APPEARANCE:

Isabella has the beauty of an Elfmaid in the flush of her youth, the olive tan of a born Italian, and the thick, luxurious hair that goes with it. Oddly enough, the lustrous black is shot through with dark grey and even strands of white far ahead of schedule.
Hours spent drilling with the rapier and training with horses and dogs have left Iabella slender and limber. She is quick to smile and has a merry twinkle in her eye when interacting with others. When she believes she is unobserved, however, that twinkle tends to fade.
As a souvenir of her swordfighting, Isabella carries a small scar on her left cheek, and a rather larger one on her lower right arm. While she tends to downplay these as 'training accidents', experts may point out that the one on her arm seems to have been inches from claiming her life...

BACKGROUND:

Isabella was born to the prestigious Nigrelli family of southern Italy, a proud house of Silvanesti Elves. As the daughter of a noble house, she was provided with a broad education and the best that money could buy -- within reasonable limits; she was one of several children, after all, a useful 'spare' in case of failure on the part of the 'heir', her older brother Giovanni.

Isabella had no problem with being a spare. Her older siblings were required to go into the army or the church, whereas she had the freedom to pursue her own interests. Isabella was actually surprisingly devout, but had no desire to spend her whole life inside the walls of a convent; she wanted to experience life among other people. She earned her parents' surprised approval for developing a reasonable skill with horses -- not just riding them, but training them as well. They were less pleased in her interest in dogs and her fraternizing with the managers of the family's country estates, which resulted in her joining hunts or generally tramping around the forest, but at least she came back home with her maidenhood intact and was learning how to distinguish poisonous plants from edible ones.

Isabella's life might have been one of affluence, pleasure and calm contentment -- if not for Giovanni. Isabella had always respected him, not only because he was the heir, but because he excelled at everything their parents demanded of him. When he offered to teach her some of those skills if she would instruct him in some of the tricks she had picked up, she accepted with enthusiasm. Giovanni was the one who exposed her to the arts of swordsmanship and gunmanship, or 'thunder and lightning', as he liked to call it. Isabella proved a capable and enthusiastic student, and she adored the time she and her brother spent out in the family estate's forests, testing each other's skills to the limit. When her admired older brother told her he felt they were true kindred spirits, and that she was ready to learn even greater things, she was thrilled.

When Giovanni showed her his black and bloodstained altar, hidden in a desecrated crypt, she was horrified -- and she could not hide her reaction from the brother who had been nurturing his dark secret for so long. He drew steel on her, drew first blood and vowed that he would shed all of it for the pleasure of his masters in Hell.

Isabella managed to defeat Giovanni, running him through the heart with her rapier, but some of the scars she took are permanent marks. A thin scar on her left cheek, a long one along her right arm. And the one on her soul, as she saw her brother throw himself onto that black altar and consecrate his dying blood to his dark lord with his dying breath -- and she knew herself a fratricide.

Isabella fled the estate that same night, taking only what she could carry -- and little enough of that, as she dared not face anyone. She spent most of her money on getting to the American colonies. The push for the West suits her just fine; more than anything else, she wants -- no, needs to keep moving, to get as far away from home and the memories of home as she can. Maybe, once she stands at the far western coast of the American continent, she will be able to stop for a while and reconcile herself with what she has done. But she does not think that she will ever be able to return home...
