About Honus Gisborne

Description

A sober-faced human with dirt brown hair and dark eyes towers silently to one side. His torso is layered with chain mail and a narrow chasuble of white and gold. For those who may recognize the styling, this is the raiment dawned by a follower of Iomedae. He has the muscular arms of a swordsman, and rests his left hand upon the plain, leather scabbard of his longsword. Its hilt is in no way ostentatious, but the blade, when drawn, is of noticeably fine craftsmanship. Across his back is slung an unpainted, heavy, wooden shield and also a pack which holds his most prized possessions.

Nostalgia shelters and blinds him while he handles his personal effects - a collection of loose-page reports wrapped and bound in leather, and a metal box decorated with gold-leaf and engravings. Closer inspection shows little signs of age to the man's face, suggesting a shade over twenty, but no more. He displays no visible scars, markings, or ailments. When he speaks, the delivery is a steady baritone with humble address.

History:

Records dating back to the inception of Pathfinder Society itself also chronicles the semi-famed Gisborne lineage. Gladstone Gisborne was assigned by the original Decemvirate as one of the first venture-captains of the Inner Sea. While his progeny and subsequent generations did not all achieve that same position of rank within the Society, nearly every one served in the least as a field agent in their service. Tales of adventure earned the family a good reputation amongst the nobility of Absalom, and Gisborne sons were offered training and tutelage alongside their young lords in preparation for their own service to the Decemvirate.

Through the years, the Pathfinder Society saw fit to offer less and less aid to its agents. Autonomy was the only thing provided in exchange for detailed reports of their findings. They were encouraged by the prospect of fame to push their limits and risk their lives, which led the business of exploration to turn from dangerous to deadly. Numerous generations of the Gisborne name were lost during their course of duty, but each had well-detailed reports leading up to their final days.

Hogmanay Gisborne, chaplain of Iomedae, received regular letters from his father while away on Society work. When the letters stopped, an immense burden fell upon the young man's chest that time would not ease. His sorrow was felt by those around him, including his wife, Gilda, and child, Honus. Hogmanay turned to his most trusted confidant, Bristol Armitage, for guidance regarding the unusual yet constant draw he felt for the road from home. As a Paladin of Iomedae, Bristol reminded his friend of the compass-like pull that the deity uses to urge her followers to action. Having once sworn service to the Silver Crusade, the Paladin introduced his friend to the venture-captain of that lodge. He was able to collect and compile a binder of notes and reports from many Gisbornes that had come and gone in service of the Decemvirate. Hogmanay dawned his cloak and traveling gear, and tucked away a stack of parchment with ink and pen, and ventured out to retrieve the bones of his father.

Early Life:

Honus was raised mostly by his mother with the assistance of the man he called Uncle Armitage. He learned to squire, to feel comfort in armor, and to fight with steel. At night, following supper and prayers, he would read and reread the letters his father sent home, but eventually Hogmanay arrived in person to share his success. The journey was long, yet he had followed the letters, maps, and notes that his own father had left him, and retrieved his bones for final rest. A prayer for peace passed his lips as he placed the engraved metal box in the family mausoleum. His sorrow eased, yet did not fully dissipate. He knew his calling would return him to the field, this time in search of his father's father.

More of the same occurred. Honus trained, prayed, and read the letters, and eventually his father returned after a second victory. A prayer whispered, an engraved metal box set beside the first, and sorrow that subsided just a bit more. Again he sent letters to his son, and after a long lull in frequency, Honus set his eyes upon the road. Days came and went, but the nights crept slowly. Honus had committed every stroke of ink to memory before settling on the truth that, this time, his father would not return.

Honus found his uncle alone in the practice fields. As he approached, Bristol could see that he held an engraved metal box under one arm, finely crafted and leafed in gold. No words were shared when they met, but the Paladin gave a nod and withdrew his longsword. Honus lowered one knee to the ground and bowed his head as a woman's prayer encircled them. The blade kissed gently on each of his shoulders as the light of morning burned brightly across the steel folds. The woman sang of sacrifice in the pursuit of honor, commitment to unwavering faith, and a beacon to guide him home from a difficult journey. As Honus retook his feet, his uncle sheathed the still glowing steel and pressed it into his free hand.

First Adventure:
