Background:

Dockside bar, some local-yokels were giving Groot a hard time and getting aggressive. Rocket thought they were there for him. So being who he is, he over reacted and leveled the tavern with bombs. Not wanting to get thrown in jail (again) Rocket and Groot ran and begged a spot on the next ship leaving port. They’ve been pretty much a pair ever since.
Some ship companies like having them around in a fight since they’re pretty good at winning. Some don’t because the winning fights happen too often with them around. They try pretty hard to stay actively on a ship because they seem to be unwelcome if in anyone location long enough to get bored.
Groot sometimes has trouble understanding those that he meets. He doesnt understand why they always fear him and distrust him. Groot looks to Rocket for guidance and often times will wait for him to make the first move. Rocket is the only one who he has ever trusted since his tribe was lost to him.
Although he is intelligent he can say very little in common and even his native language is considered rusty, he has difficulty understanding the attitudes and feelings of others.
