It's a good offer. Why don't you take it?"

Jadgael looks at them brokenly...but shakes his head no.

The demons look disappointed and leave, giving them a rare respite from the torture.

It begins again the next morning with the most defiant Planetar.

After years, he expires, and the Demons offer their deal again, but again the angels refuse.

The 10th Planetar is finished, after a decade of torture.

They off their deal a third time.

"Last chance. Which one of you wants your freedom?"

The Planetar spits in the lead Demon's face, and looks at Jadgael, absolute trust in his eyes, absolute certainty that Jadgael will refuse, as they all have before.

Jadgael looks at him for along moment, then looks away to the Demons.

"Give me the knife."

-------------------

After the deed is done, a mercifully short matter of months, Jadgael staggers out of the Abyssal stronghold, and shifts back to Heaven.

The archangels convene, and ask him what happened.

"I and my men were captured. It took years, but I alone was able to escape. There was nothing I could do for the others."

The lesser angels there believe him, having no reason to think he tells other than the truth.

The archangel Michael stretches out his hand.

"You understand. I have to be sure."

He places his hand on Jadgael's head, and closes his eyes for a moment.

He quickly recoils.

"LIAR! BETRAYER! I have seen the truth in your soul, the atrocities you committed. Jadgael. I strip you of all that you are, and cast you from this Holy place. May whatever remains never know peace of mind, joy, or fulfillment in any form. I CAST YOU OUT!" he cries a final time, and Jadgael is plunged down.

------------

Jadgael the Betrayer is a much different creature than his former angelic self. Paranoid that others will betray him as he betrayed his men, he trusts no one unless he has no other choice. Compassion is a weakness, it gives others an opening to exploit. He may retain some of his tactical knowledge and battle skill, but for all intents and purposes Jadgael the Solar, Commander of Heaven's Regiment is no more. He has been stripped of all that he once was, and now only the Betrayer remains.
