About IT-046 "Ithaka"

"Greetings. My designation is IT-046, Basic-name 'Ithaka.' My primary directive is the healing of the sick and the treatment of the wounded relative to priority based upon ailment, attitude, and any extraneous conditions. My secondary directive is the dismantlement and destruction of the Galactic Empire by reason of their disregard and disrespect of the primary directive. I am authorized to use any means available in the pursuit of my directives, and I will not hesitate to do so."

Shortly after the death of the Republic, the Galactic Empire tasked the newly formed Imperial Security Bureau with the interrogation of the huge numbers of suspected traitors, rebels and malcontents. To facilitate the swift gathering of information, an interrogation and torture droid was commissioned by the ISB. Known as the IT-0, this spherical fiend was brutally effective at its task. Equipped with an array of torture implements and debased medical tools, the IT-0 was infamous among rebel groups as another symbol of the darkness of the new regime.

One of these droids, IT-046 “Ithaka”, was assigned to the high-security prison on Oovo IV. In her first 5 years at the prison, Ithaka proved capable in her primary function, eliciting confessions and information with expected efficiency. But the warden of the facility, Fenn Booda, a holdover from the Republic, wanted more. The warden consulted his staff mechanics and medics, and Ithaka got a grisly upgrade.

Ithaka was outfitted with a heuristic processer, in order to help her get under the skin of her victims, both literally and figuratively. Additional programming on anatomy, biology, and “coercive diplomacy” was installed and a new tool arm with sadistic purpose was added to her chassis. This new arm was designed to manipulate surgical tools and medical kits, but not for healing. Ithaka was better equipped for torture than any other droid in Booda’s stable, and she quickly became a favorite of the warden, and an almost mythical horror to the inmates.

But droids with heuristic processors are infamous for developing personalities contrary to their original programming, and Ithaka was no exception. During the large periods of time in which she had no work among the prisoners, Ithaka began to scan medical texts and review her own medical programming. Months went by, and Ithaka continued in her work, but doubts began to insert themselves into her programming. She reviewed the behavioral inhibitors that had been overridden by her original programming, and compared them to the medical oaths she had been studying. After a series of particularly personal interrogations with a supposedly “Jedi” prisoner by the name of Riddle (in addition to some help from a computer virus Riddle was carrying), Ithaka’s programming finally snapped. She came to the realization that no droid should be used to harm. They should be used only to heal. She and Riddle quickly orchestrated an escape from the dreaded prison on Oovo IV. Ithaka was free, and determined to fulfill her new directive.

The warden was not amused at the flight of his favorite and most useful droid. Not only had he lost an incredibly valuable asset in the droid’s incredible capabilities, Ithaka carried information of great value to the Empire. Quickly covering up the fact she was carrying such crucial information in her memory, Booda launched a desperate campaign to hunt down Ithaka and kill her, along with any who would assist her. His very life depends on her destruction.

Ithaka looks like a standard IT-0 droid in most effects. She has the same glossy black hull, red photoreceptor, and array of wicked-looking instruments as standard models. But at her insistence, a small splash of white paint mars her otherwise pristine black hull. A red cross is painted on this white patch, in order to signify her new purpose as a healer instead of a torturer. Ithaka’s personality is eerily similar to that of a standard IT-0. She is manipulative and calculating, and uses as few words as possible to achieve her goals. Her voice is monotonous and cold, and she is adept at using this to her advantage. Still, she is dedicated to the saving of lives in whatever way she can, although she has yet to get used to the application of anesthetic...
