Greetings all, need a clarification on Flexible Counterspell:

Flexible Counterspell (SU): Your mythic power enhances your ability to counter others' spells. As an immediate action, you can expend one use of mythic power to attempt to counter a spell. This ability otherwise works like readying an action to counter a spell, except instead of using the exact spell or dispel magic, you can instead expend a spell or spell slot of a level equal to or higher than the target spell.

Example - We have a round order that looks like this:

1 BadGuy Fighter
2 Badguy Caster
3 Player Fighter
4 Player Sorcerer
5 Player Cleric.

In this round order, if Player Sorcerer wants to use Flexible Counterspell on BadGuy Caster's turn to counter the caster's spell (assuming they've identified it and can in fact counter it), does that move the initiative of Player Sorcerer's to just after BadGuy Caster?

Does it prohibit Player Sorcerer from using a Standard Action on their round?

I ask b/c Flexible Counterspell states "As an immediate action...", but then goes on to say "This ability otherwise works like readying an action to counter a spell,".

If it is an immediate action, does it no longer count as a readied action, as usual with counterspell? This seems in conflict with the statement later on, in that it acts like counterspell (readying an action).

Curious what others thoughts are, and if this has come up in a game situation?

Looking for some clarification:

Does casting Cure Light wounds when a foe is adjacent to you provoke an attack of opportunity from the foe?

What if you are using it as a touch attack against said creature?

What if you are using it to heal an ally?

I've played in a myriad of games that house ruled in varying ways, I'm curious what the consensus is here. Thanks!

In the kingmaker game I'm running some of the players have expressed interest in creating heraldry for their families. Does anyone have recommendations as to software, or websites that let you create family crests, ect? I've seen a lot of garbage out there, but very little in the way of templates for shields/banners/etc. Alternately, has anyone put together anything using photoshop or illustrator for their games? I'd like something that has a decent library of images to work with and/or good clipart resources to create templates on my own.

Looking forward to hearing what might be out there.

So I've got a fun potential coming up -- one of my players in considering playing Perlivash the faerie dragon and joining the party for a time. If you needed to give the wee dragon 3 levels in a class, what would you give him?

Backstory and info -- we run a troupe style game, with people being able to swap in and out characters should they want to. This gives my players a lot of freedom to experiment and play around with things they may not normally be able to, and provides a healthy group oif NPCs for their kingdom building endeavors.

Perlivash and Tyg have been seperated in the campaign, each captured by a nasty feller. The party just rescued Perlivash from the Staglord's keep, where he was being experimented on by a very naughty wizard. Tyg is currently the captive of another foul dastard making his way east towards varnhold...

Anyway, curious as to what you would do with the wee critter given the chance -- what would you do to give your players some fun with a fey critter?

Greetings all, I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I recall reading a very nice piece of fiction here a few months back about Akiros, Kressle, The Staglord, and Davik Nettles, however I seem to have failed to bookmark it. If I recall, it was written from Akiros' perspective - him trying to urge Kressle to leave if the opportunity showed itself, as well as had a wonderful telling of the interactions between The Staglord and Davik Nettles, explaining why nettles became what he did.

Can anyone point me to this piece of writing? I'd like to share it with my group -- it was pretty fantastic if I recall.

So over the last couple of days, I've been prepping for our next session (which is tonight) and I had question flash across my head: Could one effectively adapt Apocalypse Now into a portion of the Kingmaker campaign? The only answer I'm coming up with is "Hell yes!"

Here's the situation for our game, and how/why I think it might work out. Party is 3rd and 4th level. They are moving towards the staglord's fort, heading down the Skunk river from the Frog Pond area and village I inserted called Hookmire. In my game the staglord is not a feeble drunk with a handful of thugs in a ruin that is ready to fall on his head, but instead an alcoholic bastard with a mean streak, opressing those around him through might and abuse. He's instituted slavers as his soldiers and is working on rebuilding the castle on the countless backs of the pesants turned slaves. There are a few camps similar to the thorne river camp in the region, all preying upon the local denizens to collect tribute to the Stag Lord. One such group was operating out of Hookmire.

Our heroes have done a great job of exploring the north west quadrant of the map, and handling the slavery situation therein, and have now learned of the Staglord's Castle (Dubbed The Green Heard) and its whereabouts. They are currently heading downriver on a barge, exploring some of the adjoining hexes along the way to give their cleric some time to recoup some ability damage suffered at the temple of the elk (bear in our campaign - Old primal gods are walking the stolen lands).

So they are heading downriver into completely alien territory and I realized this would be a perfect time to create an Apocalypse Now inspired side story with the Staglord taking the place of Colonel Kurtz.

Unfortunately, for me to do this tonight I'd have to wing it, which would be shoddy at best. We'llhave to see how it goes, and if the party even gets to the Green Heart (staglords castle). But that's not to say it wouldnt be an awesome idea, and completely fun to put together. (Aside, I'm thingking of modifying it somewhat to have Kressel take the place od colonel Kurtz and occurr sometime between Rivers Run Red, and Varnhold -- Kressel was not at the thorne river camp and is currently in the region with a team of bandits hunting the party... Duh-duh-DUH!)

So I'm asking all of you - given this idea seed, how would you set up a side story/series of encounters to create the feel of Apocalypse Now in Kingmaker? What pieces of the movie/original source mateiral (The Heart Of Darkness by Joseph Conrad) would you want to use?

Here's my quick list:

1) Recieving the assignment -- Party wakes up after a long night of celebrating to learn of something horrible happening deep in the forests.

2) Nung River Delta/Flight of the Valkyries -- Party needs to be inserted with a merchant/pirate in the region to head up river (captian knows the route). Fly in on Griffons amid fire from local natives/bandits, ect.

3) Head upriver, various shoreside monster encounters.

4) Supply Depot -- Party discovers an allied nations geurilla force and hunkers down for a time.

5) Do-Long bridge -- Party comes across a bridge constantly under siege but needs to get across it. Perhaps they need to break a like of Troll Shock troops or worse? Does this fit?

6) Attacks from the shoreline by bandits/natives -- party gets worn down

7) Discover the camp/compound

8) Handle the problem -- Kill/arrest/join/turn Colonel Kressel/staglord to the party's side

Anyway, I thought it would be a cool idea to toss out there and see what folks thought of. I'll be using it definately either starting tonight, or in the coming weeks, and will keep you all posted!

I’m curious, has anyone come up with a kingdome building flowchart? If not is this something that would be helpful to the community?

I’m trying to think ahead of ways to streamline the kingdom building phase for my players (when we get to it). My group has some folks that are going to be very interested and keyed into this aspect of the game, and some who are going to be pretty bored by it. I’m trying to think of ways to shunt this into an internet forum driven thing, allowing us to handle the kingdom building aspect in our off weeks (we play 2 weekends on, 2 weekends off per month).

I’m figuring that to move this aspect of the game into an online arena I’ll need a flowchart for reference of the turn sequence, and what you do at each juncture. So has anyone built one who has been doing the Kingdom building part of the AP? We are only just into book one of the AP, about 30 days into the party’s arrival in the Stolen Lands – as such our group has not tackled the kingdom building aspect of the game yet.

I’ve been parsing the boards here since January as a pre-launch (and of course ongoing) resource for the Kingmaker game I’m currently running. I cannot say enough how much the wealth of information and ideas on these boards are a godsend to the campaign. From the myriad of ideas and creativity here -- the 6 player conversion, the many options presented for kingdom building and maintenance, the raw energy and creativity everyone has contributed to the AP, these boards have and continue to be a wonderful resource for all of us.

From the second I heard about the AP I was intrigued, and once I picked up “The Stolen Lands” I was hooked. The toolbox we’re presented with is out of this world and just what I’ve always looked for in a game -- a way for the characters to make a meaningful and profound impact on the world in which they exist.

As I read The Stolen Lands for the first time, I found myself coming up with side plots, characters, and unique sites to add to the region and the AP as a whole. My mind raced with ideas - Who was there before? What had happened to allow the region to remain as wild as it is? What would happen if the Stag Lord was building his own kingdom? Could something more sinister be going on behind the veils? If there were barbarians here once, what did they leave behind? There is a definite Fey influence, how can we play with that? As I said, my mind was racing, so I did what any good DM would do -- I started putting these ideas down to flesh out and incorporate, and unleashed my inner DM.

We kicked off at the end of February, and so far our group has responded very well to the additional content. I thought that the least I could do is start sharing some of these for everyone else running Kingmaker games as well. Hopefully others here will find some of these interesting enough to add to your own games. I’ll be adding things to this post as our game progresses -- Encounters, NPCs, Ideas and the like. Please feel free to take any and all of these and run with them - make them your own for your own games as you see fit!

For any players in the Tales from the Stolen Lands game, please don’t spoil yourself by reading further!
