Background:
Do you want to know a secret? Hokuto Ichihara died 20 years ago. Now normally, that would be the end of a story. But for me, it was merely a transition from one chapter to another. I am not Hokuto Ichihara, and yet that is who I have become. I was born someone else -- Seishi -- a kitsune of the Forest of Spirits, a trickster and a precocious youth with an insatiable curiosity about humans. I knew the Ichihara family, yes. Most of the kami that live in the forest do, after all, they are caretakers of the Ichihara shrine and friend to kami for generations, seers of dreams and servants of Desna. The Ichihara family is, in the current era, run by a kindly old sorceress named Kaede, the 12th dreamseer of the Ichihara family and matriarch of the family at the venerable age of 77. Quite old, for a human! When I was young, Kaede was still old, and she was mother to her proud son Akado Ichihara, a man who fell in love with a foreign woman, a Varisian wanderer come all the way from Avistan named Leah Mvashti. Together, they married and traveled together with great adventures long before my time. Their love bore them a daughter they called Hokuto. Hokuto was a bright child, inquisitive and blessed with sorcerous gift much like her father. She was in tune with the powers of the dreaming mind and set to inherit the title of matriarch of the Ichihara family when she came of age and Kaede passed on. It was at a young age that I first made contact with Hokuto, a young kit myself, we bonded and became fast friends. I was envious of her, of the Ichihara family, of the respect they had and the powers they wielded. Hokuto trusted me, and the Ichihara's accepted me as what I was. Unfortunately, the Ichihara's good graces with the kami of the Forest of Spirits ultimately put them under the scrutiny of a group known as the Five Storms. On a trip to Kasai, Akado, Leah, Hokuto and I were ambushed by the Five Storms and cornered within the temple of Desna they had come to visit. The Five Storms set the temple ablaze and drew the Ichiharas apart. In the ensuing chaos, Akado was murdered while protecting Leah, and... Hokuto made it out with grave injuries, but poor Seishi died in the fire. This was the lie I told Leah, the lie I kept for twenty years until Leah passed away, and Kaede was left with the burden of outliving her children and their loved ones. You see, we kitsune are shapeshifters by nature, and I more adept than most. I had adopted the life of Hokuto Ichihara for two decades, and in a sense the kitsune that was Seishi did die that day in the fire. I played the role of Hokuto, and perhaps Leah knew deep down inside... but she loved me none the less, she loved the fiction. Kaede knew full well who I was, it's hard to pull anything over on her, but treated me like her granddaughter anyway. I was raised to inherit the responsibility of the Ichihara family, but I was no sorcerer. No, my gifts were divinely inspired by the fire that day Leah's daughter died. A fragment of that girl's spirit clung to me, remained by my side and has never left. Perhaps it was by coincidence, fate or some sort of serendipity but Desna saw fit to smile upon me. The stars themselves chose me as their representative, and blessed me with great responsibilities. In part, I am a dreamseer of the Ichihara clan. But half of my soul belongs to the Walker of the Spheres. I have traveled far and wide in the last two decades in service to her, across Tian Xia, Casmaron and even Avistan. Visions of the future guide me, visions of where I must go and what I must do in order to earn the life I'd taken up. Now, Desna has shown me a coming beacon of light. Shown me that all this has been for a reason. I have seen things in my dreams, seen the true fear of the Five Storms incarnate, and I know the truth. The Jade Empress is coming, and I must help her.
