Brief History:
Gregory’s father Isaac was an instructor at the Acadamae in Korvosa when he met Gwendolyn Leroung, a fellow practitioner of the arcane arts who happened to be visiting the Acadamae for a time. Some would say it was love at first sight, and perhaps that is true, but practicality also played its part. Gwen was never going to inherit anything of significance but had connections to the rather influential House Leroung through her father’s side of the family. Isaac was an arcane practitioner of some skill and reputation at the Academy and they believed between the two of them they could build up something greater than their individual parts. They married after a year and shortly after that Gregory was offered a position teaching at the Egorian Academy of the Magical Arts. When Gwen became pregnant they were eager to usher the next part of their legacy into the world.

Unfortunately, Gregory’s birth was not an easy one. It took several talented healers to aid his mother through the process and there were moments when it looked like neither might make it. At the end of it only Gregory survived, and he appeared sickly and frail for months. Growing up, although he didn’t put it together at the time, Gregory was always blamed for his mother’s death. He would later learn that his mother’s family had never much cared for Isaac and with her passed away relations grew strained between his father and the family he had married into. If his father had been less of a talented arcanist he likely would have lost his posting at the Egorian Academy. But as things stood he had a reputation as a dedicated and passionate instructor. Even that reputation took some damage in the early years. Gregory was extremely weak his first few years of life. Although he would eventually grow more self-sufficient he would carry the shadow of that frailty with him forever. But as an infant and even further into childhood caring for the young Gregory ate up a great deal of Isaac’s time and focus.

It wasn’t until Gregory began reading that things started to warm between him and his father. Again, at the time the young Gregory had no other concept of how a parent treats a child and saw the cool distance his father maintained as normal. But being a sickly young boy with an active mind and not enough energy to run around and play he turned to books to entertain him. He would sit in his father’s library and devour anything he could get his hands on. It quickly became clear that he was a quick leaner, he had good rote memorization and picked up ideas and concepts easily enough. Isaac seized on the possibility that he might make something out of the son that had cost him so much and had begun showing him the simplest of cantrips in various arcane tomes. And thus, Gregory’s love of magic was born.

Years later he would be accepted into the Egorian Academy as a part of the Infernal Binder’s program, perhaps its best-known area of expertise. The work required in binding was astounding. Instead of simply memorizing a few gestures and incantations a great deal of research had to be done into individual devils or outsiders and preparations must be made to contain and control what was summoned. When Isaacs father, for the first time, expressed his pride in his son’s accomplishment Gregory found himself the happiest he had ever been. And for many years Gregory was very happy to study and learn at the Egorian Academy. He learned the simplest forms of summoning and binding creatures to his will and began to pick up the foundations of how one would attempt to commune with the higher powers of Hell itself when his world imploded.

His father was arrested for plotting against the rightful leadership of Cheliax and was sentenced to be executed. Gregory was allowed a leave of absence from school to visit him. But even asking for that leniency got him some stares, as if concern for his father was somehow implicit of guilt on both their parts. When he met with his father, Isaac would not talk about the charge at all. Instead he just kept saying how proud he was to see what Gregory was becoming. He warned him against arrogance but made him promise to keep growing stronger. It is the right of the strong to lead and dominate the weak. That was one of the Asmodean tenants that his father had oft repeated over the years. Although Gregory kept begging his father to explain what was happening, Isaac refused. The last thing he said before the guards came for him was, “I was not strong enough to do what needed to be done. I pray you will be my son. You’ve made us proud, so don’t stop now.”

His father was executed the next morning. And it was about a week later that Gregory, very carefully in his own free time away from the Academy, began to look into the various resistance groups said to be hiding in Egorian. The “rightful leadership of Cheliax” had taken his father and neither he nor his father had been strong enough to prevent it by themselves. So Gregory was going to need help if he wanted to become strong enough to get his revenge.
