About Greylith
Description:
Gray is 6' 1" slender with arctic-blue eyes, pale skin and (unusual for an elf) coarse brown hair. His hair is currently shaved on the left side of his head because of the accident.
He wears the usual nondescript gray robes for freedom of movement.
Biography:
Greylith is the scion of an elven noble house. He apprenticed at a very early age to an elven master mage with old-old-old school training as payment for an old debt. The old mage recently died in a tragic alchemical accident, with the remains of his books and towers left to his surviving apprentice.
His old master did not treat Grey gently -- he was of the opinion that working the ever-loving crap out of apprentices built character. He ran his apprentice ragged with very hard work and later intense magical training, but never crossed the line into sadism. His mentor drilled him relentlessly on basic spell work until he could prepare most of his spell loadout without needing his books. He trained Grey as a generalist mage; "Specialization is for insects!"
No, Gray did not kill his old mentor. He was there to learn and endure what he had to. The accident that killed his mentor was the result of risky alchemical experimentation gone very wrong and (unbeknownst to him) the mechanations of one of the mentor's Old EnemiesTM The existence of these Old EnemiesTM motivated Nestror, the old master, to teach his young charge basic combat magic as well as rudimentary weapons skills.
Greylith feels that sound scholarship is critical to success in magical work. He does work on intuition -- all of his craft is backed by solid scholarship and time-honored theory. In many ways he is the ultimate formula mage. He is relentlessly methodical and logical in his approach to magic and does not understand the "going with the flow" intuitive approach to arcane magic. He considers sorcerers to be very limited in scope and ability because they lack solid scholarship.
He tends to lapse into the arcane equivalent of techno-babble when he gets into a magical task. " . . . so if we do the Corunis Aelph invocation with a power-chant instead of the standard Buruna / sacravota sequence, we may avoid diphased Timulus Burn this time . . ."
Grey collects stones because he loves their beauty, not because they hold special magic for him the way they would a dwarf.
Early in his training Grey found an old amulet in his master's arcane junk box. The more he wore it, the more imbued with power it became. The amulet is very very old and beautiful but otherwise lacks arcane power.
Greylith is agnostic in religious outlook. He respects faith and does not make mock of anyone's religion. He respects divine-based casters for they know the source of their power.
