Illmanthonil Moorvare is renowned for his attention to detail, a fact that startles many upon first meeting him, after all–his milky eyes surely can’t see with any precision… but still, in his investigations into the lost of Sharn, he continually notices things that countless others had dismissed as irrelevant.
Despite his many successes, one case in particular has defied all his attempts to unravel it. Twenty two years ago, a half-elven girl by the name of Petha Flindswane vanished from her bedroom along with her favourite necklace. There was no immediate sign on a struggle, so the watch quickly dismissed her as a runaway, but her parents could not believe that their young daughter would leave without word and so called upon Illmanthonil for his assistance.
Within moments of entering the room, Illmanthonil noticed the flaw in the assumption that the girl had simply run away, a tiny scratch on the window latch revealed that it had been opened from outside, and the deformation on the spine of the book beside her bed implied that she had stopped reading part way through a chapter–perhaps a meaningless detail, but why didn’t she take the book with her?
This was enough evidence to convince Illmanthonil that Petha had not left of her own free will, and he has spent many unsettled nights trying desperately to find any sign of her… Recently, after more than two decades of dead ends, the elven investigator found a necklace sold in the market that matched that of the girl, upon confirming with her parents that it was indeed hers, he set about tracing the path the necklace had been down… eventually, he managed to track down a man claiming to have travelled from Xen’drik who said that he bought the necklace from an half-elven woman while he was there.
Realising that this was the closest thing to a breakthrough he had received on thins case, he hurried back to Petha’s family to explain the need for a trip to Xen’drik. Unfortunately, the family was not wealthy, and despite their desire to find Petha, they could not afford the expense. For over a month, Illmanthonil brooded over his inability to help the girl, descending into a darkness that he felt he had no chance of escaping.
One night, not long ago, Illmanthonil had a dream. In this dream, the elf was stood alone in a wide field, the wind blowing the grass into waves. A great blue dragon then emerged from the night sky, landing gracefully and staring silently towards the elf, the dragon spoke with a powerful voice–though the words are lost now to the faded memory of sleep. Just before Illmanthonil woke, the dragon looked up towards the stars, leading the elf’s gaze to an airship bearing an unfamiliar symbol.
Upon waking, Illmanthonil quickly scribbled down the symbol he had seen, and with an energy he had not felt in weeks, he set about identifying it. The task proved difficult, but not impossible. Today, he finally found it to be the symbol of the Darkstar Company.
