About Hadric II

Strangely enough, Hadric Thorvaldson's story begins on the crossing over the Steam River in the northern outreaches of Varisia. He was a bandit from the Land of the Linnorm Kings, enjoying mild infamy as the 'Cloven-Axe' - but one day, he met Eleiana, and his life changed forever. She was everything that Hadric was not; graceful with her raven hair and tanned skin, her words fairer than any skald's poem. Eleiana was visiting relatives in Brinewall along with a caravan; instead of demanding that she stand and deliver, Hadric offered to protect her during her return to Korvosa. For love, Hadric resigned from his craven and wanton ways.
Love blossoms with Shelyn's blessing through courtship and chance meetings; Hadric took up a job as a mercenary with the Korvosan Guard, offering his axe-arm in the foreign city. After each foray with the Shoanti, criminals, or others that needed to be cut down, he would return, weary, to the arms of his beloved and Merlion's Odds and Ends. Three years after their chance encounter across the bridge as craftswoman and outlaw, Hadric and Eleiana were wed with the good-will of her parents.
After some time, however, business started to go downhill for the general store; after he was wounded in battle, Hadric had to rest without pay for a while. During these harsh times, he had told Eleiana, it was important to be true and faithful to one another. To this, Eleiana simply smiled. Her smiles seemed to be more fatigued, mellowed by a sense of sadness and secrecy.
It was only after the situation had progressed too far that Hadric realized something was wrong. He came back to his home one day to find Eleiana in shock, shaking uncontrollably with several vials empty by her side. The Korvosan Guards who came only after their palms had been crossed with gold condescendingly explained to him that the love of his life was an "irresponsible addict" who had gotten herself killed. Disenchanted with the Guard's ambivalence, he resigned from the Guard after five years of service. Eleiana remained catatonic after the traumatizing experience, unable to communicate or recognize the real world.
Hadric bore the public scorn for Eleiana and for him with stoic indifference, but without the Guard's stipend, he had to resort to shadier and shadier sources of income, acting as hired muscle so he could scrape together enough to care for Eleiana. Learning the word on the streets, however, led Hadric to Gaedren Lamm - supposedly the man who had introduced Eleiana to the drug "shivers" in the first place. Hadric now had a new purpose in life, tempered by his bloodlust and need for vengeance.
Another rumour he had learned on the streets was that the restorative magicks wielded by the priests of the twenty deities in Korvosa could bring his wife back to consciousness; being a worshiper of the true Ulfen totem spirits, however, Hadric was treated as an apostate and was rejected. Only the temple of Abadar offered to serve him... for a small sum of 2,000 golden sails.
