Gustag was born and raised outside of Korvosa, but came to the city with his father, who took on work in the smithy of the Korvosan Guard. His mother died long before they arrived, of a long battle with infection brought on from a festering troll bite that she had recieved in a raid on their people's wagons when they made the journey from Janderhoff. Gustag was very young when he and his father arrived, but he enjoyed helping his father out, especially knowing that there was no one else who would. On one such adventure to help his father, Gustag was taken from the market by a vile man named Gaedren Lamm.
Lamm spent months beating, torturing, and training young Gustag, much like he had done with his other abductees. He was teaching him to be one of his urchins, and tempering him to be a slave. Gustag suffered the first few weeks stoically, with the hardiness only expected from a dwarf. But, any child under such conditions would eventually break, and so did Gustag. He fell inside himself, his only light in that dark place being distant memory and unrealized dreams.
On one of his forced "missions", Gustag found a lacquered wooden mug, come to life by its artist's talent, and by Gustag's own perception. He had heard of the god who lived life to the fullest, who never put down that mug, and who never saw oppression that he wouldn't speak out against. After the mission, Gustag found a way to sneak out and attend services to his new patron. Once, he was caught, and nearly died at the hands of a vindictive Gaedren Lamm.
Soon after, Gustag was able to escape from the beast called Gaedren Lamm, and he found salvation in the local church of Cayden Cailean. He tried to find his father soon after, only to find that the elder Kegswiller had gone back into his cups...a habit of old...and had been killed in a robbery when leaving a rooftop inn of particularly ill repute along the Shingles. Gustag returned to the church with a heavy heart, but found his solace among the brothers of the Drunken God.
Since then, he has defended his ideals, and his brothers, with fervor and an iron will. He has a strong taste for ale, be it his own hearty brew or another self-respecting brewer's works, and he often is found well into his cups, as he considers it to be a form of a conduit to his patron. However, there are times when his cups take his memories back to that life so long ago, when he knew only pain and suffering at the hands of the vile beast Lamm. He knows that forgiveness and acceptance are tenets of his faith, but he also knows that his god would not allow a creature such as Lamm to enact his particular brand of cruelty upon another child. It's only a matter of time before Gustag takes it upon himself to bring his own form of justice down on Gaedren Lamm.
