BACKGROUND
Grigor was born in Diamond Lake into such a family. His father, Yvgeni was a miner, and his mother Karina was a seamstress. Along with his sister Natasia, the four of them eked out a meagre living in squalor, surrounded by the constant fear of being squashed in the cogs of the rich and powerful. It became too much for his mother, who, after failing to convince her husband to leave his steady if paltry employment, fled town in the night, leaving her abandoned family behind in search of what hopefully remains of her clan. At an early age, Grigor learned the value of keeping his eyes and ears open. At nine years old, his slight frame allowed him to slip unseen into the local taverns and brothels, garnering himself quite the education, relieving many drunk (then later not so drunk) patrons of their valuables, but also gaining himself loads of dirt, savoury and otherwise, on the residents of Diamond Lake. It's not that he was particularly gifted at getting folks to tell him things, he was just very good at escaping their notice, and even better at figuring out which people were the best to tell his secrets; thus, his career as Diamond Lake's youngest blackmailer was born. Shopkeepers soon learned to take a broom to him at first sight, waggoneers steered their rigs towards him in the street, and the other urchins routinely pounded him in alleyways, until the day he hit the motherload. When Balabar Smenck's third-hand man is planning on betraying him, and you find out about it, and have proof, you earn yourself a lot of protection. Suddenly, Grigor was earning a steady though tiny income--enough to supplement his father's earnings at the mine and raise his family out of poverty. Still, Grigor was hated by all residents of Diamond Lake, and so, at the age of 12, he left to search the wide world for his mother, and bring her home. Grigor made it as far as the Free City of Greyhawk. He found no trace of her there, but he slipped in with some local thieves' and tried to ply his trade of learning secrets. Fortunately, he fell in with Peller, a young halfling acrobat working in a travelling show. Somehow, he convinced the sullen Grigor, who was quite nimble and athletic from all the times he had to escape his tormentors back home, to embrace a circus life, and the two traveled the kingdoms before making their way back home. The life was happy, and Grigor's whole demeanor brightened over time. It's also when he joined the company of Mur, a placid half-orc contortionist. Mur taught him to fight without killing and how to use his enemy's strength against him (though he did include needed lessons on deadly force). Through these teachings, Grigor learned discipline and self-control, and a code of when and how to use his many skills and abilities--a code that would soon be tested. Word arrived in the Free City of the death of Grigor's father in a mining accident. He reluctantly returned to Diamond Lake to find his family home destroyed, with nothing salvageable from the wreckage beyond his father's Rhennee recorder lying in the rubble. His family's protector had gotten impatient with his betrayal of Smenck and died on Kullen's blade, leaving countless angry townspeople to seek a bit of revenge against their former blackmailer. As for his sister, Grigor found her in the Emporium, one of Diamond Lake's many brothels, working to earn her way as best she could. When Grigor earned a considerable sum of money to buy his sister's contract and free her from the life, he found to his dismay that she had no intention of leaving it. She took the money and had him thrown out into the street, and though he gave a good showing of himself, the six thugs were too much for him. His combat prowess did impress the madam of the Emporium, however, and given Grigor’s past history in Diamond Lake, she could see she had over a barrel, which so happened to be one of her favourite positions to have young men in. One of her clients, an anonymous but influential man in town, was looking for sone men who were able to handle themselves but had no other prospects, to explore the Whispering Cairn outside of town. Grigor, a sullen, morose shell, wracked with guilt at how his actions have devastated his family, fit her bill perfectly. DESCRIPTION
