Background:
Horgam was born deaf, and the condition continued to plague him throughout his childhood. His parents, unable to help with his condition, chose to instead take him to the local church of Desna. While they too were also unable to cure him, they decided the best they could do was teach him to read and communicate. Thus, Horgam was raised under the church’s wing, visiting his family ever so often. Horgam showed a great proficiency in the curative arts, and when not practicing them, was content in his studies of different deities’ worship.
As he grew older, Horgam decided to travel to Fort Inevitable as a small pilgrimage, hoping to spread the good word of Desna before returning home. Entering the town, he soon met a friendly merchant, who offered him a golden ring, for a price of course. After gesturing his own deafness, the merchant allowed the halfling to write upon a piece of paper to communicate. Once the price was agreed, Horgam was content that he had certainly gotten a bargain. And while he had, Horgam was not quite going to get off so easily.
It was only about an hour later, when Horgam was thinking about finding a place to stay the night, that two Hellknights quickly accosted him, accusing him of having stolen a golden ring from a merchant. Horgam, not able to hear them, was seen as being noncompliant with the law, and one of the Hellknights quickly hit him over the head with his fist, knocking Horgam out.
When he awoke, he found himself in a cell, charged with the crime of stealing the ring. As the ring was found to be in his possession, and the halfling had no evidence of the purchase being made (with the paper Horgam had written on having been burned by the merchant in secret), Horgam was quickly found guilty, and sentenced to serve under the merchant as a slave for the next five years.
While Horgam was understandably furious that the merchant had tricked him, the merchant proved himself to be at least an uncruel master, that allowed Horgam some degree of freedom as long as he served him. Horgam was a fussy slave, however, and usually tried to sneak off to return home.
Horgam was considered less useful in terms of chores and work, being physically weak and not taking orders too well. The merchant instead commanded him to assist his son, a wiry mage, in researching the Emerald Spire. While the son was foolish and did not know even a thing about the ruins, Horgam was able to study several of his texts and found the Spire to be a fascinating and mysterious ruin. His dream of returning home turned instead to that of the spire, considering what mysteries he could uncover there.
Horgam was eventually freed, his master giving him a generous donation for the help he had given his son. Horgam decided to go out and investigate the Spire immediately, buying what he needed before heading out.
Appearance and Personality:
Standing just below three feat, Horgam is already short for a halfling, which certainly doesn’t help him stand out among humans. His attire is almost entirely unkempt, from the uncombed hair to the unbuttoned shirt. Unlike most halflings, Horgam prefers shoes, but usually has to go out of his way to find some able to fit his large feet.
Horgam is cheerful and friendly, understanding that while his disability makes words difficult to communicate, emotion is universal to all races. He spends most of his time helping heal the injured, but in his free time prefers to study the mysteries of deities, coupling with his dreams of communicating with the followers themselves. As he is unable to speak, he relies on his journal and pen to communicate with others, occasionally passing the book to them for their response.
