About Hassan Sabbah
Appearance:
Hassan is a dark-skinned Garundi man approaching middle age. He is powerfully built, but mostly hides it underneath layers of loose, concealing clothing. Normally, he wears simple commoners' clothes, but when he is on a mission he dons black robes over dirty and dinged mithril armor, and straps a pair of wickedly-serrated blades to his thighs. He eschews his former blood-red armor and the mantis mask, for he no longer follows the Mantis God, but his training can still be seen when he enters battle.
In battle, Hassan becomes a silent purveyor of death, slipping from opponent to opponent in the shadows, working in tandem with allies to mercilessly rip holes in his opponents.
Backstory:
From the city of Azir in Rahadoum, Hassan began his life as a poverty-stricken street rat living in a dumpster and making a living by pickpocketing and robbing. He didn't know who his parents were, and was taken care of in an overcrowded foster home until he ran away.
He was hungry every day, and he was destined to a life of malnutrition and crime until a chance encounter put him in contact with the Red Mantis Assassins. A cruel nobleman had... unusual sexual tastes involving one of Hassan's preteen friends. Hassan intervened, slitting the nobleman's throat from behind when his pants were around his ankles. It happened to be, however, that that nobleman had a contract out on him from the Red Mantis. The assassin who showed up to claim the contract offered Hassan two choices: Accompany him to Mediogalti Island to become an assassin, or be turned in to the authorities for murder.
Hassan took to assassin training naturally, and his background in poverty didn't gift him with the empathy and compassion required to avoid such a life. The remainder of his childhood was spent on the island of Mediogalti, training with the other assassins and undertaking what the other Red Mantis called "practice missions", usually involving the murder of a troublesome person on the island.
Hassan's career as a red mantis lasted more than a decade, and saw him travel all over the world in pursuit of ever more daring and deadly contracts. His time as an agent of evil, however, was never going to last forever. His last contract was to kill a young scion of a celestial bloodline before his power could be used to call celestial power into Cheliax to aid the Glorious Reformation. Fortunately for Hassan, the adventurer-bodyguard that the ritual-casters had hired was of the merciful sort, so when Hassan was defeated, the adventurer (a duellist named Issi) let him live. Pressed by a sense of honor, he returned later to defend her from compatriot Red Mantis, and the pair formed a partnership going forward.
Shunted away from his organization by failure and betrayal, Hassan decided that he would focus his energies towards personal redemption. To that end, he sought to use the only skill he had - killing - for a righteous purpose. He would make the world a better place, or he would die trying.
